5.0 out of 5 stars A Grandiose Rock Record, Aug 31 2009
By Wade Tomlin (Toronto, Ontario) - See all my reviews
(TOP 1000 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
This review is from: Burn Burn (Audio CD)
There's one thing I've learned about all great records, the first listening experience isn't when you judge a collection. After all, anything a little new or different shouldn't necessarily leap off the speakers with immediate appeal as often the best songs require you to grow into them over time.

That's why Burn, Burn by Our Lady Peace seems likely to become one of my favourite records as at first I wasn't even sure if I would buy it. Lead single All You Did ... ... was just a little too spot on of a pop rock song that at first seemed like the band was trying a little too hard for pop success. Yet, I still found myself getting pulled into the song more and more as the days passed.

Now that I've buckled and bought the record, whether it's the grandiose guitars showcased on Dreamland or the calm laments of aging on Paper Moon, Burn, Burn has shown itself to be an unabashed pop rock record that revels in hooks, guitars and comfort. But by removing Bob Rock and company from the equation, the band has seemingly taken the best lessons from their years in the business and has produced a superbly crafted selection of pop rock. A song like Monkey Brains for example is one of OLPs boldest choices, but even its angry guitars are broken up by the most accessible of bridges.

Anyone expecting a Naveed like return to raging alternative rock should take a pass, songs like Escape Artist aren't meant to kick-start mosh-pits. Instead Burn, Burn is a great showcase for the improved songwriting that Our Lady Peace has developed over the past decade plus of touring and recording.

Burn, Burn walks that tight-rope of sounding fresh yet accessible that has defined their Our Lady Peace's best work. It may not immediately appeal, but don't kid yourself; Burn Burn is one of the band's best collections of song.
