Upgrade to Windows 7

All editions of Windows XP and Windows Vista qualify you to upgrade.

1. Choose your edition of Windows 7
Explore key features and choose the edition that's best for you. Be sure to check the expanded list of extended features in Windows 7 Home Premium, Windows 7 Professional, and Windows 7 Ultimate. System requirements vary for each edition of Windows 7 because some features might require special hardware.

2. See if your PC has what it takes to run Windows 7
In general, if your PC can run Windows Vista it can run Windows 7. To make sure, download and run the Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor to do a quick check. If you want certain features, such as HomeGroup or Windows Media Center, check to see if your PC has the hardware that's needed.

3. Check which operating system your PC is currently running
How you make the move to Windows 7 depends on your current operating system.

  • Windows Vista
The transition to Windows 7 should be pretty smooth, although you may need to update your system to the latest service pack first.

  • Windows XP (or any other operating system)
We recommend that you experience Windows 7 on a new PC. While we don't recommend it, you can opt to upgrade your current PC from Windows XP or another operating system to Windows 7. We recommend that you get help with this process from your local computer service provider. You'll need to back up your current files and settings, perform a custom (clean) installation, and then reinstall your files, settings, and programs.

5.0 out of 5 stars Cool new feature in this version. Boot from VHD., Sep 3 2009
By Innova101 (Canada) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Microsoft Windows 7 Ultimate Upgrade (DVD-ROM)
I am currently using Ultimate as my main operating system. One cool feature, not available in Professional or Home Premium, is the ability to boot from Virtual Hard Disks (VHD). You might want to double check if your CPU and motherboard support hardware virtualization, as that might be required too (Google that!).

What this means in real life, is that unlike using Windows 7 Virtual PC or XP Mode, where you cannot take advantage of your computer's hardware ( say the video card drivers or the sound card, as you have to use the built-in virtual ones ), booting directly from the VHD allows you to do that. This way, my "main system" is a usual-install, while I have a virtual system to play around with software that I do not want to install on my main OS. The VHD is just a one-big-file, so I can backup the "pristine copy" on an external drive, and restore it quite quickly as required. For most people, this might not matter too much, but for folks who like to tinker with their computers... !!!!

4.0 out of 5 stars User and Educator, Nov 24 2009
By Errol L. Ferguson - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Microsoft Windows 7 Ultimate Upgrade (DVD-ROM)
I have used Windows7 Ultimate 64 bit for personal use and business and find its many features to be exceptional and easy to use. I did an upgrade install and much to my surprise it went without a glitch.
I have been a Windows user however for 30+ years and was somewhat disappointed in Vista but find this Windows much improved. I am still having some difficulties with Windows 7 and previously installed software where Windows will freeze but I am patiently trying to find out what software and/or drivers are causing the problem and update them.
All in all I love Windows 7, it is well layed out and organized, pretty to view and its many features make my work both easier and fun to do.
Thank you,

Errol Ferguson

5.0 out of 5 stars Windows 7 Ultimate, Nov 18 2009
By Calin Enea Popa (Montreal, QC, Canada) - See all my reviews

This review is from: Microsoft Windows 7 Ultimate Upgrade (DVD-ROM)
The Windows 7 Ultimate works excellent. I had before Vista and it was a pain. Now I am enjoying working. The laptop starts quick and the battery works almost 2 times longer. even if I backedd uo all data, I didn't have any data loss or problems when doing the upgrade. if you are upgrading, think that you will need some time, as the installation takes 3-4 hours.
