5.0 out of 5 stars The journey toward authentic personhood, Dec 2 2006
By Paul M. Beckingham "Amazed by Grace" (Vancouver, Canada) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
In this slim volume Dr. Houston summarizes his life, his values and the transformative influences that have shaped, and continue to shape, his long and faithful pilgrimage. He writes with consumate skill, tender grace and ruthless passion. He articulates the "inverse dialectic" at work within us all as we stumble forward toward authentic personhood, while seeking to hold together the contradictions of life and the tensions at work within our personal lives.

This author is a teacher (Oxford University; the Board of Governors' Professor of Spiritual Theology, Regent College; CS Lewis Institute; guest lecturer and presenter around the world), and a man of deep Christian faith, profound intellect (with around forty books to his credit), and an intuitive respect for the mysteries of God and the life that he creates within each of us.

Dr. Houston brings to his narrrative a bold transparancy and relentless passion as he tells an unfolding story that is at once uniquely his own, and yet is profoundly the story of everyman. I found myself saying over again: "Dr. Houston, you are telling my story!"

I could not put this book down. It haunts me, calls to me and accurately describes the tensions of faith and authentic personhood that cause me to hunger after God, after holiness and towards self-knowledge in Christ. Few can say, as this author does, that frequent conversations with CS Lewis, Malcolm Muggeridge and Henri Nouwen (to name but a few), have shaped and formed his thinking, his faith and his long obedience.

This book is a major contribution from a singular and fearless prophetic voice in the field of Christian spirtiuality. It is a must-read for pilgrims who have embarked upon the journey to the Celestial City. As his former student, Dr. Houston continues through this book to mentor me through his counsel and conversation that form at once the voice of a person of profound spiritual insight and the voice of a warm and honest friend. I commend this book to your reflective reading.
