4.0 étoiles sur 5 Bourne to Run, Jason, Run, Sept. 22 2003
Bourne Identity is a pop-corn movie! In its own slick psychopathic way, it is a validation of the free- thinking individual. Matthew Damon surprised me with a characterization that made me believe he was old enough to be an accomplished and programmed CIA agent. Chris Cooper as his boss made my skin crawl. Franka Potente is marvelous as the femme vitale. From JasonÕs awakening at sea, to Zurich and through Paris, you will need a big bucket of popcorn because the suspense will make you chew faster. You could also accompany this thriller with Potente in Run, Lola, Run, the swashbuckling adventure Horseman on the Roof (LÕHussar sur la toit) and The Spy Who Came in From the Cold. If you can find a copy of the BBC series SmileyÕs People (VHS), that would also be fun.

4.0 étoiles sur 5 Husbands, Rare Book Dealers & Blouse Men - Choices! Choices!, Sept. 16 2003
This review is from: A Walk on the Moon (DVD)
Unfaithful was okay for a melodrama but a tad too idealized for my blood. Its hook at keeping me interested was Olivier MartinezÕs raw sexiness. Walk on the MoonÕs story is so much more interesting, erotic and poetic in obvious as well as subtle ways. 1st, Viggo Mortenson is a worthy temptation to stir the waters of doubt. The writers and actors present more conflict articulating a marriage at crossroads of changing times and a couple that married too young. There are also more interesting subplots. The husband (wearing toy cowboy attire or trying to dance to Jimi Hendrix), mother-in-law (strong and loving) and kids all add more interesting dimensions to the infidelity Diane Lane brings to the screen. She is not all selfish addiction and has more rounded reasons for seeking really rockinÕ bons temps with the blouse man. This added more suspense and satisfaction at the end. As enticing as ViggoÕs eyes and voice are, the soundtrack is rich and offers a pleasantly and sensually surprising selection of songs. I can pick which movie I prefer, but don't make me choose between Walker Jerome and Paul Martel. It just ain't fair.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 Zacharias Kunuk & co. Had to REALLY Want to Make This Movie!, Sept. 14 2003
Watching Fast Runner, I felt like a quiet member of the Inuit family sitting around a fire hearing this story and my imagination saw this film. This is masterful storytelling. The end credits document how much the filmmakers (actors and production people) wanted to bring this story to us in a medium we could understand. I was very cynical about my ability to like a movie this long in such a language. After 3 hours, I felt at home, covered in seal skins and my belly full of seal meat. My curiosity about what I didnÕt grasp has me researching this film and story. It is not for everybody, but, for the movie viewer who loves to seek truth from every culture and find another link in that human experience, 3 hours will almost seem too short. I donÕt know how well I would survive that north in Canada, but I have a vague idea how to survive because of this film. I will never complain about rolling blackouts again. What a hard life even if it has access to more modern amenities! To everyone involved in Fast Runner, THANK YOU!!!

3.0 étoiles sur 5 Why Can't My Booksellers Be Like Paul Martel?, Sept. 1 2003
This review is from: Unfaithful (Widescreen) (DVD)
The eroticism of Unfaithful is the heart muscle pumping life through this movie. And what a muscle? Olivier Martinez is like a French Brando in his punkish animal seduction and compromising women. Diane Lane really plays her part well, presenting a mature understanding of "doing naughty." On one hand, I wanted to ring her neck but on the other could not blame her. Richard Gere was good, but my problem with the movie circled about this ideal husband and life. I keep going between 3 and 4 stars trying to figure out if it is subtly original in spite of the typical story about a wife straying from hubby or if it is stereotypical in spite of its subtlety. Definitely buy it, but consider partnering it with Spike Lee's 25th Hour for an interesting comparison of endings and lure of New York . The photography and set design are almost as guilty as Paul Martel for shamelessly seducing us with this entertaining melodrama. Will I be able to watch this movie once, or will I have to drive my car over barricades for one last taste.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 Love Letter to New York City, Aug. 24 2003
This review is from: 25th Hour (DVD)
"25th Hour" is a beautiful, complicated, emotional, sometimes scary love letter to a post 9/11 New York City. I have liked Spike Lee's other films with a few reservations but am grateful that he likes to make us think. This movie takes his direction to another more sophisticated league entirely. It is seamless and supported by memorable performances by a great cast. I waited for the right emotional moment to watch this. It is a wonderful and powerful movie that validates not selling yourself short or taking a vibrant and diverse home like the Big Apple for granted.

