Okay, I've seen some other discussion of this disc, and while I'm not convinced, I'll withhold some of my nastier views (posted in my original review).

For starters, there's the question of aspect ratio. Experts seem satisfied that this Blu-ray does indeed retain the full image from the film on which it was shot. However, I do KNOW that when I first saw the film in Cinerama, it WAS wider than it is on this disc. Maybe the Cinerama showings were cropped top and bottom? If so, did Kubrick shoot it with that format in mind, or would he have preferred the full frame to be seen?

Regardless, I still maintain that this disc does not have the sparkle and sharpness I'd expect. My suspicion is that it's been put together using the same digital materials as the previous special edition DVDs, rather than remastered from film originals expressly for high-def.

All in all, neither the most dazzling nor the most disappointing Blu-ray I've seen. Compared to the thrill of seeing the film in its original glory, this Blu-ray edition failed to impress me. Try to see 2001 in an IMAX revival showing.

My original theater viewing decades ago did nothing to engage me the way this blu-ray has. It's simply stunning, and given the technical limitations of the day, I don't think anyone has had the opportunity to see the quality visuals as the director intended. I'm embarrassed to say, I didn't understand the hoopla at the time, but now on blu-ray, I find 2001 completely mesmerizing (like a lava-lamp).

While not a recent movie with all that current technologies (including sound and video effects), this Blu-Ray version places 2001 squarely in the panthion of classic films. Interviews with key members of the team and insight into Kubrick's process provide a lot of information. Definitely for 2001 fans and great introduction for would-be fans. This is a great film and this technology translates it very well.
