4.0 étoiles sur 5 IF YOU LIKE PLOT TWISTS YOU WILL LIKE THIS MOVIE., July 16 2004
"Vanilla Sky" is a remake of the Spanish film "Abre Los Ojos (Open Your Eyes)", and if you have seen the original film, you know that "Vanilla Sky" was made almost in the same way, but there a few key differences. The camera angles, the plot and most of scenes are almost the same in both movies, but "Vanilla Sky" uses a different music, this movie has a rock-oriented music score. Also, the character played by Cameron Diaz is an improvement over the original character, because Cameron adds more depth with her performance. Of course, since "Vanilla Sky" is a Hollywood movie, the visual effects and the budget are bigger this time.
"Vanilla Sky" offers a lot of plot twists, so the first screening might be mind-blowing to some viewers, if you like simple plots perhaps "Vanilla Sky" is not your movie. But if you like to be tricked with the characters and the plot, this film is for you. "Vanilla Sky" plays with the time, the movie goes back and forth between past and present, and sometimes you don't know if some events really happened or if the main character is just having a nightmare.
The cast in "Vanilla Sky" is very interesting: Tom Cruise is David, the main character, and Cruise gave one of his most inspired performances in recent years. Cameron Diaz is outstanding as Julie, she improved the character from "Open Your Eyes". Penelope Cruz plays exactly the same role, yes, the same role in both movies, one might think that she would improve her performance this time, but nop, she reprises her role step by step. Jason Lee plays Brian, the best friend of David, and he does a good job here, he adds sympathy and charm to his character. Kurt Russell plays McCabe, the psychiatrist that tries to solve the puzzle.
"Vanilla Sky" is an effective thriller, packed with plot twists and good music, if you like this movie, I strongly recommend you to see the original film "Abre Los Ojos (Open Your Eyes)", you might find that both films share similarities, but they are different movie experiences.

This review is from: The Score (DVD)
"The Score" is a thriller with slow pace, but that is not a factor because two screen legends and the best actor of his generation are in the leading roles. So the semi-slow pace is an advantage, because Robert De Niro, Edward Norton and Marlon Brando displayed better their acting talent. I don't want them dodging bullets and climbing walls all the time, I want to see their performances.
However, "The Score" still has some stunts, and above all, a smart direction. The movie has a lot of interesting camera angles, a nice choreography for the stunts, cool gadgets, and a very welcome movie score, by Howard Shore. But that's just the icing in the cake, because the three actors are the main reason to see "The Score".
Robert De Niro's latest films aren't exactly nice movies, so perhaps "The Score" is the latest good movie that he has appear on. Also, "The Score" is the last chance to see Marlon Brando (R.I.P.) at the top of his game, we know that he didn't like his acting career very much, so "The Score" was the last time that he showed us his acting talent, perhaps because he was stimulated to share scenes with Robert De Niro and the promising Edward Norton.
The DVD doesn't have a lot of features, but they are good. The audio commentary is very informative because not only Frank Oz, the director of the movie shares his experiences, but also Rob Hahn, the director of photography reveals some tricks and resources used to film "The Score". The Behind-the-Scenes feature and the additional footage are really interesting, because we can see a lot of Marlon Brando's famous improvisation. So the DVD features are few, but they are solid, plus the audio and video quality are very good, because this is a recent film.
"The Score" is not a groundbreaking film, but the cast is stunning, the plot is familiar but it's also interesting, the direction is smart, the music is good, and all that results in an amusing film. Specially recommendable for fans of Robert De Niro, Marlon Brando or Edward Norton.

"The Fast And The Furious" is obviously a guilty pleasure. The movie has amazing cars, attractive women (Michelle Rodriguez, Jordana Brewster), corny dialogues, summer movie visual stunts, bad actors (Vin Diesel) and a MTV movie soundtrack. But the funny thing is that the movie works despite all that (or perhaps because all that).
"The Fast And The Furious" is an amusing movie because the director and cast never pretended to be part of a groundbreaking film, they knew that they were filming a popcorn movie, so they enjoyed the whole process, and the result is evident, "The Fast And The Furious" is an entertaining movie.
Of course, this kind of trick only works once, but Hollywood don't care, the studios love to repeat successful formulas, even if they know they are going to release a bad movie, they do it because they also know that it's going to do well in the box office. So Hollywood made a sequel, "2 Fast 2 Furious", but obviously that movie is just average or below average. This kind of formulas (cars + visual effects + attractive women) only work once.
Anyway, "The Fast And The Furious" it's a very amusing, entertaining film. I would recommend you to rent it first, and if you like it a lot, well, get it. If you don't like it that much, at least you will have a good time for two hours.

