Review

"Peter Antill's Stalingrad 1942 discusses one of the key battles of World War II and is a top pick for any in-depth military library seeking more detailed analysis of strategies and approaches to battle. Peter Antill questions why the Germans allowed themselves to be diverted from their main objective and defeated in the Eastern Front: maps and analysis provide keys to understanding." -California Bookwatch (August 2007)

Product Description

Stalingrad has become a by-word for grim endurance and tenacity; for the refusal to give up, no matter the cost. In this book, Peter Antill takes a dispassionate look at one of the most talked about battles in history. He asks why the Germans allowed themselves to be diverted from their main objective, which was to capture the oil fields of the Caucasus, and concentrate such large resources on a secondary target. He discusses the merits of the commanders on both sides and also the relationship on the German side with Hitler as well as reviewing the ways in which the command structures influenced the battle. Apart from the overall question of German objectives, this book also unpicks the detail of unit directions, priorities and deployments, leading to a vivid account of the day-by-day war of attrition that took place in Stalingrad between September 14, 1942 and February 2, 1943. Stalingrad was more than a turning point, it was the anvil on which the back of German military ambitions in the east were broken and the echoes of its death knell were heard in Berlin and indeed the world over.

4.0 out of 5 stars Wargamer interest, May 28 2008
By Paul Bourgault "AAM Organizer, Flgs CArta Magica" (Montreal, Quebec, Canada) - See all my reviews

Like my title says, the book is mainly for Wargamers in need of fast information.
It is a standard Osprey "Campaign" Series.
Chronology
Opposing forces
Opposing Plans.
Few maps, too less to my taste. Situational maps that are well done, but the centrefold maps is awful. That isomorphic map is cut in 2, and unreadable. That is the main problem with Osprey book, and that is a real flaw.

Other books will be more complete, but the price comes with it.
At less than $20 it is still worthed.

4.0 out of 5 stars Stalingrad at the strategic level, Sep 23 2007
By richard tremblay (montréal, canada) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This is, overall, a fairly even assessment of what went on at Stalingrad at the strategic level. No personal stories here, no anecdotes. Despite a narrative consisting mainly of where units moved and when, I was surprised at how fluid the prose actually was. Kudos to Peter Antill.
Two caveats, though. 1) Why do publisher insist on two-page maps ? This is nonsense : you can't see the details unless you are ready to break the spine, and if you break the spine you damage the book. This is made worst when the action depicted occurs dead center where the page folds. I truly hate this : this is my personal pet peeves. 2) In this day and age, it is nearly inconceivable to write a book on WWII if the author doesn't get access to primary German or Russian sources. You have to be able to read one of them or have them translated for you. Sadly Mr Antill does neither of that. His bibliography is strictly English written.
