From the Back Cover

Professional BlackBerry

Enabling users to stay connected with wireless access to calendars, corporate data, real-time e-mail, and a phone, BlackBerry devices have experienced an explosion in popularity. Many would argue that they have become a business necessity. In the first book to deal with the support and development of BlackBerry devices, authors Johnston and Evers cover everything from how the BlackBerry infrastructure works and the various components that make up its environment to installing a BlackBerry server and maintaining your BlackBerry environment.

You'll discover the different ways in which you can extend the functionality of the BlackBerry (versions 4.0, 3.6, and 2.2), how to roll out BlackBerry devices to your users, and how to create a BlackBerry intranet portal. Ultimately, though, you'll see how developing the BlackBerry platform further can result in a happier and more productive user community.

What you will learn from this book

  • How to plan disaster-recovery scenarios to provide the maximum uptime for users
  • How to take ideas learned in the book and apply them to your BlackBerry environment with the help of the sample scripts included
  • The components that that make up the BlackBerry infrastructure and how they all work together
  • How the Plazmic Media Engine allows the BlackBerry to display rich Web content while keeping the size of that content small
  • Ways to create an internal BlackBerry portal and how to enhance it with a BlackBerry channel

2.0 out of 5 stars Needs an update, Jul 11 2009
By Robert Ashe "Basher959" (Calgary, Alberta Canada) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Just got this book (July 2009). Buyers should be aware that this book covers only up to BES 4.0 (4.1 has been out ages and now 5.0 has been released). It also is dominated by Domino rather than Exchange. This is possibly because the author works with or prefers Domino over Exchange but I found this disappointing because Exchange is by far the dominant mail system and the description of the book here on Amazon does not make it clear that this is really for Domino administrators. The book does state in plenty of places that this or that feature is the same or similar for Exchange but still - I really didn't want a book focused on Domino.

There isn't in my opinion that much dedicated to BES management/admin. At least half the book is dedicated to developing apps for the handheld devices. Pages 4 to 105 are the only BES admin pages that deal with BES admin functions.

Missing is any section dedicated to troubleshooting BB devices in the field. This was something I was hoping for since most of our user support is focused around things that stop working on the user end with his or her device. When your users are all over the country, a section of tips, guidance or advice on troubleshooting would have been the core value of the book but this wasn't included. The word 'troubleshooting' does not even appear in the book index.

So this is an old book published in 2005 and my copy has not been updated or reprinted. It is mostly irrelevant in 2009 with BES 4.1 and 5.0.

5.0 out of 5 stars An must-have for BlackBerry administrators, Oct 23 2005
By Dapeng Gao - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Even though my reading of the book was primarily focusing on the excellent "introduction to BlackBerry programming" part, it does not change the fact that this book aims to present readers a "Big Picture", which I was not able to get from other similar books. The book explains in detail about each key BlackBerry component and eventually how they work together to bring user a BlackBerry experience.

As an IT professional whose work is highly depending upon BlackBerry, I read everything I can, and have strong opinions about what's actually worthwhile, correct, and genuinely helpful. I have read many BlackBerry-related books and this book has advanced to the very top of the list of books that I recommend to people, especially administrators who need to know the "Big Picture".

Another neat thing about this book is that, the author strives to explain technologies with the language that could be understood by people at different levels. Even if you are a BlackBerry beginner and if you want to get a good handle on the whole "BlackBerry" thing, this book should be good starting point for you!
