Yes, everybody describes this movie as "gritty" and I do too. "The French Connection" was filmed in a style which makes you feel like you're following these two guys around as they try to figure out what the drug dealers of New York City and Marseille are up to. The storytelling is very well-done, as we are given signs of both hope and despair as the police find clues leading to when the big drug switch is going to take place. This movie paved the way for some great film acting careers for Gene Hackman, who's still going strong in movies like "The Royal Tenenbaums," and Roy Schieder, who we'll always remember as Chief Brody in "Jaws," a classic in its own right. If you want to know why everybody says that the 1970s were a great film decade, see "The French Connection" (and also "Chinatown" if you have time!)

5.0 étoiles sur 5 Awesome score!, June 4 2002
This score carries all the excitement of the movie with it. I especially like track 3, "Costume Montage." Danny Elfman is a genius. I used to think that he could only write dark, dreary scores. This one is somewhat dark, but it's way more exciting than such scores as Edward Scissorhands and even Batman. This score is closer to Men In Black (also Elfman) in style. The sound quality of the disc is also very good. Sounds just like in the movie theater when I play it on my computer speakers. If you like Danny Elfman's work, get this CD!

5.0 étoiles sur 5 Secrecy and Water - It's Chinatown, April 28 2002
I just saw Chinatown for the first time, since I was told that anybody taking a screenwriting class *must* see it. The story is full of tons of little things worth looking at and thinking about. Many minor characters, strange clues, deceits, and double-crosses to be found here. If you ever want to see Jack Nicholson in a good protagonist role, check this movie out. There's really only one scene in the movie where he gets frighteningly violent, and even that's only when he's desperate for some answers. The DVD is reasonbly priced for what you get. You get a great movie made in the classic style of the 1930s, as well as an in-depth documentary which includes interviews with Roman Polanski (director), Robert Towne (writer), and Robert Evans (producer). Screenwriting students, see this movie, or at least read the screenplay! Everybody else, if you like crime movies with interesting surprises, check Chinatown out! Enjoy.

OK, there was a time when I just didn't feel like seeing this movie, because I dismissed it as one of those cheesy musicals that Hollywood put out year after year when this one was made, but then I actually saw it. What a fun, fun movie! The music is exceptional, the story is incredibly amusing, and there are plenty of classic moments to be found here besides Mr. Kelly hanging from the lamp pole. Anybody who gets through the "Make 'em Laugh" number without at least chuckling isn't human. Lots of funny jokes about the times, like people calling talking motion pictures "vulgar!" Well, I'm not gonna give the whole thing away, so just check out this movie. It'll change the way you think about musicals forever.

Everyone knows of the shower scene "Psycho," and most people know the ending even if they haven't seen it. Even so, I won't reveal it here. Unfortunately, I knew the ending before I watched it, and even so, the film is amazing. The black & white photography gives it just the right look, and the acting is right on target. Sometimes in old movies, the acting comes across as cheesy, but in "Psycho," it's totally believeable. Norman Bates and the unseen "mother" are great. Janet Leigh has a good scream, and that musical score gives me chills every time (REEE! REEE! REEE! REEE!). If you're not into horror movies or haven't seen any movies by the Master of Suspense, then be sure to see this one first, and then take a shower! We all go a little mad sometimes!

This movie stands out. This is because there is so much passion behind this movie. The filmmakers went through alot to make it, and the final piece really makes you think. Alot of people say that the ending is weak, but I think it works, it's just not clear cut. It's artistic! The shots in this movie are among the most unbelievable shots in any film, from the fan/helicopter symbolism at the beginning, to the shadows and the "rituals" found in the ending, and all the anger and gunplay found in the middle. This movie is more watchable and less violent than movies like Platoon and Saving Private Ryan. Apocalypse Now tells the story more comfortably, and yet it's still powerful and you get the same out of it. Thank you, Francis Ford Coppola, for this masterpiece.

I just watched this tonight for the first time. Hilarious movie!I like how Woody turned to talk to the audience at random times, just like Shakespeare. Woody Allen is definitely an inspiration for many of today's comedians, particularly Jerry Seinfeld for sure. This is one of the best romantic comedies I've seen in a while. Woody Allen breaks many cliche barriers and has created an excellent film. I recommend this one to anybody who likes comedy. Watch for appearences by Jeff Goldblum and Christopher Walken. The DVD needs more bonuses.

Perhaps the most artistic account of a band's history, "The Doors," a film by Oliver Stone, delivers a rock solid movie experience. Oliver Stone has a way of capturing historic detail in a way that no other director has done before. It is obvious that the filmmakers have read about all the incidents and stories of how the band formed, how it succeeded, how it ended, and what happened afterwards. Detail like the scenes that show how "Light My Fire" was created give you a new insight as to how this group made it. The tripping scenes add alot to the movie, as the viewer gets to see what it was like to be Jim Morrison, or anybody in that era of drugs and sex. Being relatively young compared to the people in this movie, I feel that I've learned alot by watching this movie, and anybody who thinks that the sixties were a time of love and peace and relaxing should see this movie and then think about that some more.

4.0 étoiles sur 5 Lots of fun, July 30 2001
Most of the negative criticism that this movie received was a result of a misunderstanding. A lot of people thought that this was an attempt at an original storyline, miserably failed. This was actually supposed to be a satire of Batman and other such comic books. The Blue Raja? The Shoveler? Come on! :-) The movie has some great lines and scenes (Why don't you tell me? Why don't you tell me? Why don't YOU TELL ME?), and lots of funny characters, one of which can only become invisible when nobody's looking. LOL! It's a great movie, but it's time will pass.

Ce commentaire est de: The Doors (Audio CD)
Yes, yes, I know I wasn't there. I wasn't born until 10 years after Jim Morrison's death, but this album is timeless. There are two standards on this album, Break on Through and Light My Fire. You've all heard them, even if you didn't know what it was called. It's amazing to think that some of the lyrics were considered profane at the time, such as the lyric "girl we couldn't get much higher." <gasp> See "The Doors," directed by Oliver Stone to get an intersting point of view as to how this album was made. Jim Morrison and organist Ray Manzarek were on the beach one day, talking about what they want to do with their lives, and Ray says "lets start a rock 'n' roll band and make a million bucks!" One thing led to another, and we're given this initial Doors album, and it rocks. I bet that in about 30 years from now (maybe less, maybe more) they will be playing this album in elementary school music classes to teach them music history. It's that good. If you live near a desert, take this album, get in your car, and go for a drive in the desert. It'll be an amazing experience. Enjoy!
