1.0 étoiles sur 5 Prevent Hateful books like this, not homosexuality, July 8 2004
This book is the best example of the veiled abuse and negativity toward gay and lesbian children! First, the authors skirt the American Psychological Association's stand that "trying to change one's orientation can lead to a lifetime of depression". So they chose to go the "prevention" route.
In reading this book, the abuse toward these children is profound calling them children with "low gender esteem" for not being the right types of males and females. The sexism of this type of statement is outrageous especially as if anything but a traditional male or female is adequate. Gender abuse, attacking one's maleness or femaleness, is widely known today as part of covert sexual abuse which is what this book is; a book on how to covertly sexually abuse and shame your child.
These authors have gotten wise to the criticism of their approach and so have disguised it by softening their terminology, as in telling parents to correct children but not shame them for playing with opposite-gender toys. If your son plays with a doll, they advise to take it away. Playing with dolls in childhood makes little girls and boys good parents as they practice parenting skills. It does not make a child gay. What they advise in the book is still very shaming to the child.
The only good thing they advise is for fathers to get more involved. I couldn't agree more: Fathers have abandoned their sons, gay and straight alike, causing much of the anxiety and depression in men today. More involved fathers can help their sons become more mature men, but not make them straight or gay.
This book is a recipe to making a gay or lesbian child a depressed and suicidal teen and adult. It is an illustration of what is really wrong. It is not the gay and lesbian child, it is the assaults on gay and lesbian children.

This would be a great book if it eliminated the negativity about gayness and lesbianism. There is nothing wrong with an individual who is homosexual and decides not to live their life in an affirmative gay or lesbian way. However, the author makes global and generalized negative and patronizing judgments about gays and lesbians saying there is "nothing affirmative" about it. That is his judgment only. The truth is that millions of openly gay men and lesbians are leading out and proud lives in successful relationships and healthy self-esteem about their gender, sexuality and overall psychology. The author, and those doing the type of work, should stick to only those individuals who are of homosexual orientation and do not want to live as gays and lesbians. Leave those who are of homosexual orientation and DO want to be out of this work. This does not apply to them.
There is nothing wrong with an individual who decides not to "live" outwardly their inner orientation. They deserve a chance at living heterosexually if that is what they want. But to say that "all" of those with a homosexual orientation "should" not fulfill it is about hate, not about hope.
Most appalling is Dr. Laura Schlessinger's forward written during the same time she was denying her negativity about gays and lesbians in her attempts to keep her talk show on television. This book lacks integrity from the beginning.

As a gay man I have learned a great deal from the Fab 5. This book along with their show has helped me understand how to live better with grooming and fashion. This book is a book for all men, and all people in general! Great to have the Fab 5 around.

Why You Should Give A Damn About Gay Marriage

With the many current judgments, opinions and feelings swirling around the topic of gay marriage, the facts get lost. Kotulski's witty, engaging, informative book is easy to read and up to date. One thing Kotulski reflects on that resonated for me was her comment about us calling our partner "boyfriend" or "girlfriend." ... She adds that because we are left out of the "adult fraternity" called marriage, we're unfairly denied the adult responsibilities that marriage would give us. ...
For far too long, we Lesbians and Gays have been told about our lives by heterosexists reflecting on our lives according to the way they feel subjectively, not on what the data, statistics, and accurate research can tell about our culture. Davina Kotulski's book is another tool to help bring the truth into the light and break down decades of false judgments based on fear.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 EX-cellent!!, Nov. 17 2003
I have read hundreds of articles and books on reparative therapy and ex-gay movements. Many are written so academically that I cannot get through it. Or it is written through the words of Christianity that they lose me being the Jewish man that I am. This is the first book I have ever read that was engaging and kept my interest. The author is smart, well-researched and funny. He absolutely exposes the ridiculousness of the Reparative therapies and ex-gay movements. BRAVO!!!

5.0 étoiles sur 5 A people oriented relationship model for Gays and Straights, April 12 2003
Dr. Hendrix demonstrates a model that is for anyone in romantic relationship with one another, whether gay, lesbian or heterosexual. While the examples are all heterosexual, this book can be easily adapted to gay and lesbian couples. I found this book to be one of the few out there about relationships that was not geared toward men and women in relationship with one another in terms of how men relate to women and vice versa.
It is about communication between two people in relationship and the mystery of why we are drawn to familiar love. It is not gender based. I applied much of the IMAGO principles to gay men in my book, Ten Smart Things Gay Men Can Do To Improve Their Lives" published by Alyson Books. I highly recommmend this book to all gay and lesbian couples including heterosexuals.
