Review
Pixar's Parisian-set Ratatouille tells the delightful story of Remy (Patton Oswalt), a sewer rat with sophisticated taste buds who wants desperately to become a gourmet chef. Artistically employing state-of-the-art CG animation, director Brad Bird uses colorful imagery to create a visual metaphor for what this rat with a highly refined palette experiences whenever he eats good food. The bright, playful splashes of color that symbolize Remy's exploding taste buds have the same effect for the audience as they do for the rat, pleasurably tickling the senses of audience members of any age. If Ratatouille accomplished nothing else, it would still be a very good movie, but the film goes even farther. Remy is such a likeable, sympathetic character that his story translates to anyone's calling or interest, from cooking to filmmaking to sculpture. Without doubt, Ratatouille is a heartwarming story, but its subtext expresses why art matters so deeply to those who make it, as well as to those who appreciate it. Bird knows how to orchestrate a frantic chase through a kitchen with the precision of the old Warner Bros. Looney Tunes team, and the timing of Buster Keaton. Like Remy, Bird knows how to utilize a variety of elements that play off each other to create something new and memorable that's greater than the sum of its parts. As with all Pixar films, the animation is exquisite. Watching wine pour from a bottle into a glass is almost sensory overload, as attention is paid to every instant of the liquid's movement, and the way different lighting affects its burgundy hue. Bird also paces his story with masterful skill, inspiring the audience to care for his characters and understand their desires. There's always a reminder of what's at stake for Remy and the other characters before Bird plunges us into another brilliantly enthralling set piece. Bird even portrays the fearsome restaurant critic Ego (gloriously voiced by Peter O'Toole) with just as much respect as he does the film's hero. Perhaps this helps explain why the film opened to such rapturous reviews from critics, but there is so much more to Ratatouille than simple flattery. The film reflects the fact that Bird understands the way cuisine, film, or any art form can trigger the senses -- which in turn trigger our emotions, inspiring our own warm memories. Very nicely animated, good characters, a very good story and the right pulls on our emotional strings this movie comes out a winner. And even better, its good for everyone. Remy, the lead character is a rat who struggles with the choice between being his true self in a world of humans, and being with all his family and loved ones. With humans, Remy can cook and produce food, but has few real relationships. He and the human Linguini share a common love of food, but their cross-species friendship is often strained by misunderstanding. With his fellow rats, Remy has a community and the respect of his peers, but is forbidden from his passion. Eventually, Remy is able to reconcile his two worlds with a charming message of friendhip, loyalty, and love. The writers deserve props for Collette - a female character that is tough as nails while maintaining her humanity. She is likeable and relatable, without being at all weak. Instead, she is sympathetic because her compassion comes from a place of strength. Another great aspect to this movie is the atmosphere. The Parisian scenery brings to life a city of passion and love. The animators did a great job. This is a new style of CG. The artwork has such heart to it, that I almost forgot it wasn't water colour animated. Despite all these good things, the film still falls short. It is difficult to suspend disbelief about talking animals when they interact with talking humans. The mix of rat and human storylines also limits the character development opportunities. In the human world, we enjoy following Linguini's career and romantic aspirations and, in the rat world, we grow to care about Remy's journy, but there isn't enough screen time to get any depth in either storyline. The other big flaw, which will only annoy pedantic animal lovers like myself, is in the very premise of the movie. Rats actually have an excellent sense of smell. And while, in urban settings, they get dirty out of necessity, they are very picky about what they eat. This is the big flaw which keeps the movie from being a keeper. As much as I kept telling myself it was fantasy, I kept getting distracted by the lack of realism. Was this review helpful to you? Tupone (Saskatchewan) - See all my reviews (TOP 500 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)    A person (or writing team) must be pretty creative to come up with the concept of a French rat who desires something more out of life; the desire to create works of art through the culinary arts. The absurd idea that a rat has a personality and yearns to be something more than just a scavenger of garbage is in and of itself a humorous one. This crazy idea sets the tone of Ratatouille and the fun keeps building from there. Mix that worldly rat's existential desires to take his gifts and become a creator of something with a bumbling young man who needs a job and you have the perfect recipe for a fun and entertaining film. The film is definitely absurd but that's what makes it fun. As an individual who loves to eat and loves to create dishes I was actually able to relate to the main character even though he is a rat! As with any Pixar film, there are several great characters who do nothing short of improve the film and make it that much more enjoyable. Pixar has been highly successful, once again, in creating a film that an entire family can enjoy together and that in itself makes it worth buying and watching. Was this review helpful to you?
