As an inveterate consumer of screenwriting manuals, I feel qualified to speak with some authority about Amnon Buchbinder's superior text, "The Way of the Screenwriter." Along with Robert McKee's "Story," and Lajos Egri's "The Art of Dramatic Writing," "The Way of the Screenwriter" occupies a privilaged spot on my screenwriting how-to bookshelf. Drawing on a variety of sources, from the familiar Aristotelian poetics and contemporary psychology to less familiar (but no less suggestive) subjects such as Daoist philosophy and alchemy, Buchbinder lays out a distinctly spiritual path for the screenwriter that is nonetheless eminently pragmatic.

Each stage of the process, from conception to final draft, receives substantial discussion, and the non-formulaic approach of the book invites novice and professional screenwriters alike to re-examine their working methods. Unlike more dogmatic screenwriting books, "The Way of the Screenwriter" suggests that story only truly flowers when the screenwriter listens to the unique demands of her material, rather than forcefully conforming it to predetermined notions of structure and theme. Further, the book adds useful iterations to the canon of screenwriting pedagogy, elaborating upon truisms about conflict and plot to the point at which they once again seem like fresh wisdom.

As a professional writer, I found Buchbinder's Yoda-like book a breath of fresh air and a useful guide to both the origination and rewriting of screenplays. In a market flooded with manuals posing as the "real thing," this one is truly it.
