5.0 étoiles sur 5 Look Into My Eyes..., July 18 2004
This review is from: Svengali (DVD)
At first glance, SVENGALI (John Barrymore) is just a slimy, heartless music instructor, taking advantage of the folly of his female students (victims). On closer inspection, he is a demonic presence, mesmerizing those he desires with those hideous eyes of his! Trilby (Marian Marsh) is a beautiful young model, who captivates SVENGALI and drives him to obsession. He simply must possess her and sets out to do so by hypnotizing her (in the guise of a headache cure). The various shots of SVENGALI's eyes are unforgettable. In them we see an evil that is otherwise hidden deep in SVENGALI's heart. While others think of him as a harmless buffoon, we know what he REALLY is, as well as what he's really capable of. Trilby is drawn into those eyes, becoming his slave. Though she becomes a singing sensation, we realize that she is only a puppet for her new master, a caged bird chirping for her captor. Her life is reduced to SVENGALI. This is a horror story about domination, submission, and death. Eerie and disturbing, SVENGALI is a must-see classic. Highly recommended...

Bruce Campbell returns as Ash, the sole survivor of the first EVIL DEAD demon fest. This time out, he must battle the evil spirit in himself! Sam Raimi pulls out all the bloody stops to unleash a tale of possession gone mad! Campbell's solo performance during the first part of the film is a total trip! He is chased, flattened, thrown, carried through the air, and indwelt by that accursed horror from the blood-inked pages of the Book Of The Dead! This movie is either hilariously scary, or Terrifyingly hysterical. A perfect follow up to it's more serious predecessor. Would make an excellent triple feature with DEAD ALIVE and RE-ANIMATOR. Highly recommended...

This review is from: Bucket of Blood (DVD)
Poor Walter Paisley (Dick Mlller). No one notices him in his dead-end job as busboy at The Yellow Door coffeehouse. Day after day he watches and listens as beat poets and musicians get all the attention and accolades. Then, one day, Walter accidentally kills his landlady's cat, covers it in clay, and -presto!- a new artistic master is born! Soon, the beatniks are at Walter's feet, begging for further expressions of his genius. Walter knocks a cop (Bert Convy) in the noggin with a skillet, turns him into a statue, and has another masterwork to show off! Unfortunately, this begins taking a toll on Walter's mind, turning him into just another pseudo-intellectual, elitist snob like the ones he'd once envied. Of course, Walter is also a serial killer, using his victims as the guts of his "art". BUCKET OF BLOOD is a hysterical look at the beat generation. It lampoons just about every type of beatnik pomposity. Roger Corman's sense of humor shines through every scene! This would be a perfect double bill with LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS or THE BLOODY BROOD. Highly recommended...

5.0 étoiles sur 5 Bela And Company Are Back!, July 13 2004
Finally, DRACULA is put into a serious collection! Here we have not only the original classic DRACULA (w/ the incomparable Bela Lugosi), but four more toothy vampire thrillers! DRACULA concerns the Transylvanian Count and his trip to his new digs, where he quickly takes a big bite out of his neighbors. Can Von Helsing stop this evil undead plague, or will Dracula win the night? DRACULA- THE SPANISH VERSION was filmed simultaniously with Bela's feature. It is quite good on it's own merit, with actors that took pride in their work. Some things are different in nuance as well as some actual (subtle) changes to the props, dialogue, action, etc. It's fun to watch! DRACULA'S DAUGHTER is about a woman who seeks the aid of a psychiatrist in dealing with her vampirism. Can a supernatural curse be broken by scientific / psychological means? Hmmm. SON OF DRACULA has Lon Chaney jr. as the returning nosferatu. Posing as Count Alucard, he terrorizes the countryside! HOUSE OF DRACULA has Lon jr. back as the wolfman, looking for a cure for his canine affliction. John Carradine is along for the ride as Count Dracula (w/ a snappy moustache). Frankenstein's monster doesn't get much screen time, just sort of lumbering around aimlessly. Not a bad monster bash though! This collection is superb and should be bought before Universal re-seals their rusty old vaults once more...

Steve and Terri Irwin get caught up in an international incident after a croc' there trying to save eats a renegade satellite. Bungling agents are dispatched to retrieve the object, and are taught a good ol' fashioned Steve-O lesson in the process! A gun-totin' lady cattlerancher and her pack of vicious dogs add even more fun to the mix! Humorous and educational, with enough action to keep things hoppin' like a kangaroo in a briar patch! Great sequences with Steve 'n' Terri doing what they do best make this an all around great family croc-hunter fiesta! Highly recommended...

