Highly recommended! A virtually flawless account of an adventure that could not have been written as fiction - no one would have believed it. As it is, it's hard to believe that they once made MEN like this, and that these men had such magnificent, albeit harrowing, adventures. Today, we measure ourselves by what new toothpaste slogans we come up with. What a world. Some minor criticisms -- where are the maps, charts, drawings, and photos? And the epilogue? This book cried out for one. But this is all minor when compared to Lansing's superlative achievement. Bravo!

Ruark excels at depicting action sequences. But this overly long book is populated by cardboard characters (easily interchangeable with those from "Uhuru") who engage in the most tedious conversations and introspections imaginable. Is this the worst book you'll ever read? Hardly. But it is a disappointment.

The cause of George Reeves' death is anything but clearcut. It is indeed possible -- very possible -- that he was murdered. And, as this book points out, the three likeliest suspects are Eddie Mannix, Toni Mannix, and Leonore Lemmon. There is no evidence, however (not even of the most circumstantial nature)against any of these individulas. Suspicions -- yes. Speculations -- yes. Evidence -- no. More accurately, if such evidence does in fact exist, it has not been unearthed by the authors of this superficial, pointless book, which reeks of laziness. Did they even try to track down Carol Von Ronkel? Is she untraceable? Is she dead (though she'd be only in her early to mid-60s)? And what was the story with Mrs. Daley? Where is she? What does she have to say? Were the authors hinting that she and Leonore Lemmon were having a lesbian affair? Is that why she was going to travel on the Reeves/Lemmon honeymoon? Maybe Mrs. Daley was a lesbian. After all, it was ! well known that her husband was homosexual. Was it a marriage of convenience for both parties? The questions go on and on. Just don't bother looking for the answers in this book.

L.A. Confidential

5.0 étoiles sur 5 The Ultimate Tough Guy Book, July 8 1998
Ce commentaire est de: L.A. Confidential (Paperback)
A vigorous, athletic, roaring romp through the brutal, ugly, crazy underside of 1950s Hollywood. Great writing makes for a great read, and L.A. CONFIDENTIAL is just such a read, though some of the scenes are gratuitously and excessively brutal (implausible, rather than stomach-churning). A warning to the reader: The book is a page-turner, but take your time, because it's also deeply involved and complex (the film won't prepare you for it). Miss a word, and a whole scene 50 pages later may come as a complete surprise. Enjoy!

2.0 étoiles sur 5 Sigh: So Emblematic Of Capote's Wasted Talent, July 1 1998
Ce commentaire est de: Answered Prayers (Paperback)
Although I've never considered Capote a great writer (or even capable of resembling one), he did write In Cold Blood, one of the finest non-fiction books of the 20th Century. In short, he had genuine talent, which he threw away with both hands (rather like Fitzgerald, though he certainly didn't have his genius). Answered Prayers is, to my mind, proof of this -- magnificently written in parts, but sloppy, disorganized and ultimately pointless. One questions the judgement and motivations in publishing this singularly unfinished piece.

Nuremberg Diary

3.0 étoiles sur 5 Good, But Should Have And Could Have Been Better, July 1 1998
Ce commentaire est de: Nuremberg Diary (Paperback)
Gilbert brings Goering and the other Nazis to three-dimensional life in this impressive and ambitious book. Ultimately, however, Nuremberg Diary doesn't live up to its promise. A key problem is that Gilbert can't resist intruding his (albeit understandable) moral indignation. After all, he was the prison psychologist, and one has to wonder how objective his appraisals were. In interpreting the results of the personality tests, did Gilbert do so as a trained psychologist or as an outraged layman? The book would have been superior, I think, if Gilbert had discussed at least some of the results of his psychological testing, while keeping his angry outbursts (however understandable and even laudable) more to himself.

3.0 étoiles sur 5 Subject Unworthy of the Approach, July 1 1998
Ce commentaire est de: Edie: American Girl (Paperback)
I love oral biographies (and highly recommend, by the way, SAVAGE GRACE and THE TRUE GEN), and EDIE certainly held my attention. But why? Because Edie Sedgwick was such an interesting personality? Hardly. She was a dime-a-dozen degenerate and, of course, a bore. The same is true of all her godawful cronies, including the insufferably peculiar and talentless Andy Warhol. Oral biographies, however -- regardless of the subject matter -- are always riveting. The approach reminds us that we all have memories worth remembering and stories worth telling.

3.0 étoiles sur 5 Very Pleasing, June 11 1998
LeFanu is one of the top-tier ghost-story writers. Although M.R. James reigns supreme over that particular domain, LeFanu is one of its princes (as is Oliver Onions, though I don't believe that the same can be said for the curiously overrated H.P. Lovecraft). This particular collection will be a joy to any and all enamored of classic ghost stories -- despite unmistakable redundancies and Lefanu's fondness for excessively oratund language.

LeFanu is one of the great ghost-story writers. Not as wonderful, to be sure, as the incomparable M.R.James, but in the same class as Oliver Onions and vastly superior to the curiously overrated H.P. Lovecraft. There are faults, of course. Among them are redundancy and an excessively Victorian style. He is, nevertheless, one of the greats.

This is a fascinating book, and Shute is particularly successful in building tension as the inevitable comes closer and closer -- i.e., the death of mankind. One proviso: I have far less faith in human nature than Shute does. Is it likely that people, knowing that their death is inevitable and near, will behave with the good sense and civility Shute depicts? I can't help but think that many would give way to complete excess, degeneracy and violence. It's ironic that Shute thinks man is capable of launching a nuclear holocaust, but will then behave with the utmost decorum when rules no longer apply and when all bets are off.
