My Book Essential Edition 2.0 is easy to set up and easy to use. Installation is a snap because you don't really install this drive, you just plug it in and it's ready to use. This external hard drive also turns itself on and off with your computer. It's ideal for anyone who needs instant storage for their important files or a digital photo collection.
A USB 2.0 connection is available for convenience and compatibility among multiple computers. The drive is also PC and Mac compatible: You can use the My Book Essential Edition with both PCs running Windows 2000, Windows XP, or Windows Vista and Macs running OSX 10.4.8 or higher.

The My Book Essential Edition is backed by a 1-year limited warranty.

This is my 3rd WD external drive - the first was a portable Passport drive, second was a desktop 500GB MyBook Essential, now this is my third. I paid the same for the 1TB as I did for the 500GB...amazing.

I use this as my Time Machine drive to back up my 250GB iMac and 500GB external drive....works like a charm. I've created 2 partitions on it however, so that 1 partition that's for Time Machine can hold the space both iMac and 500GB drives (approx 750GB) and the 2nd partition is for misc.

It comes pre-formatted with FAT-32, so you can either keep it that way for the Mac or use Disk Utility to format it for OSX and create the partitions (that's what I've done). It comes with utilities for backup...don't need it.

I was contemplating the firewire2 version...but it's about $100 more than the USB2 version...although perhaps one day I will splurge...essentially it's a backup drive so the slower speed wasn't a deal breaker for me. As for my other 500GB drive that I use for media, it's my iTunes library and for music it's fine. I wouldn't use a USB2 drive for video editing, firewire2 is a better solution for that.

I've also heard of these drives malfunctioning...a colleague at work had that problem with one of the older firewire1 drives. Don't quote me, but I've read the source may be from the backup utilities (which I don't use). All three of mine work like a charm...that's why I've always gone with these MyBook drives. The only issue I have with them is the size of the power adapter. Nowadays, where people have many peripherals like a printer, scanner, external drives etc. making space on your power bar(s) becomes a challenge.

Pros:
- extremely quite
- sleeps and wakes with my computer
- works as expected
- attractive (unlike some of the aluminum cased drives on the market)
- great value

Cons:
- USB2 is slow for video editing
- power adapter is big

This is my second Western Digital My Book Essential Edition external hard drive; my first was a 500GB that I paid nearly as much for a year ago. It is totally seamless in use- no need to manually turn it on or off- very convenient. If it's as quiet and reliable as my first one I'll be very happy, The only reason I give it 4 instead of 5 stars is the need to search the website for Mac formatting instructions- but once there it's easy (You have to Partition, not Erase using Disk Utility). Special thanks to Amazon.ca for a great product, great price and great service (ordered Saturday evening-shipped Monday- received Tuesday morning!)

Great, solid, reliable with my Vista system. Pretty quiet - no fans, but hums a little when it is really thinking. Before you store anything on it, just format it to NTFS as it comes with FAT32, and the latter can't handle big file sizes. Seamless operation after that.
