4.0 étoiles sur 5 STINGRAY [the forgotten Cocker classic], Nov. 1 2000
This review is from: Stingray (Audio CD)
Stingray was the last album Joe Cocker ever released for A&M Records in April of 1976. This much overlooked album[which A&M failed to promote adequately]ranks as a favorite among his musical peers. Joe turns in some unbelievable vocal performances on such tunes as "The Jealous Kind", "A Song For You", "She is My Lady" and "The Worrier"[which Features Eric Clapton on guitar]. The soulful rhythm section is anchored by Joe's then backup band Stuff with lead guitarist Eric Gale providing flawless guitar solo's throughout. Great backup vocals are provided by Patti Austin, Deniece Williams and Bonnie Bramlet. The late Peter Tosh makes a cameo as well on the Dylan tune "The Man in Me". If you like Joe Cocker this is a must have import[never released domestically]which is very reasonably priced. It's been said by a prior review of this album many years ago by James Chrispell"Stingray is full of gems worth seeking out".

The group Stuff was a team of New York's finest session musicians: Richard Tee,Gordon Edwards,Steve Gadd,Eric Gale,Cornell Dupree and Chris Parker. During the 1970's and 1980's their backing credits read like a who's who of popular music. They can be heard backing all the elite artists of that time period such as Aretha Franklin,Joe Cocker,Paul Simon,George Benson,Grover Washington JR,Ray Charles,Van McCoy and many more. All fans of jazz/rock fusion should own this blistering cd which documents master session artists at their best. Just listening to the tracks like "Foots","Love the stuff",and"Signed sealed and delivered" are enough to make any listener feel like they were just zapped into overdrive! The drum and piano solo's by Steve Gadd and the Late Richard Tee are flawless and unmatched by any one in popular music to this day. The guitar playing of Cornell Dupree and the late great Eric Gale is the jazz equivalent of the rock combination of Duane Allman and Eric Clapton. Buy this cd today if you really appreciate cream of the crop musicianship and feel good music.
