I won't write too much about this movie as no words can describe it. Just buy it and watch it. And then you'll want to watch more movies by Alexander Petrov.

One of the funniest movies from Down Under I've ever seen. It was really a pleasant surprise to discover something of this caliber made in Australia - don't get me wrong I don't mean that Aussies cannot make funny movies but this one is a real gem. Buy it and enjoy it over and over again.

What a joy it was to watch this movie! Emanuele Crialese is trying on the very, very big shoes left after the masters like Antonioni, Fellini and other patriarchs of the Italian cinema but finally we see someone who one day can make the Italian cinema feel proud again. Watch this movie and you'll never forget it.

3.0 étoiles sur 5 A nice try, Mr. Allen!, Dec 24 2006
This is one of Woody's movies of the period when he was so arrogant and cocky, not being afraid to hurt anyone's feelings: be it religion, ethnicity or culture. In this movie Woody (true to himself) takes somebody else's work ("War and Peace" in this case) and builds on it his own comedy. True, the result may come out not bad as in this movie, where he is not bad both with a physical comedy and clever (and funny) remarks. One remark though: since this movie follows The Sleeper you can clearly see that he and Diane just continue the same old path. I really doubt that Woody really read all of the War and Peace by Leo Tolstoy (maybe just saw one of the movies) and other works by Dostoyevsky, whom he extensively refers to in the prison scene with his father (Crime and Punishment - mentioning Rasskolnikov killing two ladies, Brothers Karamazov, Idiot, Gambler, etc.) - I'm afraid that these references were completely lost with the general audience (a good try, Mr. Allen!). I should also mention his surprisingly well made jokes regarding lawyers and the Socratic method (they teach us law with this method at law school) and logic. I don't know where he got this idea from and why he used it in his movie but I find it really funny. All in all the movie is not bad at all (not without flaws, of course). Again, when you watch this movie just remember what period Woody was in (pretty arrogant and should I say insensitive?) when he still made "funny movies" unlike his later works where he gets wiser and softer.

2.0 étoiles sur 5 Very Overrated Movie, Aug 20 2006
It's not a bad movie, but it's totally overrated. Two things surprise me about it: the first one is how Welles got a cart blanche to make the movie the way he wanted to and why on earth this movie is valued so high by AFI. I think that Ingmar Berman said everything about this movie: "For me he's just a hoax. It's empty. It's not interesting. It's dead. Citizen Kane, which I have a copy of- is all the critics' darling, always at the top of every poll taken, but I think it's a total bore. Above all, the performances are worthless. The amount of respect that movie's got is absolutely unbelievable."

There is humor, English humor and (apparently) Swedish humor (Bergman's humor to be more precise). It's true that compared with other Bergman's movies (where there is always someone, who is dying, already dead, thinking of death (or playing with death) or crippled) this one can be considered just hilarious. Just think of this period (circa 1955) when Fellini made already I Vitelloni (1953), La Strada (1954) and Il Bidone (1955) and then we have "Smiles" by Bergman. No wonder that Bergman himself was very much surprised by the success of his movie in Cannes. To cut a long story short, I just want to say that this movie is a very weak attempt at comedy with a very theatrical performance. The story line is pretty much predictable and weak. Just leave aside this almost universal admiration of Bergman and watch this movie again (if you can, of course) and don't forget what Bergman said in one of his last interviews that looking back he had to admit that his movies were rather depressing.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 Do Not Buy Korean DVDs!, Dec 23 2005
Ce commentaire est de: Beyond the Clouds (Widescreen) (DVD)
I love this movie - it's really not to everyone's taste (one should love european movies in the first place) and my comments are not about the movie itself (which I consider very good regardless of some well-deserved criticism) but korean copies, circulating around on the web and the one I bought. The dvd is not complete - there's no documentary (even though it's announced on the jacket) at all and what's even worse is that korean censors placed big black round spots on some body parts of ladies during the love-making scenes! This really looks ugly! In my opinion, it would be so much more honest of those korean censors not to sell this dvd in their country at all instead of mutilating the movie.
