5.0 étoiles sur 5 A must read for any Canadian interested in history and war., Dec 6 2008
This book is Volume Two of a 2 volume set.

90 years ago over 600,000 young Canadian soldiers went to Europe to fight the Germans.

Canadians not only fought, they were the best of the best.

The Germans came to know they were in for battle, any time the Canadians entered the line.

This volume describes the last two years of the war where the Canadians never lost a battle.

They were named "the shock troops of the Empire" by no less than Prime Minister David Lloyd George of the U.K.

This book is the real "must read" Canadian non fiction book this month.

If your book buying means are limited, forget the Mulroney and Chretien books, and buy this one instead.

This book will make you weep, want to hug every Canadian you see in uniform, their families and the author too.

To think that someone sat on these tapes all this time.

This set made the hair on the back of my head stand up and misted my eyes too.

In the era that this concert occurred there were some pretty bad concerts with terrible sound.

This set should have been available years ago.

It is one of the finest live recordings by any performer, that I have ever seen or heard.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 Interesting day by day peek into the Oval Office of Ronald Reagan., Oct 22 2007
This review is from: The Reagan Diaries (Hardcover)
I wasn't particularly a fan of President Reagan at the time, but I received the book as a gift, and have just finished it.

According to Douglas Brinkley, the historian that Nancy Reagan gave the handwritten diaries to compile, very few Presidents diligently kept diaries.

These are the daily thoughts of Ronald Reagan as written on the actual days of his eventful Presidency.

All the world leaders of the era, his family, his horses, his cabinet, his relations with press and congress are written about.

You'd hardly think it possible... for an author to write a single volume history of a long and terrible war, give mention to all fronts, in a readable and interesting fashion.

I bought it, read it, enjoyed it, and find it a terrific quick reference guide.

I ran into the author a year ago, and he may write a followup.

Everything you ever wanted to know about political patronage in Canada and each province, up to, and including the Mulroney era.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 I absolutely loved this set!, Mar 2 2007
This review is from: Concert For George (2DVD) (DVD)
He might be the Beatle we least knew, but judging from the wonderful efforts the friends that knew him, deeply loved him, judging from the efforts they made for this concert held one year to the day George died.

I tend to buy music dvds and watch once or twice, but I've played this one almost one dozen times.

One does not even have to have been any kind of Beatles fan to like this set, judging by the people I've played all or part of it for.

The music is great, the lineup amazing, and I find the entire effort to be tremendously uplifting.

Chantal Hebert Page 208: "Quebec is not the geographical equivalent of the other side of a cereal box, a French-language translation of the rest of Canada. Understanding what makes it tick requires more than learning the rudiments of its primary language."

I'm a unilingual person, have lived my entire life on the prairies. I've always been very interested in Canadian politics and history, and when I saw that Chantal Hebert had a book (her first) coming out, I pre ordered it months ago. I do want to understand what makes Quebec tick.

This book is much more than Stephen's Harper's recent (and unexpected) breakthrough in Quebec. Ever wonder why the NDP has only won one seat ever in QC? What got the Liberals in trouble in QC in the first place? Those answers, other answers, plus more new and timely questions and answers are in this book.

Chantal Hebert is a must read columnists in this home, her appearances and commentary on CBC's "At Issue" panel always perk my ears, and teaches me something everytime.

There are 267 highly interesting pages covering a decade plus of politicians, political parties, and events, and anyone who cares to understand Canada and Quebec better, should certainly pick up a copy of this book.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 A splendid tale., Feb 17 2007
This review is from: House Divided (Paperback)
To anyone interested in the US Civil War this is one novel that you really should read. The author was related to CSA General Longstreet and the story follows him and particularly the lives of a Virginia family that finds midway through the war that the deceased patriarch of their family fathered a child out of wedlock, whose daughter turns out to Abe Lincoln's mother.

Landowners in several states, the family members are well placed to have coverage of much of the eastern battles and events of the Civil War.

The book is long, over 1500 pages, and tough to put down to get sleep.
