1.0 out of 5 stars I have read magazine articles containing more information., April 8 2009

(TOP 100 REVIEWER)
There is so much wrong with this book, I could commence anywhere. From the work's full title one gets the impression this is a book about "The" World War Two Battleship." On taking delivery, however, I immediately realised that any book of approx. A10 size limited to 80 pages could not possibly cover the story of even a single ship of that type. Then I glanced through the content and the book immediately became even smaller! The foreword is 68 words long and the rest of the page is blank. There then follows several other obscure subject headings - each afforded a new page with great blank areas. On top of those many pages which are mostly blank, FIVE are totally blank and another 40 contain just photographs. There is, therefore, very little space remaining for text and detail. Even then, there is only a 90 word summary of the loss of 5 British battleships, the history of HMS Royal Oak is confined to one page plus two photos and the summary of Scapa Flow is a mere 81 words - and so it goes on.

There is, however, one big advantage to this lack of detail; This book could be read from cover to cover while browsing in a book-shop - thus saving the purchase price.

As far as the pictures are concerned, firstly, there was nothing new whatsoever. Secondly, they are reproduced in such poor quality as to disappoint anyone who wants to see pictures of yesterday's big ships. More infuriatingly, no photograph is credited to any source or photographer - although a number of people from various libraries are mentioned personally under acknowledgements. Some years ago, marine artist Ric Oldfield (known as "Rico") produced an incredibly accurate colour painting of the wreck of the Royal Oak. That too is reproduced in poor quality black and white in this book. I mention Rico by name because the book fails to mention him at all!

This is a book which is put together as the amateur outpourings of someone who had an uncle who was one of the 833 who died on the Royal Oak. As a young boy he promised his own mother he would visit the wreck and tell it's story in memory of that man. He has completely failed to do justice to that self-appointed task. With little or no meaningful research undertaken and by using questionable quotes "Churchill wept and said...," this is a book for children written and produced without any sense of clear direction.

If this book were an axe, it would be absolutely fine - except for the fact that it has neither head nor handle!