2.0 étoiles sur 5 Curious Mix: Some Good Acting & Lousy Script, Aug. 12 2003
This review is from: Womans Guide to Adultery (DVD)
This movie verged on a 3-star rating just because I really liked 75% of the acting. The script and story have little muscle and barely outline motivations that are supposed to be subtle. The script nudges the action with stereotypes. The story is dated by its emerging feminism that might not be so obvious on that side of the planet now. I watched the whole thing because some of the actors presented interesting characters - they brought presence to the movie in a way I don't think an American actor and director could have done. (Isn't the U.K one big chamber ensemble anyway?) Amanda Donohoe, Sean Bean (a current favorite of mine these days), and Adrian Dunbar pulled my interest along while I did chores and had nothing else to watch. Theresa Russell is a problem. She is pretty, [physically attractive], spunky and had no chemistry with the other actors on screen. In a profession where work is so sparsely available, I am grateful that the producers hired these talented people to keep the paychecks coming to tide them over for a better script and production. The photography is well done.

This review is from: Withnail & I (Widescreen) (DVD)
Someone suggested this movie that I might normally would not have chosen. It took a few scenes before I warmed up to it. This is a very funny and grimy movie. If you are as squeamish as I am, it can make your skin crawl, but it compensates with some very good acting and a creative script that must have been adapted from a play. If you need cheering up and you are the perky sort, this might not be the pick-me-up you need, but it can be a hoot. Richard E. Grant always challenges my disbelief. He has that angelic face that can really take you for a ride. Paul McGann is good as well as the other character actors. It is not a favorite movie, but I highly recommend it if you have not seen it already.

3.0 étoiles sur 5 "Amelie" meets "The Third Man" in the Mind of an 19-year-old, June 17 2003
This is a good movie worth a watch and adding to your library. It is a curious mixture of being sophisticated, trying to be sophisticated, & trying too hard to be sophisticated to downright pretentious. It is dream-like and poetic at all those levels. It is also charming, sexy and beautiful. There are unexpected giggles. It is like the writer of the script, shadowed on film as "Alex"(Denis Lavant), wrote this draft when he was 18 and this group of very interesting and talented actors thought it would be fun to make his dream happen. It is definitely a showcase to indulge the youthful energy and talent of Lavant. It would not make my desert island 100, but I would not mind seeing it and would pay matinee price to see this in a theater with the right audience

5.0 étoiles sur 5 POPPIES! Poppies!, June 12 2001
This review is from: Traffik: 2pc Box Set - DVD (DVD)
Traffik is intense, dramatic and depicts the world (from Asia to the U.K.) of the heroine trade. All the hype behind the movie barely alluded to this brilliant miniseries. With this rerelease, let's hope that the record is set right. Buy it, or rent it. I am sure the movie is great, but the Brits really captured the characters and sense of place to propel the compelling stories of poppy farmers, traders, dealers, users and cops --and everyone else involved in the heroine business.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 Everbody got that broken feeling..., Jan. 1 2001
You have to ask yourself: what is Exotica hiding? It is a modern passion play trying to work the story of Francis, Thomas, Christina and Eric past the memory of a tragedy. Nothing is as it appears. With a great script, a very effective ensemble of actors like Mia Kirshner, Bruce Greenwood, Elias Koteas and Don McKellar who play the range from carefree and younger to older and cynical, Atom Egoyam creates a quirky, dark, almost raging universe that defies any usual sense of reality. Through a serpentine dance to a fascinating soundtrack, the story suspends your disbelief right where the customers can see you. Then it touches you on the belly and brings the story out to the rest of us having to explain itself.
This is my favorite of EgoyamÕs films, but definitely check out The Sweet Hereafter. Also if you arenÕt squeamish like me, or maybe if you are squeamish but willing to give an interesting film a try, watch The Adjuster. (I will never watch it again, but it is really interesting.) In both these movies, He uses almost the same actors but in completely different characters.