5.0 étoiles sur 5 Bluto Lives!, July 11 2004
ANIMAL HOUSE is one of the funniest, most subversive comedies ever made! It takes the college system apart, turning it into a playground for the outcasts on campus. Dean Wormer (John Vernon) has had just about enough of these delinquents. Delta Tau Chi is the worst frat in Faber College history, infamous for it's debauchery and total lack of respect for the traditions of the fraternity system. Delta house is more funhouse than fraternity house. It's members are a band of sex-obsessed alcoholics (hmmm, actually sounds pretty normal to me) with a knack for causing mayhem. Peter Riegert is "Boon" and Karen Allen is his girlfriend, Katy, who is just about fed up with the whole immature mess. Tim Matheson is "Otter", the Don Juan-type, set only on finding and fulfilling every woman's fantasy.... well, something like that. John Belushi is brilliant as "Bluto" Blutarski, a drunken lunatic with a heart of gold. His near silent performance steals every scene in a Chaplin / Keaton-esque way. This movie is the best thing the NATIONAL LAMPOON (the most irreverent, politically incorrect, spot-on hilarious humor magazine ever conceived) ever did. Written by Chris Miller, ANIMAL HOUSE is VERY loosely based on his own experiences at Dartmouth. He even has a small part as "HARDBAR". Doug Kenney (A national lampoon founding father) is "STORK", the guy who leads the Faber marching band astray in the legendary parade scene. If you like toga parties (aka: orgies), road trips, food fights, and anything else it takes to get through an otherwise dull existence, then ANIMAL HOUSE is for you! This movie was the first of it's kind, unfortunately giving birth to a stream of immitators and lesser phlegms.. er, films, like Porky's, Revenge Of The Nerds, etc. None have come remotely close to this masterpiece of hijinx gone terribly wrong! Highly recommended...

This review is from: Sylvester Stallone in Oscar (DVD)
I watched this movie 10 years ago expecting a dopey gangster parody with Sylvester "Rocky / Rambo" Stallone in a suit. What I got instead was a very funny, refreshing comedy with lots of great gags and interesting characters. Stallone is hilarious as "Snaps" Provolone, big time gangster and future banker (due to a deathbed promise to his dying father, played by Kirk Douglas). His mob (including Peter Reigert and Chazz Palminteri) are far more inept than intimidating, bumbling along with their boss in his attempt to go straight. You'll never forget the crazy bunch in OSCAR! Merissa Tomei is perfect as Snaps' daughter Lisa, the squeaky, flapper-girl wannabe. Tim Curry plays his best role since Frank N. Furter as linguistics instructor, Thornton Pool. Then there's Kurtwood Smith as the over-zealous cop, Toomey. A riot! I've seen OSCAR at least a dozen times and it still cracks me up! Deserves to be a classic...

Yes, the good doctor (Vincent Price) has risen again, just as diabolical, just as obsessed with his beautiful, dead wife Victoria. He is now trying to get her to Egypt, where he plans on taking her down the secret "river of life" for her complete resurrection! Accompanied by the ever silent Vulnavia (Valli Kemp), Phibes must compete with archeologist / eternal-life seeker Beiderbeck (Robert "Count Yorga" Quarry) in a race to the land of the pharaohs for the expected murder-fest, and ultimate showdown. Lots of laughs and killings-a-plenty in this near perfect Phibes phollow up! Highly recommended...

5.0 étoiles sur 5 The Hairy Guy Gets His Due..., July 7 2004
Another great collection from Universal! This time, it's the Wolf Man who gets the star treatment. In the original WOLF MAN, Lon Chaney jr. is Lawrence Talbott, son of sir Jonathon Talbott (Claude Raines). Larry gets bitten by a werewolf (Bela Lugosi) and starts the whole full-moon-rampage-thing. A classic. Next up is FRANKENSTEIN MEETS THE WOLF MAN. Lon jr. returns as lycanthropic Larry Talbott, trying to find a way to be destroyed, thus ending his torment. Ends in the legendary battle between the Wolf Man and Frankenstein's monster! Third, we have SHE WOLF OF LONDON, starring June Lockhart as a woman who is either a murderous beast, or is being framed in a hideous plot to drive her insane. Lockhart is great, showing a charm and innocense that make SWOL more than just another gothic mystery. Lastly, we get WEREWOLF OF LONDON, about a botonist attacked by a werewolf while attempting bring a rare tibeten flower back to London. This flower only blooms at night, during the full moon, and can keep a man from tansforming into a werewolf. This should help our hero, but alas, the werewolf who bit him is now in London too, seeking to have the flower for himself! Not a bad entry in the wolftale anthology. Buy this now, before Universal gets stingy again! Highly recommended...

Look, don't read this, just buy this thing before Universal realizes what they've done! They've opened their rusty old vault doors and let their most prized creations escape into open air! FRANKENSTEIN (dir.James Whale, w/ Colin Clive, Mae Clarke, Boris Karloff, Dwight Frye) is loose! His BRIDE (dir. James Whale again! w/ Colin Clive, Elsa Lanchester, Boris Karloff, Dwight Frye) too! Their hideous SON (Boris Karloff, Bela Lugosi, Basil Rathbone, Lionel Atwill) is also rampaging! If that's not enough, the GHOST OF FRANKENSTEIN (Lon Chaney jr., Bela Lugosi, Lionel Atwill, Sir Cedric Hardwicke) now walks among us as well! Yes, this collection has them all, and tosses in the HOUSE OF FRANKENSTEIN (Boris Karloff, Lon Chaney jr., John Carradine, George Zucco, Lionel Atwill) that long overgrown piece of wretched real estate! Hurry, before Universal slams those creaky doors shut once more! If you're a horror nut like yours truly, then this is a nightmare come true! Highest recommendation...
