Review

This indictment of the Fox News Network is a raw but effective piece of work. Outfoxed: Rupert Murdoch's War on Journalism is a low-budget, low-tech affair that consists primarily of talking-head footage intercut with cleverly selected clips from Fox News. It's also a bit slanted: the only people interviewed are disgruntled former employees or media professionals who are critical of the Fox News Network to begin with. That said, Outfoxed never seems unfair or unreasonable in its criticisms because it makes its points in a quiet, rational fashion and more often than not provides footage to back up each one. Along the way, Outfoxed shows how hypocritical and malicious some of Fox News' on-air personalities can be (especially Bill O'Reilly) and reveals a lot of underhanded tricks used by the network to slant the news: a good examples of this kind of tactic is the way they have newscasters slip network-approved opinions into their reports by prefacing them with the phrase "some people say." In short, some people might be dissuaded by the inherent biases of Outfoxed: Rupert Murdoch's War on Journalism, but the film offers enough solid information to make it well worth a viewing for anyone interested in how the modern news media works. ~ Donald Guarisco, All Movie Guide

Synopsis

While the Fox News cable network has promoted itself as a "fair and balanced" news outlet -- so much so that they've even trademarked the phrase -- not everyone believes that they're living up to their slogan, and this activist documentary by filmmaker Robert Greenwald takes a close look at the political perspective of Fox's coverage. Outfoxed: Rupert Murdoch's War on Journalism examines the right-wing slant of Fox News' reporting, as represented in stories the network chooses to cover and their shoehorning of editorial opinion into stories, revealed in interviews with former Fox employees and several noted journalists (including Walter Cronkite) who discuss the pro-conservative, anti-Democratic views of the channel's management and how they're manifested in their programming. The film also puts talk show host Bill O'Reilly under the microscope and offers potent examples of his frequently abrasive interviewing style. Production of Outfoxed was supported in part by the leftist political action network Moveon.org. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide

5.0 out of 5 stars How do idiots get inside business like this?, Jul 16 2004
By A Customer
The media of the vicious attacking bloodhounds at FOX have demonized the American press with a claim to fairness for nearly a decade, and finally we have a solitary predication that may drive the beginning to the end of the tower of damage they've amassed to public viewership for far too long
Yes, there are the radical right wingers who don't want real news because only lies can support their overall claim.
The point is MOST of us want the real honest TRUTH from our news and I think we can change that.

The funniest thing thing about this movie is the majority its 2 hours is archived footage from FOX. The inflamatory hate-speech they spew, interviews they censor, false claims and half truths they report are shown the exact way Murdoch broadcasts them 24/7. And this an indisputable thing FOX can neither defend nor find an excuse.

It's no wonder about FOX's tirade during the eve of the film's release on how biased its rivals are, swearing to it that if the film sells hot off the shelves they will go after their rivaling networks with all the fury they've got *true*

A Fair network wouldn't be so preoccupied it has to attack other networks. That negates its claim to be "news" entirely

A fair news channel could Actually be able to to counter this documentary's argument instead of having to resort to boasting the same claim against its rivals

It reminds me of a bully who beats up all the small kids, and when the day comes he gets roughed by another boy his size, he not ony cries and whines to the principal, he says it was for no reason!

Well at least they're not suing again, as we saw all the good that did. How unsustaining is Fox? I looked up, as actually typed, "Faux News" on google and sure enough the first link to come up is the official FNC website. That's a sign of desperation and having no merit as a news channel

I have to give my blessing to Greenwald. This is impressive work. Note you can't miss his other movie, "Whole truth about the war in Iraq," a stunning visual look at the lies and lies, and more lies used to push the public and lawmakers into this immoral war.

Outfoxed is not associated with John Kerry. It's not funded by the Democratic Party. The Right Wing elites wants you to believe this movie has ties with MSNBC, CNN, NY times, LA times, or the Washington Post. Nothing can be further from the truth. The film was produced by a non-partisan independent thinker and funded by an 'independent media', and it's only they who can claim responsobilty, or more importantly, take the fall over any speculation that comes. FOX's "journalists" have habitually been imperious critics towards those who exchange information and over certain subsidies towards polical engagement. Certainly nothing unethical about the National Republican Party being the biggest benefactor to FOX. Or media tycoon Rupert Murdoch prevailing as the solitary creator and manager to the strategist network

They present facts which are supportive to the Repub-Neocon base, meanwhile discarding news which sounds to them 'ulterior.' They are so assuming to arguments which contradict their absurd reasoning, it would be as if having to unpreach to the choire. Not to mention lie through their teeth if they think they can get away with it; "don't kill the messenger!"

