4.0 out of 5 stars Keeps your hands warm as you read it, Nov 17 2009

I was excited for the film, and when I learned that Dave Eggers was adapted the film he co-wrote with director Spike Jonze (which was first adapted from a children's book by Maurice Sendak), I figured I pretty much had to read it. Then when I saw they were releasing a fur-covered edition, I pretty much had to buy the fur covered one.

I saw the film first, and then read the book about three weeks later. The book follows pretty closely with the pace and plot of the film, but what you get more of (as you usually do in books) is backstory about Max. Not in a boring expositional way, but incrementally over time you see more about where Max's absent father is, how he feels about his sister and his mother, and what goes on in Max's household to make him feel so alienated. This is something that the movie lacked a bit for me, and so I was glad to read this in the book.

Dave Eggers has written a great story that can be read by a child or by an adult and enjoyed equally. It's a simple story with simple language and a simple plot, but is written beautifully and can often be heartbreaking. The monsters in the wild things are hilarious (the sarcastic Judith is my favourite) in their child-like imaginations and gullibility.

Those who saw the movie and thought the plot was too thin, will probably think the same of the book. There isn't really a plot, just Max tromping around the island trying to make everyone happy and not succeeding very well at it. But the story is a sweet one, and despite the fact that it felt a bit thin at times, I was never bored.
