I just can't believe that some people call this movie "porn" - GET A LIFE!!!
Though it sometimes has a low-budget feeling to it - probably because it is - this movie is heart-rending, and I'm usually not into this kind of thing.
A Scottish woman (Holly Hunter) stops speaking for no reason we ever get to know (nor where her precocious daughter [Anna Paquin] comes from), and is married off by her family to a New Zealand farmer (Sam Neill). After a tough journey she arrives in a strange land, and the only thing that matters to her besides her daughter is her piano, which allows her to express her feelings. But her woodheaded husband leaves it on the beach.
Their neighbour Baines, always suspicious for his good relations with the Maori and his tattoos, is fascinated by her, buys the piano off her master, and asks her for piano lessons.
While her husband plumply tries "to possess" her, Baines wants to touch her in exchange for parts of her piano. She acquiesces, and falls for this strange man who adores her.
The actors, the direction, the music are simply outstanding, and if The Piano hadn't been released in the same year as Schindler's List, it certainly would have gained more Oscars.
Just the end will have you discuss for ages - does she die dreaming or does she dream of dying?

5.0 étoiles sur 5 When is this a movie for you?, July 30 2003
If you
-like an original movie (taken from an Elmore Leonard novel),
-aren't bothered to follow a storyline slightly more complicated than a roadrunner chase,
-enjoyed Ocean's Eleven, its story and cool music,
-aren't paralyzed by ridiculous stereotypes (like "tv actors are bad" or "latin singers can't act"),
-like a romantic comedy that isn't sappy, but intriguing, funny, and has an unusual ending,
this might be the movie for you.

3.0 étoiles sur 5 Don't ever go to Rome with only this guide!, July 30 2003
Ce commentaire est de: Blue Guide To Rome (Paperback)
I just returned from a trip to Europe and spent several days in Rome...
So this guide gets great reviews... True, the historical and cultural sections are fine. They didn't include any colour photographs, o. k., might be their style.
But to sell a - not even cheap - guide that doesn't even have an underground map?! The maps in general aren't worth the paper they're printed on. You're certain to get lost in the city if you trust this guide.
If you want to bother bringing this guide along a "real" guide, be my guest, but I, for one, expect more of a city guide.

SimpleTech STI-CF/512 512MB CompactFlash Card
SimpleTech STI-CF/512 512MB CompactFlash Card

3.0 étoiles sur 5 Five stars or one?, June 22 2003
I bought this one to have sufficient memory for my new Minolta Dimage 7Hi. Stuck it in, took pictures, no sweat. The next day, the camera tells me it is "unable to read card". I've got other cards from Lexar, Viking and SanDisk, all work. Then again, I put the SimpleTech in my old Canon A40, and behold, it works like a charm. Re-formatted it on the Canon, to no avail. So, is it the card's or the camera's fault? On the SimpleTech site they boast their cards are designed to have "unlimited compatibility"...
I have to say I'm more than slightly miffed that this so-called industry standard is a frigging maze with us customers caught up in it shelling out the bucks and having all the hassle of first spending hours on the net trying to figure out compatibility and then sending the products back...

El Sueno de la Historia
El Sueno de la Historia

4.0 étoiles sur 5 Another hit from a Chilean star, April 9 2003
Ce commentaire est de: El Sueno de la Historia (Paperback)
Jorge Edwards is a renowned Chilean author. In this book - for which he was awarded the Cervantes Prize, the most important prize of Spain - he combines the still virulent story of a returning exilee with the life of Joaquín Toesca, the Italian-turned-Chilean who constructed half Santiago's centre, including the Cathedral.
This book tells us about the aftermaths of a dictatorship and the different paths people take afterwards. It is well written. But it also needs a certain understanding of Chilean history to be fully appreciated.
Then again, this is simply good literature. Enjoy.

When We Were Orphans: A Novel
When We Were Orphans: A Novel
by Kazuo Ishiguro
Edition: Paperback

3.0 étoiles sur 5 In a hurry?, Feb. 15 2002
Having read Remains and Artist (though the last one didn't exactly blow me away), I was curious about this one; the storyline sounded rather interesting. But for all of Mr Ishiguro's mastery of English (makes one think of Joseph Conrad) he simply doesn't pull this one off. So his Christopher Banks seems to be a couple of cans short of a six-pack, still his delusions have to face up to reality. Why do the other characters play along (believing his parents to be trapped in the same house for 18 years, or his pompous allusions about defusing the global crisis in the thirties that are never taken up)? For all the original idea, never comes even close to Remains - so read that one.

3.0 étoiles sur 5 A good idea doesn't make a great book, folks, Feb. 15 2002
C'mon guys - get serious. This book reads pretty much like what it is: an acceptable attempt of someone just out of writing class. The idea is good, I'll grant that, but then the execution doesn't convince, and the language is sometimes outright pathetic. The ridiculous similes in the first part ("His eyes came to rest on me like a butterfly on a flower", p. 42) made me want to dump the book right away. Glad I didn't do it though - had some nice moments later on, even though it only adds up to three stars.
