5.0 étoiles sur 5 Excellent book, content is just what the title says, Jan. 7 2014
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
Currently my number one favourite book on dressing well. I think I love this book because it answers the question so many of us career women want to know -- what do we wear to work when the men around us are in dress pants and even suits? It's not as obvious for us as it is for them.

One of the biggest lessons I gained from this book was the impression I make walking from the parking lot, through the building, and to my desk. It's not enough to have the stylish shoes stored at my desk, what do people see me walking around in before that? I had never thought about it before and the author makes a persuasive argument to consider this question to truly be sure one is dressing appropriately for the workplace.

I would give this to any younger woman starting out in her career or any older colleague struggling to adjust to a new workplace or to get out of dressing frumpy.

It's also a good read if you're looking to refresh your work wardrobe. The point the author makes about how a work outfit is most complete when there are three items will be the most helpful in that circumstance. You might even want to skip to that section first. Have fun reading it!

5.0 étoiles sur 5 Fun, quick read and surprisingly feminist, Jan. 7 2014
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
You wouldn't initially guess just how feminist this book is in tone and content, but it really is when read by a reader who doesn't take themselves too seriously.

As someone who loves vintage and mid-century modern, I also found this a fun book to read when the author reports on the literature, advertisements, and media of the time period.

This is a short read and I intend to read it again.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 Prefect reference book, shows approaches for different sizes of scarves, Jan. 7 2014
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
The first thing you're going to notice about this book when it arrives is that the cover feels like it has been wrapped in a scarf. Wonderful, thoughtful touch.

Love this handy manual. One of the better elements about this book is that it shows what to do with different sized scarves. I found other manuals on the market just focused on one size, just square, for example.

While this book does not have every approach to following and adding scarves to one's wardrobe, it does have the ones you'll see most on the street. I particularly liked several of the ones for long, rectangular scarves perfect for adding to Fall and Spring outdoor wear.

Very happy with my purchase.

4.0 étoiles sur 5 Decent introductory book to dressing less frumpy, Jan. 7 2014
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I wish I could give this book the full 5 stars, but the book felt short about a chapter. Somewhere in the middle there should have been a discussion about archetypes of style, explaining how items are used to express personality traits, to help readers figure out in greater detail what their "authentic style" really is.

If you're looking for an introduction to dressing less frumpy, this is definitely one of the better books to start with. Then, after reading it, you can move on to move detailed books.

Good luck on your quest to be your fabulous self!

5.0 étoiles sur 5 Definitely worth buying, Jan. 3 2014
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
Having bought and enjoyed several books on building a wardrobe, I felt this one was one of the better ones out there. The concept of just 30 items forming the basis of a working wardrobe truly valuable advice. I have recommended this book to friends.

As a northern Canadian resident, I found a few of the references to Australian weather worth a chuckle or two, but nothing I would complain about. In fact, I found such references endearing and I would definitely buy another book from this same author.

The images and Tips displayed really well on my kindle.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 Excellent, it answered many of my questions that none of the other books could, Jan. 30 2009
I'm really, really happy with this book, it totally delivered on its promise to answer etiquette questions for the modern-day bride.

Unlike the other wedding books I borrowed from the public library, this one I actually read cover to cover. I'd be surprised to hear if someone is unhappy buying this book because I found it so much better and realistic in its advice than the other books I consulted!

2.0 étoiles sur 5 Not especially unique and it's not actually about canning, just preserving, Jan. 30 2009
Don't be fooled into thinking that this is a book about canning because it's not. Almost all of the recipes are for items that are stored in the fridge for a short amount of time. The recipes here also didn't seem all that unique, I recognized a few from some of my other books.

I didn't give it only one star because some of the recipes to use the preserves looked like they had promise.

If you're looking for a good book on preserving small quantities, you'd be better off buying "The Complete Book of Small-Batch Preserving: Over 300 Recipes to Use Year-Round" by Ellie Topp & Margaret Howard.

3.0 étoiles sur 5 Okay patterns but the colour choices seem a bit dated, Jan. 30 2009
This book is okay. It all really depends on your taste, if you're debating about buying it.

I borrowed it from the local public library and only found one pattern I wanted to do. The images, the examples, and the patterns are all very clear. It's a well put together publication.

There's nothing particularly wrong with anything in the book, I just found the colour choices for the thread quite dated. If I didn't know that this was a brand new book I would have guessed it was published in the '90s.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 Beautiful book with lots of big projects, Jan. 30 2009
When I buy a book with cross stitch patterns, I want ones I can't get from magazines and this book delivers! The bigger the better!! So, I'm very happy with my purchase.

This is actually Barbara Hammet's second book of cross-stitch for art nouveau and it's quite different. I think the two books together would make for an excellent range of choices for the cross-stitcher. This one is different from her first in the history and background in techniques she describes for each artist of whom she is re-interpreting their work here.

There are several patterns here that I love, but I think the first one I'll tackle is Hammet's interpretation of "The Kiss" by Klimt.

4.0 étoiles sur 5 No pictures and the recipes are complex, but the food turns out very well, Jan. 30 2009
Every recipe I've tried so far from this book have turned out beautifully. Just delicious. The introductions to many of the recipes were also unique and refreshning, not something I would say about every cookbook out there.

I didn't give this book a 5 out of 5 because I didn't like how there weren't any pictures. The one on the cover is so tempting, I don't know why they didn't do more like that.

Also, I should warn you that the recipes are quite involved. Do not confuse this with a slow cooker cookbook.
