5.0 out of 5 stars The Legend of Dudleytown, May 21 2007
By Lars Ragnarsson (The Constitution State) - See all my reviews

Dudleytown was a village in Cornwall, Connecticut, which was founded in the 1740s. Over time, this small community and its people would eventually disappear with the sands of time, the houses crumbling into dust and the lands being reclaimed by the dark and re-emerging forests of the three surrounding mountain peaks.

When modern-day hikers and nature enthusiasts ran across these old cellar holes, the inevitable questions were raised: What was this place and what happened to the people that lived here?

As often occurs with questions immediately unanswered, a swarm of conjecture arose as to the fate of the people of Dudleytown. Curiosity grew and, so too, did the myths that surrounded this place, eventually blossoming into the "Legend of Dudleytown". This legend followed a supposed curse that had been placed upon the Dudley family line; a curse that had its origins in England in the 1500s. As the stories expanded, and the legend continued to be expounded upon by modern-day paranormalists, the curse inevitably mutated into a badly mismanaged myth, resulting in the most terrifying of personal experiences by would-be ghosthunters.

Gary P. Dudley brilliantly and expertly presents a fascinating and in-depth study of the story of Dudleytown, beginning with its origins. He explores every aspect of the village itself, as well as the many incarnations of the alleged "curse". Dudley also refutes the various outlandish claims by using factual evidence, birth and death certificates, genealogical records, as well as accounts from his own personal experiences while traversing the antiquated paths of this now-defunct village.

Dudley's easy narration is a perfect compliment for those readers who are quite often bored by history, creating the illusion that you are sitting with an old friend and chatting over a cup of hot cocoa. If you are interested in the paranormal exploits of infamous ghosthunters such as Ed and Lorraine Warren, then this is the book for you. I highly recommend it for those looking for the truth about Dudleytown . . . "the scariest place" in New England.
