Product Description

Kalan Porter unequivocally has ‘it’ – a combination of compelling voice, charismatic looks and star quality that had much of Canada in his corner when it came to final rounds of Canadian Idol 2. Porter also added two qualities unique to the game; humility for one (his shyness proved near painful, making his transition to charisma king even more dramatic). Secondly, Porter studied as a classical musician, both in voice and as a violin and viola student at the Royal Conservatory of Music. In fact, the opening 44 second violin solo, "Praeludium and Allegro" shows Porter’s diversity and talents straight out of the gate.

On Canadian Idol 2, Porter’s voting audience seemingly consisted of teenage girls determined to vote their boy to number one. As a result, the material chosen for his debut disc, 219 Days, is considerably different from the music that Kalan admits to being inspired by (everything from Radiohead to Christian rock). Much of the first half is pure-pop radio cuts like "She’s So Dangerous" and "I Don’t Wanna Miss You", while the second half is where it loosens up a little, drifting more into the rock-inspired vein. One of Canada’s original musical idols, Randy Bachman, participates on this disc both as a guitar player and also co-author of two tracks, the Shania-styled "In Spite of it All", as well as the eighties-influenced sounds of "And We Drive".

The emphasis on contemporary pop will likely make Porter’s teen fans happy. His future, however, is rooted in his love of timeless melodies. In fact, the disc’s highlight is the cover of Cyndi Lauper’s "True Colours" with fellow Idol alumni Theresa Sokyrka, a reminder that Porter’s voice makes a great song even greater--which will serve him well as he grows into a Canadian adult, rather than just an Idol. --Denise Sheppard

5.0 out of 5 stars Gorgeous face, gorgeous voice, what more could one want?, Jun 11 2007
By Michelle A. Brooks (Las Vegas, NV USA) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I love Kalan's debut album. It's a nice change from a lot of manufactured sounding music out there nowadays. I've owned this album since it came out and I listen to it on a regular basis.

The violin work is just exquisite. That along with Kalan's voice makes this CD something special. Favorite tracks are "She's So Dangerous" and "Single." It's hard to pick favorites since all the songs are great.

Kalan's new song "Down in Heaven" from his upcoming album takes him to new heights. (Ha ha). Check it out, if you haven't already. The only thing left to do is to get Kalan released here in the USA!

4.0 out of 5 stars Intro Alone is GREAT!, April 19 2006
By Mary (Toronto) - See all my reviews
The superb violin intro alone is worth every penny! How long ago did we hear that on a CD? Or have we? And to incorporate the violin in non-classical songs is very refreshing! Kalan's exemplary musical talent is much-awaited in the industry. I look forward to more of his work!

4.0 out of 5 stars The voice alone makes it worthwhile, April 13 2006
Kalan Porter is one of the most exciting new stars to come along in Canada in a long time. He has a marvellous voice, and a terrific ability to emotionally connect with the song he is singing. This cd, although quickly done, is great to listen to and is a precursor of great things to come on his second cd, due this summer.

And just as an aside, how can "customer" declare the cd is terrible and a waste of time when they haven't heard it yet???? Kalan's Awake in a Dream (included on this album) is the best selling single by a Canadian artist of all time. Obviously a lot of people listened, and loved it, me included.
