Kathy Smith: Power Step Workout
Kathy Smith: Power Step Workout

5.0 étoiles sur 5 A great workout!, May 12 2004
I'm a total klutz when it comes to exercise videos, but Kathy Smith is my favorite instructor. She doesn't do fancy steps that take multiple viewings to "catch on" to, she doesn't do anything unsafe, and always gives low and higher impact exercise options.
This step workout still makes me sweat and my heart beat fast enough for a good aerobic workout, even after working out six times a week for months. The music is innocuous enough that it's not annoying, even though I do the workout about twice a week (I rotate four workout videos). Kathy has a few annoying whoops, but not enough to irritate me. I like that she has you take your pulse twice during the workout, to make sure you're working at your target heartrate. The workout is about 45 minutes long without the cooldown (I confess that I skip it and just walk around for a few minutes instead)

And Then It Rained . . .: ...And Then the Sun Came Out...

5.0 étoiles sur 5 great book!, Sept. 9 2003
People are happy when it starts to rain in the city after a dry spell. A little boy and his father enjoy the rain while cozy and dry at a cafe, and several people are shown doing "indoor things". After several days of rain, the complaints begin and everyone is sick of the wet weather. When the little boy asks his dad when the rain will stop, he gets a rhyme in reply to the effect that he'll get his weather wish soon.
The reader is told to turn the book around to find out what happens. When you turn it around and start reading from the back, you find that the sun has come out. The little boy and his father walk happily down the sunny street to enjoy ice cream at the cafe, and the same people who previously enjoyed their indoor activities are now enjoying getting out and about. Human nature being what it is, everyone is soon complaining about the heat. When the little boy asks his father when it will stop being so hot, he is given the rhyme again and told his weather wish will come true soon. The reader is again instructed to turn the book over to find out what happens and the story begins all over again with the opening words about the rain coming to the city.
My five-year-old absolutely loved this book and asked for it night after night until I had to return it to the library.

The Kettles Get New Clothes
The Kettles Get New Clothes
by Dayle Ann Dodds
Edition: Hardcover
14 used & new from CDN$ 0.84

5.0 étoiles sur 5 my 5-year-old loved this book!, Sept. 9 2003
This reminded me of the Berenstain book Old Hat, New Hat -- with a twist. The Kettles, a family of dogs, go into town for their once-a-year shopping trip to purchase the same old clothes they always wear. They find that the store they always visit has been replaced by an upscale shop, but enter and find an eager clerk.
He brings out a series of outfits, each more colorful and wilder than the previous set, to everyone's dismay except the youngest Kettle. She alone seems to love the checks, dots, and plaids. Finally the clerk brings out the plainest thing he has (in total and comical desperation), pleasing everyone except the baby. Fortunately, everyone leaves the store happy in the end.
My five-year-old requested this book several nights running after I brought it home from the library and I plan to purchase it for her birthday. It's a funny story with cute pictures to pore over.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 what a wonderful book!, Aug. 16 2000
This book is perfect for children to read before entering puberty! Robie Harris explains male and female body parts (inside and out), what changes take place during puberty, how an sperm fertilizes an egg, what sex is, what love is, what happens during pregnancy (including how a baby grows and how one is born), different types of families (gay, straight, adoption, etc), good and bad touches, and even a bit about HIV and AIDS.
The author explains everything very honestly without being judgmental, although he leaves room for a parent to explain his or her own values to a child. For example, while explaining masturbation he writes, "Every family has its own thoughts and feelings about masturbation...Some people and religions think it's wrong to masturbate."
The book covers a lot of information, but presents it in a fun and simple way. The cartoon illustrations are complete without being terribly graphic, and the small bird and bee throughout the book serve as "tour guides". This book will definitely be on my bookshelf when my daughter starts asking questions.

The Family Tree Detective: Cracking the Case of Your Family's Story
by Ann Douglas
Edition: Hardcover
14 used & new from CDN$ 11.52

5.0 étoiles sur 5 Everything the young genealogist needs to get started!, Aug. 16 2000
This book explains clearly and simply to kids how to get started researching their family tree. Ann Douglas delves into a bit of genetics and then talks about how kids can get started -- how to interview family members (including giving sample interview questions to use), tips on getting people's stories on audio or videotape, how to store their research, and gives great ideas on how to share the information learned with family members.
The bright, colorful illustrations give the book a fun look, and the charts throughout the book are very helpful.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 What a great book!, May 3 2000
This book is perfect to explain what a new baby will be like to a sibling-to-be. It shows (in large pictures and fairly simple text) how babies eat (shows breast feeding and bottle feeding), how much they sleep, what they see and hear, how they learn to crawl, walk, and begin to talk...pretty much covers it all!
