5.0 étoiles sur 5 Tops!, June 5 2004
Catherine Zeta-Jones looks superb and gives a sterling performance in her role as one half of a vaudeville act with her deceased sister (whom she killed because she caught her sleeping with her husband). Renee Zellweger is captivating as the young wannabe who aspires to be something like what Zeta-Jones is in the movie. They both meet up in jail however, because Zellweger kills the man whom she ends up hating, and Zeta-Jones is in jail for killing her sister. They both employ the assistance Richard Gere, the expensive fast-talking successful lawyer, to get out of jail. In the process, they each try to win the favours of the media and grab the headlines of the papers.
First, the score, the singing, the dancing are so good that I can watch each scene over and over and still feel the magic in it! Secondly, the acting of course, by each of the actors featured in the movie, is superb. Thirdly, the set production and the costumes were dazzling and so well-coordinated. The director evidently put in a lot of hard work into this and it pays. This is no Moulin Rouge. In this film, the director has done to me what I think Baz Luhrmann couldn't do in Moulin Rouge - which is to successfully blend aspects of film with aspects of musicals seamlessly. The acting is dramatic but each actor fits the role so perfectly that you hardly suspect they're acting... you'd think they are really like that in person! And the music is so well-composed and played, that anyone who watches this will want to dance to it. My daughter is barely 2 years old, and she loves this film like she loves the other film about dancing : Strictly Ballroom. Great entertainment! (unless you're not into musicals...)

4.0 étoiles sur 5 Cute and entertaining, June 5 2004
Catherine Zeta-Jones plays the star actress with a diva attitude, Julia Roberts is her ever-so-kind and helpful sister and personal assistant, and John Cusack is the love-sick estranged husband of Catherine Zeta-Jones'. Although they have been living apart for a year, are going to be divorced, and try to avoid each other, Zeta-Jones and Cusack both star in a movie which the movie's producer is anxious to earn big bucks from. Billy Cristal is the PR guy hired by the movie's producer to encourage (let's say, "dupe") Zeta-Jones and Cusack into making a star appearance at the film's premiere and he also orchestrates a series of "scandals" for the reporters and tabloids, just to make more money (as they say, no publicity is bad publicity, or something like that.) In the process, Zeta-Jones and Cusack end up in all sorts of funny, embarassing circumstances which they both try very desperately to extricate themselves from.
Cusack is not at his best, but he's entertaining. Roberts is looking good (and I wonder if she did really put on all that weight for this movie, cos it looks so real!). Zeta-Jones is stunning and ever-so-convincing in these diva roles.
I wouldn't say this is a great movie... but its a good one for renting for those nights in (with lots of crisps and popcorn at the side!). It does have enough unpredictability and gags in it to keep you chuckling, and the nice little happy ending will make you go "Aw[...] with a smile :)

5.0 étoiles sur 5 Another Spielberg success!, June 5 2004
Tom Cruise is John Anderton, a cop in this futuristic thriller. Together with Burgess, they developed PreCrime, a state-run programme which utilises biological and technological advances to predict crimes even before they happen. Three "precogs" (human "mutants" with extraodinarily acute psychic-like abilities) are at the center of this technology. One day at the swimming pool, John's young son is abducted by a mysterious stranger, whom John has never been able to trace. Through a string of premeditated circumstances, John ends up killing a man who was responsible for abducting and (he assumed) killed his son. He gets put away, but that is not it. One of the "precogs" keeps having flashback memories of a woman getting killed, but nobody has been able to trace the killer. Eventually, (I don't want to spoil this for you!) justice is served :)
This movie is about the future, but it does make you think : what if one day we can all predict everything that's going to happen, and change them before they happen? Can that be a good thing? I think not. Life is full of choices and possibilities. Once these choices and possibilities are taken away from us, then really, why should we even bother to live it?
Premeditating the future is an interesting idea but imagine if someone told you you're gonna kill someone tomorrow. Given the right circumstances, you end up at the point where you are going to kill someone but haven't yet. If you recognise the fact that life is about choice, you know you can prove the prediction wrong by not killing. But if you do not recognise the fact that you can choose what you do and change what they predict about you, then you have really lost the plot - i.e. you'd be just a pawn in someone else's game.
Great sci-fi thriller. Very fast paced, very meaningful theme, you never really know what's gonna happen, and great special effects.

4.0 étoiles sur 5 Good read and some fasinating information!, May 21 2004
I bought this book cheap second hand, and I'm surprised what a good purchase it was. This book is a basic beginners sort of guide into the world of anthropology/zoology but it is tailored to the average reader, and contains lots of interesting facts you may not already know about the animal kingdom, especially about the monkeys and apes. This book is bent towards the Darwinist theory of evolution, probably one of the most popular "scientific" theories people are taught today. Yet all this is still not much more than speculation, for there isn't ample concrete evidence to prove that this theory is true. Still, the question is : what if it is true? And if it is, then all these incredible things said in the book (I was very amused when reading the chapter about how and why human beings have nipples, lips, etc.) could be true! As I said - almost unbelievable, funny at times, and so fascinating! The book isn't overly lengthy at all, so its pretty short and sweet, but most of the general public will definitely learn at least one or two things after reading it.

4.0 étoiles sur 5 Easy to follow instructions, some rather good recipes, May 21 2004
I am somewhat of a cookbook collector, but when I first started this was one of the first cookbooks I ever bought, and it did serve its purpose - which was to teach me how to cook some proper satisfying meals. The instructions are clear and easy to follow, and the ingredients are very easy to get a hold of if you live in the UK. Although some recipes are really uninspired and plain, some really do their job well and are regulars on our dinner "menu" at home. Good cookbook for beginning cooks or amateurs...

