School of Rock will forever embody what Jack Black may have been, if not for a little band known as Tenacious D.
In a world... Where Dewey needs a job...and no one will hire him because he's a rock-loving, stoner...until he impersonates his sub in a preppy, private school's music class...comes: "School of Rock!"
Jack Black was made for this movie and visa-versa. He is given the space he needs to go rampant with his wild antics of rockacious fortitude; Like Robin Williams as an auction caller. He is able to show his dramatic capabilities as well, along with many hilarious quip's of sarcasm. I haven't laughed that hard and continuous in any movie that I can remember. Comedic Value? Cha-ching. I will own it the day it comes out. Long Live TD. ~s.a.o.s.~

I am balancing the scale here, forgive me.
Ghost Ship was actually better than I expected, with an opening that beats-out the rest of the film. Another example of this formula can be found in another slightly better film, "Event Horizon", which is on a 'space-ship' rather than a regular one.
An ocean-liner disappears many years ago, only to be discovered again inhabited by ghostly beings. There are some parts better than others, with some good old/new fashion jumps. That's what really counts nowaday's, I suppose. But, there were many times when I was left scratching my head, "Where's Gabriel Byrne?" The old "Forget about the character's until the plot (did I just use the 'p' word as a descriptive?) needs them to turn up." On the other hand, there are quite a few surprises as far as the "why's and where's", but once you know this would you want to watch it again? Describing the acting as GOOD, would be devulged as the same GOOD as Samuel L. Jackson, Dustin Hoffman, and Sharon Stone in (the letdown in my life-creation of my favorite book) Sphere. If you Loved Ghost Ship, I can understand why.
But for me: A good one to watch once. Rent her. Fin'

5.0 étoiles sur 5 Second Hand is First Rate, Nov. 14 2003
Its great to know movies like this are still being made. Second Hand Lions has come and gone in the box office, finishing in the "warm hit" category receiving nearly $42 million at the box office. Unfortunately, even though those numbers are decent, nowadays its kind of "eh". I have to say, this movie should have made triple its earnings.
Robert Duvall and Micheal Caine (This is no shocker) give fantastic performances as grouchy, mysterious, old uncles. Many questions arise: They may or may not have robbed the most powerful Sahib in Arabia...Their ability to buy anything they wish shows they have oodles of money hidden somewhere, but where? Are they former bank robber's, retired to the comfort's of the old farm? Confused? So is their Nephew, when he is dropped in their laps during hard times. He takes it upon himself to find out the details of his Uncles former lives.
Its Been cool watching Haley Joel Osment go from practically a baby in Forrest Gump, to a child star in Sixth Sense, on to a smashing performance in A.I. Now we see him as a pubescent, voice cracking, young teen. At first I didn't think they could fit his square pegged (practically massive persona acting-wise) into this round hole (simple, yet complicated role), but after watching just a few scenes, my reservations melted away.
Just as the Granpa in PRINCESS BRIDE would probably say this story is one of: "War, Romance, True Love, Villains, Revenge..." The list goes on. At the end of the film, and this is a nice touch, they don't quite seal the package - answer every single question. Fine by me. The average filmgoer has enough brains to come up with their own conclusion's, luckily the studio had faith in the truth of that. Secondhand Lions is one of the Best family movies of the year.

The Journey Of Natty Gann

This review is from: The Journey Of Natty Gann (DVD)
I remember wandering into my den as a young boy and shuffling through my stash of tapes. Scribbled on them were words such as "Never Ending Story", "The Secret of Nimh", "Muppets take Manhatten", "Old Yeller", "The Princess Bride", "The Dark Crystal", "Star Wars", "Karate Kid", and "Pinnocchio". Now, on the same tape, written beneath pinnocchio, and that soap we accidentally recorded once, was this movie, Nattie Gann.
When I pulled it from the others, I knew that I was going to cry. I was a soft hearted little bugger back then. (That one Benji with the couger cubs nearly put me in the hospital. Heck, even "hug-a-bunch" made me cry.) But, even as a child I knew what a good movie was. Those were the days when Marty was racing through time, trying to hook up his parents; when your best pals were a couple of Goonies. Nattie, was just another one of the guys, so to speak.
Nattie is a tough bird, fighting any boy that crosses her, and puffing cigs in the guy's bathroom. Her dad gets a job when work was hard to come by. The only catch is that its far away. When he leaves her with the sinister "Connie", Nattie ventures out into the world of the great depression. On her way she befriends the wolf, survives a train crash, and falls in love with a young John Cusack.
Even though this release is poor, it may hold you over until Disney wakes up from whatever sleep they are in. I'm not going to totally bash the big D, because they have done some spectacular dvd's, but that doesn't change the matter. If you fervently remember taking the journey along side Nattie Gann when you were younger as I did, or are in search of a great story, begin here. I think I'll cook me an egg sandwich. ~s.a.o.s.~

This review is from: Empire of the Sun (Audio CD)
Whether or not you have seen Empire of the Sun bears no matter on the strength of this soundtrack. It is one of John Williams finest moments, and will live up to the standards of most soundtrack fan's. If you have seen the movie, and disagreed with the critics of the time, you would probably agree that the music is half the movie. The sounds surrounding many haunting images are a testimony to Spielberg and Williams infinate ability to collaborate. John Williams is also known to be a huge thread that connect's both Steven Spielberg and George Lucas, some of the greatest directors of our time.
Empire of the sun, with both it's timid and aggressive tracks, will help you during need of inspiration. ~s.a.o.s.~

