Product Description

From Amazon.com

Canadian Idol winner Kalan Porter has matured significantly on his sophomore CD, Wake Up Living. The first single (and kickoff song) "Down in Heaven" is far more than a sonic sugar high; his increasingly rich voice and songwriting style is decidedly more evocative of Tal Bachman's melodic pop than tracks from his own previous release. There is much solemnity throughout the disc, with good reason; midway through the promotion of his successful debut 219 Days, the singer's mother was diagnosed with breast cancer. Porter paused his career to join his family through the recovery process and--judging by the fact that more than half of the songs on Wake Up Living were co-written by Porter--processed much of that emotional battle via his music. The result is a CD that is frequently somber and lyrically contemplative: "Try"--a Beatle-esque melody with musings about life, death and love is perhaps the most mature track on the disc, while "One Last Try" and "Run Run Run" have a distinctly Sarah McLachlan feel. On a number of songs (including "Wrong" and "Karma King"), the singer/violinist is writing from a place of passion, but his lack of memorable melodies and vocal rawness leaves potentially powerful tracks somehow flattened. This more mature Porter might temporarily alienate him from his teen fan base, but his undeniable talent should carry him through to future, more even-keeled releases. --Denise Sheppard

5.0 out of 5 stars Kalan porter wake up living, Nov 24 2007
By Ms.Razorblades "~*~Razors~*~" (Vancouver BC, Canada) - See all my reviews
I really liked this cd, the music is very deep and personal. When I play it on my mp3 player in the morning it can make you feel as if your the only person in the room, Ive been a fan of kalan since his start on canadian idol, and with this I take my hat off to him. My favourite song is "Hurray" along with "Try" and "Karma King"

4.0 out of 5 stars 3.5 stars for sophomore, Nov 2 2007
I admit I had huge expectations and maybe unrealistic expectations as to what I expected Kalan's sophomore CD to be. On first listen I was crestfallen as the mood of the CD was not what I hoped his direction would be. Once I let go of my personal expectations I was able to enjoy the CD on a whole and still do.

The CD has several tracks that reflect the emotional turmoil Kalan was going through due to a personal issue when making the CD, but there are a few more uptempo tracks such as the catchy "Hurray" and Karma King. This album my not be a masterpiece, but there are still some good material on it such as Beauty, Walk on Home and Try and worth a listen. My main criticism is that I wish the production was a bit better. Kalan's live vocals are stellar and this CD seems to hide them or has stripped them in some of the songs.

5.0 out of 5 stars Porter Delivers, Nov 1 2007
By D. Kubista (Canada) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I bought this CD with great expectations and was not disappointed. Several of the songs deserve serious radio play and overall they are well written and melodic. Porter's voice has an unbelievable richness to it and it's not overshadowed by the music. Personal faves are Out of My Head (touching), Hurray (Upbeat Tempo) and Run Run Run (Falsetto).
This music is hard to pigeon hole into any one category as it's unique as is Porter. The Violin has a life of its own and in Porters capable hands the finally product is nothing short of magical. I would highly recommend purchasing this CD as Kalan Porter has given us a CD that is enjoyable to listen to and share with friends.
