5.0 out of 5 stars A fine, sparkling debut, Jan 25 2008
By Claire Elliott (Montréal, QC) - See all my reviews
This delicious little misfit of a book is a must-read for anyone harboring secret aspirations to become a photographer, thief, art historian, private school girl, or any combination of the above.

The story follows Ramona, the self-described "dull sister, the matte finish in a family of fine, sparkling things" on her quest to reclaim a long-lost photograph and, in the process, her own blurred identity. Just shy of being a grown-up novel, this slender volume comes in a very pretty package (yay to Snare Books for design chutzpah!) and is dotted with beautiful, quirky B&W illustrations that form an integral part of the narrative.

Even more striking is Thompson's prose, which is at once both spare and lush, and compulsively readable. In fact, Dreadful Paris reads much the same way one would eat Turkish delight: greedily, yes, but savoring every sweet bite.

Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Next Great Canadian Writer, Aug 7 2006
By Angie Prudhomme "Pange" (Canada) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
With her first novel, Melissa Thompson has created a gem. Her writing style allows the reader to feel all the emotions of the main character, including the awkwardness of being thirteen. At times humourous and heart wrenching, this novel of self discovery in London is truly the best and most original work I have read in years. Great things will come from this author!