5.0 étoiles sur 5 Mel and Satzuki, Sept. 27 2002
This review is from: My Neighbor Totoro [Import] (DVD)
My neighbor Totoro is not only one of the finest animated films I have ever seen, it is one of the best movies period. It has enough heart to spead across a hundred film's, and still have some to spare. I hate to call it "too cute for words" but it is. Hayao Miyazaki, the director, (also doing this years Spirited Away, released in America by Disney) has really outdone himself. My neighbor Totoro has many terrific qualities, such as the emaculate detail. There are dozens of instances in which object such as tadpoles in puddles, a bottle at the bottom of a stream, butterflies swirling around, acorns spilling out of little Mel's pocket, and her hat falling off when she runs...the list could go on. (Also watch how the children walk, run, and play around, its awesomely realistic.)
The way the story is handled is so unique. An example of this happens when the children claim that they have seen Totoro, the large, furry protector of the woods. When their father hears this, he nods and says, "You were lucky to see him. Maybe one day we will all see him." Rather than the expected "Your crazy" attitude we are so use to seeing. Also when the children suspect that the house may be haunted, the dad chimes in "That would be great, every since I was little I wanted to live in a haunted house!"
Any movie that has such family love is very special. These sisters, Mel, and Satzuki, genuinly love one another, and the father loves them back. There is a scene in which the youngest sister Mel, goes to Satzuki's school just to be with her. When Satzuki attempts to tell her that she belongs back at home, Mel latches hold in a tight hug and won't let go. This type of affection is rampant in this movie, and its great to see.
My neighbor Totoro has won many deserving awards in the children and family realm (with other awards as well), and though it was made for younger audiences, it is something that adults will
also appreciate. ~s.a.o.s.~

"Congratulations! Your our eighth costumer, you win a free oven mit!"
Thanks to the review from my friend and Amazon pal, I have seen The Jerk. The thing I liked most about this movie, was that there were a large amount of chuckles, and maybe ten Hard laugh's. You couldn't ask for more. This is one of the funniest movies I have ever seen. The only quibble some may have, is that this only comes in Full-screen. But, since it is not a roaring epic, it doesn't hurt it in the least (But, I still always prefer the O.A.R.). The picture is clear and the sound stays in the center voice channel. I plan on getting The Jerk as soon as I can, and you should atleast try it. "He hates these can's! Keep away from the Can's!"

This review is from: Bully (Widescreen) [Import] (DVD)
Bully is a story that envolves the frailties of man, and revenge. Some could just look at the outer surface of Bully, and see a violent flick plastered with teen drug use and rampant sex. But, looking underneath you will see a story about teens, that on their own, even coming from good homes, stray and commit the ultimite act of violence. On their own, these character's don't stand a chance, but when they bind together, they forge a chilling bond of rage. "Want to kill a guy?" They agree it can be done. How openly and freely they commit the crime made me laugh nervously. "How far are they going to take this" I wondered. The reason I wondered so, was because the teen's don't have the self confidance of a rat in a cheese factory, how could they do such a thing. Ofcourse I had to remind myself that this was just a movie, and to calm down. Watching Bully was like mental entrapment. The characters are realistic, and seem like someone you could know. The Bully himself is one of the most despisable pieces of trash you are likely to see on film. I rank him near "Magua" on Last of the Mohican's. Bully is a story about teen's who stray, do a terrible thing that you almost want them to do, then pay the price. Its one of recent years most captivating, and real films. ~s.a.o.s.~

Return to me is a kind-hearted romance involving two people who desperately need each other. David Duchovny plays Bob the architect. He is married and deeply in love with a woman who is a heart donar. In another part of town is Grace, Minnie Driver's character. She's a sweet young Italian that need's a heart transplant to live. After Bob's wife dies in a wreck, her heart is rushed to the aid of Grace.
After a series of event's, Bob and Grace's paths cross, and soon a romance ensues. Unknown to either of them, inside of Grace, beats his wife's heart. How they find out, and how their love develops is above average. It's really terrific, and a good one for date night.

2.0 étoiles sur 5 You may need to watch it twice...!!, July 18 2002
...because I had to watch it twice to get the "proof" that is wasn't just a nightmare. Look, those of you who liked the movie, please don't get angry. I know how mad I get when someone lets the air out of a movie I love. But, this movie needs some opposition. I was content to keep my mouth shut... I pinched my lips together when otherwise I would have been up on a soap box petitioning this trash. Ouch, what a flick.
BUT! A big but. I love nearly every actor in this movie. They have all managed to find their way's into my top favorite movies. (Ex. Green Mile, Beautiful Mind, City of Angels) Unfortunately though, this movie rubbed me the wrong way. Saying this movie is great is like saying opie doesn't have freckles. (Pardon, Mr. H)
Meg Ryan plays a woman who is insecure about her marriage. Why this? Her husband (David Morse (Hearts in Atlantis) - a.k.a. awesome actor in everything he does) is a captured dam builder. The Latino army sees his dam operation as a nuisance. Russell Crowe (a.k.a. cool as peanut butter in everything he does) hop's on the scene to woo the unfortunate. That's about it. Some decent action is the only thing that makes this worth your time. The romance is not only shabby, it doesn't happen. There is only some minor friction. True Lies* would be a good substitute for this.
Not even for the die-hard's. Your's respectfully. s.a.o.s.
