"Is this nerd rap," my brother asked me when he first heard me playing 'Breaking Kayfabe' on our stereo. And I wasn't sure how to respond. I find 'nerd' a derogatory word but there is an argument for that. Cadence Weapon (aka Rollie Pemberton) not only laces his lyrics with video game references (Until I run in your house and take your jewels, like Zeldas Link) but also his beats sometimes sound like an intense game of Mario. Maybe he's not a nerd per say but Cadence Weapon (aka the Black Hand) definitely sounds like it sometimes.

What he definitely isn't is mainstream. His first album has received little praise outside of a select group of reviewers and the CBC (thank you for bringing this guy to my attention). And with his intelligent non gangsta lyrics and weird stripped down techno beats it's unlikely that Pemberton will jump into the spotlight anytime soon.

That doesn't mean his record isn't worth your money though. Some may find his beats annoying and his lyrics confusing but I ask you to stomach your gag reflex for a couple listens. I guarantee you'll come to eventually like 'Breaking Kayfabe'. I found it a little gritty in the ears for the first couple trys but I now listen to Cadence Weapon all the time.

I suggest that you download Oliver Square (his best song) first, listen to it, and if you like it consider buying the whole album. It's not perfect by no stretch but its worth more attention than it's getting.

Rollie Pemberton (a.k.a. Cadence Weapon a.k.a. The Black Hand a.k.a. that guy who gave Juelz's first album like a 3 on Pitchfork but loves him now) has been blowing up the blogosphere for a minute. He has conquered the music journo world via PFM, Stylus, and his own killer blog Razorblade Runner, and now he's grabbing hiphop by the horns (no homo?) for his first full-length (nh).

Beats are like Nintendo meets Kanye West meets the seedy underbelly of a city under siege. Raps are sick and range in subject matter from girls ("Lisa's Spider", "Julie Will Jump the Broom") to the sad state of contemporary counter-culture ("30 Seconds"). Apparently these songs are rather dated in terms of Cadence's life, ranging back to when he was 14 (he's now 19). It doesn't show.

Buy this album if you are any kind of hiphop fan, or frankly any kind of music fan.
