I love my PS3, April 12 2009
Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
The games library has been steadily growing and the cries of "there's not enough games to justify the expense" have either been silenced, or they belong to fanboys of the other consoles out there.
The $399 price tag is a bit steep, but completely justified; you do get what you paid for. This thing is solidly built, comes with nice features, and is an excellent Blu-ray player to boot. The similarly equipped Xbox 360 Elite Console 120GB with 2 Bonus Games (minus the Blu-ray) costs about the same, but you would incur additional costs for internet gaming (free on the PS3).
The only thing that the PS3 has working against it is Sony executives mouthing off and offending pretty much everyone. But that has nothing to do with the quality of the machine.
Actually there is a second small knock against it. You should be aware that at least the current 80GB model is not backwards compatible with the PS2; there are lists compiled (easy to find on the net) of PS2 games and their level of compatibility with the PS3--the info is a bit confusing though, as it refers only to compatibility with the higher priced PS3's; the entry level console (now 80GB, used to be 40GB) will not play any PS2 games (unless there's a software update in the future).
Ultimately, if you're into games, make a list of the games you want to play, and if your list requires more than the fingers on your left hand (I'm assuming you're using your right hand index finger to count) then spoil yourself (or your loved one/s) and jump in.
And if you're into Hi-def, well, then you can't go wrong with the PS3 as a Blu-ray player--it's load-time is reputedly one of the better ones (for some reason Blu-rays load slower than DVDs), and its update feature (easy, over the wi-fi internet connection) ensures that you always have one of the better players; so again spoil yourself or your loved one/s. And enjoy!
Hopefully, whatever issues need to be addressed with the CRTC will soon be dealt with, and we'll get access to Sony's movie rentals service--something our US neighbors have been enjoying already...
The following lists are by no means complete (amazon limits links to 10 per review) and I tried to include different genres. I pointed out the games that are exclusively on the PS3.
5 Games worth buying:
Grand Theft Auto IV
Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion (but it's worth shopping around for the "game of the year" edition that has twice the content.)
Uncharted: Drake's Fortune-PS3 Exclusive
Resistance: Fall Of Man-PS3 Exclusive
Valkyria Chronicles-PS3 Exclusive
5 Games worth a rental:
Heavenly Sword-PS3 Exclusive
Little Big Planet-PS3 Exclusive
Resident Evil 5
Folklore-PS3 Exclusive
Bioshock
A lot of these games have been around for a while, so they are relatively cheap. There's at least thrice as many other games worth playing...
UPDATE: I upgraded my hard drive to 500GB (well, 465GB after formatting). This is another plus for the PS3 - it uses a standard 2.5" 5400RPM drive (like those in most laptops) rather than Xbox's proprietary (and ultra expensive) drive; if you shop around you can get a new brand name 500GB drive for about $110 (with taxes and delivery).
You can find how-to videos on YouTube. The mechanical aspect of the switch was really easy; if you can hold a screwdriver, you can do this - make sure you have the right screwdriver though, to avoid stripping the screws; the files transfer took a while, and a few minutes of research on the playstation forums. And the upgrade does NOT void the Sony warranty.
UPDATE: sure, you can now get the slim PS3, cheaper, likely more reliable (though I've had no problems with my fat one), smudge-proof, ...slimmer... but can you turn it on with the warmth of your finger? nope, regular buttons on the slim; can you install Linux? nope, support's gone on the slim; can you twist the little playstation logo to reflect your choice of set up (horizontal or vertical)? nope, slim's logo is stamped on. I'm just saying... you won't love the slim PS3 as you would the fat PS3...

I purchased the ps3 and I love it. I know many ppl complain about the lack of games compared to the xbox 360 but the ps3 is amazing. The games are great, graphics are top notch and I would recommend this system over any other. The best part is I have a blue ray player with a video game console in 1 ... go buy a blue ray player it will cost you $200-300 that is on the low side ... purchase the ps3.

Take a close look at the PS3., Jun 20 2009
Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
The PS3 is a great console. They're reliable machines with excellent multimedia capabilities, free online service, and great games! The game library is starting to grow, you might here that the graphics are similar to the 360 but, developers have yet to use the full potential of the system. Of course the graphics will be the same if the game is from a third party, those titles are basically the same regardless of the platform they are released on. Plus there are about 41 PSone titles (as of june '09) available for download such as Final Fantasy VII, Resident Evil, etc. And even though the controller looks the same as the PS2 and PSone, it too has many new features (wireless, motion control), this makes PSone backwards compatability that much better. 360 is a great system. But so is the PS3, it has a lot of new features, and the familiarity of the PlayStation family.