The integrity of jounralism is not to carry out hearsay. It's to review, be accurate, factual, rational

Bias in a film that tells the God honest truth is a critique of society.

Bias incoporated as a news source that claims to fairly report a balanced medium of news, which in reality imparts a agglomeration of dishonesty and fraud, ultimately becomes an Orwellian form of mind control

I believe FOX News is dangerous to society

For an even closer, more in depth look into the media establishment check out the DVD, "Manufacturing Consent - Noam Chomsky and the Media" a perilous, extremely insightful and intellectuall peice of work that will change forever the way you think about news. While Fox is certainly evil and uncomparable to it's colleagues, their is a growing bias to new aged conventionilsm in the news media as it moves toward sensationalism and censorship, and away from reality. Coporate greed is hungry for profits, profits unimaginable to an average person, and the media is in their hands already. This documentary was produced in 1993 and his predictions of what was to come of media ownership by the Elite was farfetched a decade ago, but today it seems his case is understated. Nearly the entirety of our news channels, papers, and other publications are owned right now by 6 corporations. 6! It was 12 before the new millenium and now... it is 6! See this film, it will ASTONISH you.

5.0 out of 5 stars "They want all news to be opinion because opinion can't be proven false.", Oct 20 2006
By anomie - See all my reviews
(TOP 100 REVIEWER)
I'll admit that I've never been a fan of FOX news. The few times I've watched it, I've been annoyed by its glossy, glitzy sensationalist approach to the news. Well, so much for that--I prefer to get my news via the internet. But the documentary OUTFOXED from director Robert Greenwald argues that FOX news is more than just a tacky news programme. According to the filmmaker, the FOX channel--owned by right-wing media mogul Rupert Murdoch--pipes propaganda into millions of homes throughout the world.

The documentary includes many interviews from former FOX television employees--some left, some were sacked, and some were eased out. But they all have the same story--participate in the party line, or you're out. Internal FOX memos are shown detailing how presenters are prompted to play up certain events and kill other stories. Various media watchdogs also appear--including Peter Hart from Fairness and Accuracy on Reporting (FAIR)--and these interviewees analyze the techniques FOX applies to its programming. And these techniques range from dirty (smear campaigns), nasty, hate mongering, and intimidation (Bill O'Reilly) to downright tricky. One of the best portions of the film shows O'Reilly 'interviewing' Jeremy Glick, the son of a man killed on 9-11. When Glick dares to voice an opinion, O'Reilly rudely shouts down his guest, and then subsequent footage show how the guest's comments were horribly distorted over an 11-month period.

According to the film, FOX news has its share in the responsibility of the fear mongering that took place in the build-up to the war. As part of a concerted Strategy of Tension, FOX hyped fears. After watching some of the footage, I was surprised the news presenters didn't sink to wearing gas masks while on air. In one segment, a former CIA agent--a guest on FOX--tells host Hannity that he's concerned that America may have problems with wars on two fronts--Iraq and Afghanistan. Hannity makes an inane comment and compares this situation to walking and chewing gum at the same time. It's obvious that the guest's comments are being managed (cut) in a way to limit his point.

But when one considers the responsibility FOX should have to offer accurate and fair news reporting, it makes me wonder how some people responsible for this nonsense can sleep at night. In one sequence, there's a news snippet stating that it's safer for soldiers on the streets of Iraq than it is living in California. I would have laughed out loud at this rubbish if it weren't so disgusting. (Earth-to-FOX news--no one in California has been blown up by IEDs.) But what's particularly upsetting is that millions of people who watch this stuff don't seem to realize that FOX has "eliminated journalism" and has instead become a mouthpiece for right-wing propaganda. According to one interviewee, FOX audiences tend to have comparatively "incorrect assumptions" about some of the myths of the Iraq war when compared to PBS/NPR audiences.

On the down side, FOX television aficionados probably won't get much out of this documentary--whereas those of us who chose to not watch FOX will be appalled. But perhaps watching this documentary will help some of us Non-FOX channel people understand where some of the hare-brained brainwashing comes from when our neighbours and workmates begin to spout their propaganda--displacedhuman

5.0 out of 5 stars Hard-hitting and well researched...., Jul 19 2004
By H. Hunter-Henry (Idaho Falls, ID USA) - See all my reviews
I find it interesting how right-wing conservatives will attack this documentary apparently without having seen it. It is admittedly hard-hitting, but rightly so (pun intended!). Walter Kronkite and other respected journalists find FNC's tactics not only NOT "fair and balanced," but contrary to all good journalistic practice. One only has to see some of the exchanges between Bill O'Reilly and those guests with whom he disagrees to conclude that FNC's agenda is to serve as a 24/7 promotion of the Repulican agenda -- not to provide "fair and balanced" news.
