Product Description

From Publishers Weekly

Assuring readers that "finding the hidden dimensions in yourself is the only way to fulfill your deepest hunger," bestselling author Chopra shares 15 spiritual secrets for enlightenment. These secrets may sound easy—"the world is in you," "what you seek, you already are," "freedom tames the mind"—but Chopra offers sophisticated thought to challenge a reader's spiritual status quo. Blending science and spirituality, he shows how the mystery of life can be illustrated by the wisdom and workings of one's body, as "every secret in this book goes back to the existence of an invisible intelligence that operates beneath the visible surface of life." The most important secret is transcending one's egocentric viewpoint and accepting a single, unified reality: "you are not in the world; the world is in you." Each well-written chapter offers a vibrant discussion of these distilled principles, including exercises to help readers apply these secrets to their lives. For example, Chopra focuses a chapter on how death makes life possible: "Only by facing death can you develop real passion for being alive." Chopra recasts death as a way to "imagine yourself into a new form with a new location in space and time." To do this, he suggests exfoliating one's self-image by imagining oneself at various stages of life, past and future: "When you see every earthly vestige of yourself vanish," he concludes, "you realize you will never succeed in extinguishing yourself." This isn't easy enlightenment. Chopra pushes his readers to do hard spiritual work in this thoughtful and thought-provoking book.

From AudioFile

Deepak Chopra solidifies his position as a cutting-edge personal growth teacher with this highly developed course on personal change. Going beyond the constraints of mental health and traditional religion, his secrets represent an elegant evolution of his teachings on authentic living. Starting with the basic idea of being open to internal experience, he is positively eloquent as he unfolds insight after insight and responds to the objections most of us will have to his suggestions. Chopra's many listeners will miss his lyrical voice on this recording. Still, they may find that the voice of another reader reveals more acutely the colossal intellect that Chopra's celebrated voice often overshadows. 5.0 out of 5 stars Concider Parenting Well as a hidden dimension., Nov 29 2004
By A Customer
This book has been well reviewed. There is little left to offer that might be meaningful. However, I am a family therapist and a parent. I like Chopra's work, however, for parents and parenting the connections might be hard to grasp. Many people I see in my office consider seeing their children succeed as a big part of fulfilling their dreams. The The Book of Secrets cannot hurt this endeavor, however, I usually recommend a book entitled "Systemic Parenting: An Exploration of the Parenting Big Picture" (Gaskill). This might be a good adjunct to Chopra's work. It definitely will be helpful to parents wanting success in this domain of their living.

1.0 out of 5 stars A few quibbles spoil it for me, Dec 27 2004
By A Customer
While Dr. Chopra may offer guidance in popular philosophy, he spoils it for me by not being quite accurate in some of his analogies. His statement that "Our cells are fueled by the sam oxygen and glucose that fueled amoebas two billon years ago ... ." stretches my credibility. I recall reading that, two billon years ago, the earth did not yet have an oxygen atmosphere. So I must seriously question Dr. Chopra's statement. If I cannot trust the accuracy of his writing about a published scientific paradigm, I hesitate to trust it in the realm of philosophy.

3.0 out of 5 stars It's about Meditation and Spirituality, Nov 15 2006
By Kashif Javaid "Khan" (Ontario) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
The book is about Spirituality and Meditation and it's ok but didn't have exactly what i was expecting and also it didn't got much of my attention, and was unable to keep me sitting there listening(yes, i read the audio CD) or may be because i'm more of a 'going for reality and non-fiction' type of guy. So there you go, if reality, non-fiction and hard-strong facts are your thing then it won't be too much of a experience for you.
But i must also say, one should experience everything, and anything atleast once and much better it'll be, if you can find the best stuff out there, when experiencing something new, which i guess i was unable to find.
