J.J. Abrams' 2009 feature film was billed as "not your father's Star Trek," but your father will probably love it anyway. And what's not to love? It has enough action, emotional impact, humor, and sheer fun for any moviegoer, and Trekkers will enjoy plenty of insider references and a cast that seems ideally suited to portray the characters we know they'll become later. Both a prequel and a reboot, Star Trek introduces us to James T. Kirk (Chris Pine of The Princess Diaries 2), a sharp but aimless young man who's prodded by a Starfleet captain, Christopher Pike (Bruce Greenwood), to enlist and make a difference. At the Academy, Kirk runs afoul of a Vulcan commander named Spock (Zachary Quinto of Heroes), but their conflict has to take a back seat when Starfleet, including its new ship, the Enterprise, has to answer an emergency call from Vulcan. What follows is a stirring tale of genocide and revenge launched by a Romulan (Eric Bana) with a particular interest in Spock, and we get to see the familiar crew come together, including McCoy (Karl Urban), Uhura (Zoe Saldana), Sulu (John Cho), Chekhov (Anton Yelchin), and Scottie (Simon Pegg).

The action and visuals make for a spectacular Big-Screen Movie, though the plot by Abrams and his writers, Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman (who worked together on Transformers and with Abrams on Alias and Mission Impossible III), and his producers (fellow Losties Damon Lindeloff and Bryan Burk) can be a bit of a mind-bender (no surprise there for Lost fans). Hardcore fans with a bone to pick may find faults, but resistance is futile when you can watch Kirk take on the Kobayashi Maru scenario or hear McCoy bark, "Damnit, man, I'm a doctor, not a physicist!" An appearance by Leonard Nimoy and hearing the late Majel Barrett Roddenberry as the voice of the computer simply sweeten the pot. Now comes the hard part: waiting for some sequels to this terrific prequel. --David Horiuchi

5.0étoiles sur 5 By Far The Best Movie Of The Summer Of 2009, Sep 8 2009

(TOP 500 REVIEWER)
I do not write reviews until i see the product i am talking about but in this case i am reveiwing the movie not the Blu Ray. I like Star Trek but i do not LOVE Star Trek. I feel there is just about as many crappy Star Trek episodes and movies as there good ones. In the case of the newest Star Trek movie i went to see it with an open mind and i was blown away! First of all Stop reading here if you have not seen the movie. I do not want to wreak it for you. All i could think about going into the movie was that this new movie has to suck because we all know what happen's to the crew of the Enterpise and we know what happen's befor and after thanks to other show's in the Star Trek Universe. So how can we posibly be surprised by the outcome of the film. Easy! change a point in history so all future events unfold dif.. And how they changed it!! I will not give away any more of the films secrets but i was shocked by the event's of this film. If you watch the show's or past movies this film will shock you as well. When i say that i don't mean offended shocked but WOW shocked. That being said the casting in this film was amazing (The guy that plays "Bones" is amazing. They also tell you how he got the nic name). The visual effects are as good as they get and the film open's up in an action sceen and never really let's up.
I can not say enough about this film and like i said I am not a huge fan of the series past films and TV show's. Basiclly what i am trying to say is I am not a Star Trek fan that thinks everything they do is gold. If you like action film's or Sci Fi I do not see how you could not love this film. I guess this will be the first Star Trek movies i will own.

5.0étoiles sur 5 A love hate relationship., Oct. 22 2009
Par Simon Bergeron - Voir tous mes commentaires
(REAL NAME)
It seems like many fans in this review column are very separated: they either love the movie or hate it.

To my special knowledge, I would say I just enjoyed myself like a Star Trek movie didn't do to me since Undiscovered Country (that's Star Trek 6). The Next Generation movies were a failed attempt (to my taste), at best, to try and breathe life in an almost lifeless franchise and Nemesis (that's Star Trek 10) killed it with underwhelming adventures and over-predictable plot twists.

This Star Trek tried to remake the excitement of the franchise while adding that spicy adventurous flavour, adding more action than dialogue-only-oriented scenes (don't get me wrong, I love dialogue), but there was an overabundance of it in the more recent films that threatened its frail balance.

Not only did it try and do that, it also did the impossible (still to my taste): to be a remake AND a sequel. the special effects are nothing like we've ever seen (I can't wait for the Blu-Ray) in a Star Trek movie; the action is relentless AND doesn't interfere with the story; major plot-points are rewritten in my face as I watch, helpless, yet amazed at how the script boldly goes where no Star Trek has gone before (cue the undying music).

Although I can't see how they can better themselves with the next movie, I also have to remind myself that there was also a dead franchise that was revived with the efforts of a great director: Batman.

2.0étoiles sur 5 Price gouging by Paramount Home Entertainment, Nov. 3 2009

This review is from: Star Trek (2009) (DVD)
No matter how good this movie is. It couldn't explain why Amazon US is selling this same item manufactured by the same sole source supplier for $15.99 USD. It doesn't take a genius to notice the price discrepancy even accounting for the exchange rate. Guess Paramount doesn't really want Canadians to buy this DVD. Don't blame Amazon Canada for the inflated retail price set by Paramount Home Entertainment.
