From Publishers Weekly

Athletic superstar Ripken (Play Baseball the Ripken Way) turns the often pro-forma business/personal management guidebook into a well-written combination autobiography and inspirational self-help book. During his long career with the Baltimore Orioles, Ripken broke numerous baseball records, including New York Yankee Lou Gehrig's record for most consecutive games played, and he was recently voted into the Hall of Fame at his first opportunity. Unlike Ripken's other autobiographical books on baseball, this one begins with a contemplation of Gehrig's famed work ethic (maintained even after being diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis) and analyzing "the many parallels in our careers and how similarly he and I approached our jobs." Ripken breaks down Gehrig-style perseverance—"steadfastness, hanging in there in the face of difficulty, overcoming obstacles"—into eight elements, each with its own chapter: "The Right Values," "A Strong Will to Succeed," "Love What You Do, "Preparation," "Anticipation, "Trusting Relationships," "Life Management" and "The Courage of Your Convictions." Many of his observations border on the clichéd ("Straight shooters get more work, are appreciated more, and are almost always respected"). But overall the book's essential message—"If you enjoy the journey, you're going to be more involved. And then you'll always be in the game"—is illuminating even to those who aren't baseball fans. From AudioFile

The record holder for consecutive baseball games played reads a heartfelt memoir and lesson on consistency and perseverance. Playing for his hometown team, the Baltimore Orioles, throughout his whole career, and being a tireless advocate for youth baseball, as well, Ripken comes across as the good guy he is. He does a consistent and respectable job of narrating his story. His insights on life and work are not revolutionary, but theyre written with detail and delivered with a vocal weightiness unique to him. Wholesome stories from his family life and career are perfectly crafted and paced to make his points. A moving lesson for any listener, baseball fan or not. "Get in the game. Do the best you can. Try to make a contribution. Learn from the day. Apply it tomorrow." Cal Ripken Sr. 1935-1999

This quote from his father concludes Cal Ripken Jr's book "Get In The Game". A classic book from a class act. Cal Ripken Jr spells out in plain english what it takes to persevere and be a success not just in sports but in business and in life itself.

Ripken outlines in a straighforward manner through eight chapters his eight elements of perseverance that make a difference. Each element is broken down further into eight principles at the end of each chapter. It makes for a very quick, informative and inspirational read. The two chapeters I found most interesting were "Love What You Do" and "Preparation". I had no idea the dedication and intensity that went into the game of baseball. It becomes clear that Ripken still has a passion for the game and continues his thorough "preparation" through to his business and community service work today where he continues to achieve stellar results.

Ripken's accomplishment of 2,632 straight ball games transcends the modern game of baseball back to a time where player's values were different and perhaps by some considered old school. His book takes those sames values and gives them value in today's game of baseball as well as in today's business environment.

Get In The Game should be required reading for anyone looking at establishing a career in professional baseball or business.

Thanks Cal!

Ce commentaire est de: Get In The Game (Paperback)
"Get In The Game" partly baseball, partly business and partly psychology. Author Cal Ripken, Jr. draws on his vast baseball experience, his family background and business interests to illustrate eight elements of perseverance that make a difference: Right Values, A Strong Will To Succeed, Love What You Do, Preparation, Anticipation, Trusting Relationships, and The Courage of Your Convictions.

Throughout the book, Ripken includes similarities between his career and character and that of Lou Gehrig. As one who has admired Cal from afar, I greatly enjoyed this book. You will too.