3.0 étoiles sur 5 Some spectacular dance scenes, May 21 2004
I've never really been a great fan of Baz Luhrmann's. Moulin Rouge was also a 3 out of 5 rating, in my opinion. I think it must be his style of cinematography - its neither theatre nor film, its halfway in-between... but I'm like this : If I watch a film I want to see a film, and if I want to watch a musical, I go to the theatre. Still, I gave this a shot after reading lots of glimmering reviews about it here. What I can say is this : the dancing was spectacular, and I love dancing, so that was why I gave this movie 3 stars. Apart from that, its just a run-of-the-mill love story... The lush prop sets and costumes might be a main attraction for some who loved this film enough to give it 5 out of 5, but I tend to look for something original and a bit different in a movie, and this just wasn't it.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 An engaging, quirky film, May 21 2004
This review is from: Talk to Her (Bilingual) (DVD)
There are 4 main characters to the story but each one is engaging in his/her own way. None of them possess "perfect" good looks but the character development and the plot and all those things that go into enhancing the movie : the cinematography, the score... just all blend together to create a very interesting film with interesting characters, moving the viewer along the peaks and the lows of each scene. At times it really made you think, other times, its pure scandal and quite thought-provoking, yet it does all this on a very basic and powerful level that can reach all types of audience. I don't know why some of the critics complain about this film having no "meaning" or purpose. Can't a good film be about the idiosyncracies of everyday life itself? Surely not every good film must be full of preach and talk about purpose... Some other critic said it makes no sense that the bullfighter was afraid of the snake... Does it ever make sense to you why some people are afraid of cockroaches and yet are not afraid of dogs and vice versa? The bottom line is, it doesn't always have to "make sense". Life just doesn't always make sense! People aren't always rational!

Three friends (Vinz, Hubert and Sayid) are from the ghettos of France, living in the projects and there is seemingly no way out of that life for them as the society and especially the police discriminate against blacks, arabs from the projects... At least that is the message the movie seems to project to me. I had a really hard time following the things the actors say because the movie is in black and white and the subtitles are in black and white AND they overlap the movie picture... needless to say, many words are unreadable most of the time and taking the time to guess what they said is perhaps most exasperating when in this sort of low budget movie, the conversation between the characters matters A LOT! However, the movie's plot was easy enough to follow... police beat up their friend Abdel during a riot, who dies in hospital, and Vinz who is not too intelligent or able to control his temper gets ahold of a police pistol during the riot. He vows to shoot a police if they piss him off (actually he will shoot anyone who dares piss him off). These 3 boys take the train to Paris where they look for a friend who owes Sayid a bit of money. I will not go into details here but basically their voyage into Paris was a disaster as these boys from the 'hood cannot resist doing something "naughty" every hour. They miss the last train and spend the entire night finding things to amuse themselves, including breaking into people's cars and starting a fight in a classy art exhibition and also later a scuffle with skinheads in the streets. It all end in tears eventually, with at least one of them dead and maybe one police officer dead too, I shan't say who. The movie was, on the whole, thought-provoking for someone like me who grew up in an urban environment but never lived in a ghetto and can only empathise with what the central characters (or anyone else living in that situation) feels. If that's what the director set out to do, he certainly succeeded, so I am giving the movie 3 stars for making some impact. It could have been a better viewing experience however, if only something was done to make the subtitles more readable. The movie is shot in semi-documentary style so it might not appeal to those who prefer something more like your usual run-of-the-mill drama movies.

4.0 étoiles sur 5 Intelligent movie with lots of memorable lines..., April 25 2004
Its about a 44-year old airline hostess Jackie Brown who's followed by the police for transporting money and drugs for Ordell Robbie, a guns and drugs trafficker. Robert Forster is Max Cherry, a bail bondsman who's done business with Ordell twice (once for Beaumont, who worked for Ordell but got killed by Ordell for being unreliable). Ordell has a million dollars stashed away in Mexico (dirty money he made), and relies on Jackie to smuggle it back to him in the US every time she flies. When the police found her out, needless to say, Ordell had no scruples about killing her, unless she came up with a plan around the situation, which she did. Anyway, Jackie's plan was ingenious and she manages to screw up both the police and Ordell and takes all the money for herself in the end, with the help of Max who actually developed a fondness for her. Like many Tarantino movies, there's a bit of love, lots of violence and swearing, and a twist in every plot. This is a good one because the plan Jackie came up with was so clever and so risky. At the end of the movie, I had to watch it again and the clever-ness of it all became even clearer. No doubt it will get the thumbs-up from women everywhere who will say "Thanks to Jackie Brown, who proved that older women can be attractive and smarter than everyone else..." or people who say "Thanks to Jackie Brown, who is yet another example of a black american women that kicked ass", etc.. Whatever you say about this movie, you have to admit, its really Tarantino's masterpiece. I'm going to watch Kill Bill 2 next!

5.0 étoiles sur 5 Leonardo is a star!, April 25 2004
The storyline itself is unusual, but given that its a true story, it was just waiting for some Hollywood director to spot it as a good storyline and casting Leonardo as the lead was a good choice. I've never been a big fan of him, especially since he's made recent movies which I found cheesy like soppy dramas (Titanic, Romeo and Juliet...) but I was very impressed with his performance in Who's Eating Gilbert Grape and in this movie, his acting talents impressed me again. He is very compelling as Frank Abignale Jr, and Tom Hanks makes a good appearance (but not very memorable) as a secret agent who tracks down Leonardo eventually and has him arrested. Its quite a long movie IMO, but its rather unpredictable and really enjoyable to watch. Better than a lot of the rubbish Hollywood produces these days...