This review is from: Ghost World [Import] (DVD)
There is a very, very interesting generation of young actresses in Hollywood. Not only they are pretty, but also they are very talented, and they usually choose to appear in independent movies rather than appear in summer Blockbusters. That generation includes interesting actresses like Sarah Polley, Christina Ricci, Thora Birch and Scarlett Johansson, to name a few. Luckily in "Ghost World" appear Thora and Scarlett.
When "Ghost World" was released, a lot of people, included myself, were impressed with Thora Birch, a young actress with a unique beauty and talent. So after I saw her in "American Beauty", I couldn't wait to see her in another movie, and that film is "Ghost World", an independent movie that explores in an unique way the complex transition of the teenage days to the "real world".
"Ghost World" has a very talented cast, in addition to Thora, we can find Scarlett Johansson and Steve Buscemi. Scarlett steals the show in "Ghost World", obviously it was expected to be Thora's movie, but Scarlett is very solid in this movie and she got the attention of other independent filmmakers like Sofia Coppola, two years later, Sofia Coppola cast Scarlett to appear in "Lost In Translation", so "Ghost World" was the "commercial" breakthrough of Scarlett. Plus, she is gorgeous.
Steve Buscemi, another independent spirit, also steals a lot of scenes in "Ghost World", we know him very well from other films like "Fargo" or "Reservoir Dogs". With such acting talent, "Ghost World" is a must-see. The movie offers a unique point of view of the teenage world, this is not your regular "American Pie" movie, so I recommend "Ghost World" to fans of independent cinema.

4.0 étoiles sur 5 NOT ONE OF YOUR GRANDPA'S WESTERNS., July 5 2004
"The Wild Bunch" is not the typical western that tells the story of a bunch of good ol' cowboys versus the mean ol' Indians, this movie goes beyond the cliches of the earlier westerns, so in some way "The Wild Bunch" resembles more to a Spaghetti Western than a John Wayne-versus-the-indians western.
Sam Peckinpah took two steps forward the use of violence in the movies, he show the world how to use violence in a movie to produce visual art. Of course, some might complain about the cruel scenes in "The Wild Bunch", but open minded people know that the violence in the movies is not even close to the cruelty of the real world violence, plus, the violence in a movie can produce visual art if it's used in the right way, like Sam Peckinpah or Sergio Leone did in their movies.
"The Wild Bunch" has an excellent cast: the always efficient William Holden and Ernest Borgnine plus a great supporting cast that includes names like Robert Ryan, Warren Oates and Emilio Fernández. Also, the director Sam Peckinpah gave importance to each character, and that contributed to form a solid story. The cinematography is spectacular, "The Wild Bunch" has a lot of impressive camera angles that show the cruelty of the bullets and explosions, and the movie has some of the most impressive scenes ever put to film.
"The Wild Bunch" is in a very selected group of westerns. That list includes movies like "High Noon". "The Searchers", "Stagecoach", "The Good, The Bad And The Ugly" and "Once Upon A Time In The West", among few others. That list includes the best westerns, and "The Wild Bunch" belongs in the list.

4.0 étoiles sur 5 SOMETHING RARE TO FIND...A UNIQUE FILM., July 5 2004
"Waking Life" is an experimental film, it combines dreamy, atmospheric animation with philosophy and animated cameos. The film doesn't have a linear plot, as a matter of fact it doesn't have a plot at all, because "Waking Life" it's a collection of individual segments, each one of them contains a monologue, or sometimes a collective speech about existential topics.
By the way, since "Waking Life" offers many points of view about a lot of existential topics, there will be some opinions that you will agree with, and other opinions that you won't agree, and that's part of the charm of the movie. "Waking Life" doesn't want to tell you the truth about the human being, "Waking Life" invites the audience to think, to form an individual opinion about the different elements of our existences. So yes, "Waking Life" requires an active audience.
The movie discusses a lot of elements: God, the dreams, the individuality of each person, the existence of the human being, among many others. "Waking Life" offers a lot to talk or think about, so this is a fascinating film, because sometimes the speeches get so complicated or complex that you constantly are trying to solve the puzzle in your mind.
Visually "Waking Life" is one of the most daring animated films that I have ever seen, you think that Disney will ever make a movie like this one? Obviously not. This is independent cinema at its best. Once in a while it's refreshing to see unique movies like this one, the director and writer Richard Linklater did a great job with "Waking Life".

