5.0 étoiles sur 5 A great little book that's worth more than the ticket price, Mar 19 2004
This review is from: Chili Nation (Paperback)
I admit--I first got this book on a whim to top up an order for Super Saver Shipping. It's now one of my most reached-for cookbooks, and is almost falling apart from use! CAVEAT: Don't buy this book unless you have access to most of the various chilies--fresh, dried, and canned--in the book; using the listed ingredients really DOES make a difference. However, the Internet is a great resource for finding hard-to-find items, and dried chilies stay forever in a bag in the freezer. Also, the contents of an opened can can be frozen in a baggie...having said that, I have won more than one informal pot-luck prize with the gems in this book.

Not all chili has to be watery, or contain starch--many of the recipes are for what I call "Texas-style" recipes--all meat, no beans--which leaves you to choose your own side-dish to temper the heat. This book runs the gamut of recipes from ultra-mild to very hot, vegetarian to carnivore paradise. Almost every single recipe requires only one pot, and can easily be increased for a crowd. For solitary folks, nothing beats a batch of chilie--eat half over a few days and freeze the rest for a great meal when you're in a rush.

Get this one and have fun!

2.0 étoiles sur 5 Cute, but a real waste of money., Dec 7 2003
This review is from: What Not to Wear (Paperback)
This book reads like one long beauty magazine article. Lots of pretty pictures, but not a whole lot of content. Much of the advice given is either common-sense stuff that most people can figure out from other sources, OR very much fashion-driven and reliant upon current styles (the fact that everyone seems to own capris, yet the authors seem to hate them, is just one example). On top of it all, reading this really can make just about anyone feel "imperfect." While much of the advice is true, it does suffer from overkill a bit. More to the point, the book just isn't worth its sale price. If it was $5 or sold as a "special edition" of a beauty magazine I'd feel better about spending my money on it.

3.0 étoiles sur 5 Everything Changes Except The Avant-Garde, Sep 29 2003
This book in a few words: Everything changes except the avant-garde. Well-written but very navel-gazey and self-absorbed. "Hi, like, I smoked weed, did lots of drugs, had tons of sex with unsuitable people, and then, like, you know, I grew up, and like, got a job and got married, but like, you know, I'm STILL Hardcore Bohemian, man! I'm out there! I'm making a DIFFERENCE!"

Um, yeah.

mmmmmm...um....take this one out of the library, folks.

2.0 étoiles sur 5 Starts strong then peters out..., Dec 27 2002
I had high hopes for this book when I started reading it for my book club. It became silly and improbable very quickly, and then moved along to being predictable. This is not the "female Umberto Eco" that one reviewer claimed I'd be reading. Leave this one on the shelf.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 Something different for people who like different somethings, Mar 8 2002
This review is from: Halber Mensch (Audio CD)
I originally bought this album for the title track; now it's one of my favorite albums. Harsh and jarring yet poetic and meaningful...even more so if you understand the lyrics. This is not beautiful music for beautiful people; rather it's thinking music for thinking people. Industrial and grating...imagine if The Dead Kennedys and Philip Glass had joint custody of a hyperactive group of children.

4.0 étoiles sur 5 Great music for fans, but not for DM beginners., Mar 7 2002
This review is from: Music for the Masses (Audio CD)
As a longtime DM fan, I liked this album quite a lot--if I could give it 4.5 stars I would. I think my big problem with this album is that I own the cassette version, which has a ridiculously long remix side on the B side as filler. Best for those already familiar with the band's work. If you grew up in the 80's at all you probably know all the lyrics by heart anyway from the local radio station.

OH MY G-D....that's all I can say....a zillion great techno variations on 3 different songs, but it keeps you MOVING...great workout music or working music....you want this CD if you want any kind of action in your life...if you saw the movie you probably already have this; if not, go see the movie and then tell me how right I am.