3.0 étoiles sur 5 YES, ANOTHER TEEN MOVIE, BUT THIS ONE IS ENJOYABLE., June 30 2004
I was reluctant to see "American Pie", because every time I heard the name of the movie, I really was hearing "just another lame teen movie" or another "Animal House" wannabe, or the "Porky's" of my generation, but worse. Well, one day I had nothing to do, so I decided to watch it. I was very surprised by "American Pie" because the movie is actually funny.
"American Pie" does have some elements that could have contributed to make another silly movie, like the gross-out humor, the usual share of T&A, the fouled language, in few words, the typical ingredients of a cheap teen movie.
But "American Pie" has key elements that set the movie apart from its predecessors: the cast is kinda charismatic, some of these actors and actresses will be lost in oblivion and others will be famous, but it's hard to deny that these cast is funny and sure they had fun while they were filming "American Pie". Special mention to Eugene Levy, he brings the wisdom of a veteran, and mixes very well with the young newcomers, of course, he steals every scene that he appears on.
The girls in this kind of movies usually are attractive, and thankfully (to the guys) "American Pie" has pretty girls like Tara Reid, Alyson Hannigan, Shannon Elizabeth and Mena Suvari, not all these girls have real acting talent, but at least in "American Pie" they got the work done.
On the other hand, this original "American Pie" movie is the only one truly worthy in the series. I'm sure there are a lot of fans of the second and third movies, but the most demanding audiences will agree that the only decent "American Pie" movie, is this one, the original.

3.0 étoiles sur 5 PRETTY MUCH THE SAME MOVIE., June 30 2004
"Analyze That" follows almost exactly the same patterns that the original movie set. And perhaps that's not too bad, because we got another amusing movie from the duo De Niro / Crystal. The movie is funny, but for some reason we get the feeling that "Analyze That" could have been even better. This comedy has the right ingredients: Billy Crystal, one of the best comedians of his generation, Robert De Niro, the best actor of his generation, and a very charismatic supporting cast, including Lisa Kudrow.
Crystal and De Niro reprise their roles as a therapist and mob-boss patient, and of course they are the main reason why this movie has funny moments, Crystal plays the funny guy and De Niro plays the though guy, only this time he turns -apparently- into an old softy singing guy. De Niro isn't the typical comedian, we are used to see him as a mobster, but not as a singing mobster, so when he sings, we laugh.
"Analyze That" offers some laughs, not too many, but this sequel still can be considered as an amusing comedy, of course, we get the sensation that could have been even better, but if you liked the first one, you'll like "Analyze That".

3.0 étoiles sur 5 A GREAT DUO STARS IN AN ELEGANT COMEDY., June 30 2004
Cary Grant and Ingrid Bergman are always delightful to see in a movie, because they were two of the greatest actors of their era. "Indiscreet" isn't the typical romantic comedy, because it's much more subtle than that kind of movies. Cary Grant appeared in a lot of excellent comedies like "Bringing Up Baby", "His Girl Friday" or "The Philadelphia Story" to name a few, but Ingrid Bergman wasn't the usual choice to cast in a comedy, perhaps because her specialty were the dramas ("Casablanca", of course). Well, despite that Ingrid did a great work in "Indiscreet".
In this movie our classy duo must overcome adversities of all kind, and to be honest, I didn't laugh out loud with "Indiscreet", but I was interested in the plot at all time. Perhaps a different casting would have resulted in a very standard movie, but Cary and Ingrid can make a good movie even better.
So if you are interested in movies where Cary Grant appears, or you are interested in Ingrid Bergman's filmography, well, "Indiscreet" is a good choice. Good movie.

Usually when I hear "an 80's comedy" I really hear "a silly, gross, stupid comedy"...but not this time my friends, because "Splash" is one of the funniest films of the 1980s. You see, it really has it all: funny jokes, tender moments, romance, an intelligent script, and a very charismatic cast.
In "Splash" we can see a very young Tom Hanks (in his comedic period), a promising Darryl Hannah (she didn't quite reach stardom, but in this movie she is great), a hilarious John Candy (in one of his finest and funniest performances), and Eugene Levy, he plays a wacky and clueless scientist.
"Splash" is a movie that effectively combines comedy with romance and fantasy, perhaps the movie succeeded so well because the people involved in the film were youthful and energetic, and they put their hearts in the making of "Splash". This movie is highly recommendable.
