5.0 étoiles sur 5 Essential French New Wave, May 19 2003
When Criterion decided to release this Antoine Doinel set, I was ecstatic. Truffaut, being my favorite French New Wave director, displays his marvelous talent in these movies. Most film buffs know The 400 Blows well. It is at this point where the adventure begins. This major film displays, honestly, what most of us felt as young teenagers. I don't think I have to go into this one much more. The 400 Blows is remarkable effort for a first feature film. It didn't use studios and Truffaut decided to simply take the camera outside on the streets.

Antoine & Collette is one of the favorite in the series. It is a short from the bigger work, Love at Twenty. Antoine has his first love and it is absolutely charming in its execution.

Stolen Kisses happens to be my favorite feature-length film of the group. It is so brutally honest and true to human emotions that we empasize for Antoine greatly. We go through all the trials of a young man, trying to get through life. He can't find the right job and is unsure about love. This whitty and funny film is one I'll be revisiting the most.

Bed and Board did not hit the high chord of the others. It was nonetheless entertaining and worth my while. Antoine gets a mistress and we deal with the troubles of that through his marriage.

Love On the Run is the flop of the group, told through mostly a series of flashbacks to the other movies. I really didn't enjoy it that much and found it boring. Basically what this film captured though, was a conclusion to the story. It wrapped up some of the ends, which I'm not sure needed to be.

The DVD package altogether is a very great deal. All the movies are excellent, with the exception of maybe Love on the Run. The transfers are also superb. If you found this set on here, you probably deserve to purchase it. All the films are funny, whitty, and deal with the troubles of youth, with someone who doesn't really want to grow up. There are also some very nice extras including a immensely charming early short that would somewhat inspire Truffaut to make The 400 Blows. I would recommend a purchase of this if you can afford it. These are some of the best films to come out of the French New Wave, made by someone who is incredibly passionate about his work.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 a wonderful fantasy, April 12 2003
This was one of the most enjoyable movies I've ever seen. After seeing some other Jeunet, like Alien Ressurection, I was not expecting something so well-executed. I loved everything about this film! From the opening, we begin to enter the fantasy world of Amelie. The photography is incredible and surrealistic. It sets a nice mood for the film. There's nothing too original about this film (French New Wave is an obvious influence), but it melds a bundle of different ideas into a perfect mixture. I really recommend this to everyone. This is in no way a chick flick! Sure, there's not a lot of action, but it sure is fun!

There is no reason you should be debating to buy this set if you found your way here. I actually had not seen the trilogy until I purchased this. The triology tries to take a story on each of the 3 colors of france, and in my opinion, Kieslowski sure was successful!

Blue, the first film, tells the story of a woman who loses her husband and tries to isolate herself from society. Blue was a "wowing" film if I ever saw one. After the first viewing it immediately went to my top 10 list. Juliette Binoche's is one of the best I've EVER seen...it made me hurt. The only better performance I've seen is in Dreyer's the Passion of Joan of Arc. This was such a deeply moving movie and I view it as the best of the trilogy.

The second film, White, is about a couple who are breaking up, but the man still deeply loves his wife. With all the hurt she has caused him, he seeks vengeance. This film is a semi-black comedy and didn't appeal to me all the much, but it was very, very much better than average and I enjoyed it thoroughly

Red, the final film, is about a woman who becomes enthralled by her stalker neighbor. This is my 2nd favorite film of the trilogy. The story brought the 3 (basically) unrelated films together to a nice conclusion.

These are 3 wonderful films, with excellent transfers and some nifty features. Kieslowski has really done a fine job of analyzing and examinating humans and our ways. These films sum up what life is about. It's hard for words to describe the genius of these films. I would buy the trilogy again if it cost 3x what it goes for on amazon. Buy it now!

Criterion has made one of their best dvd's yet. On disc one, there is an amazing adaptation by Robert Siodmak. This for me is the highlight of the set. There is fine acting, directing, and photography. It has noir written all over it. (In fact, after seeing this dvd, I think it is my favorite noir.) The 1946 The Killers is quite interesting in the way it expands on Hemingway's short story. Also on disc one is a short film by Andrei Tarkovsky! While this is interesting to watch and incredibly well done for a student film, there isn't that much substance. It's basically a word for word adaptation.

In my mind, the lesser of the two films is on the second disc. This is not to say it's not enjoyable. Don Siegel's takes a completely different twist on Hemingway's story. Initially this movie was not even to be called The Killers, because it didn't have much in common with the prior film or the short story. The highlight of this adaptation is Ronald Reagan in his role as a criminal. heh!

Overall this is an excellent set PACKED with features. The image quality is absolutely AMAZING on both discs (one of criterion's best efforts). I especially love the Seigel transfer. It has wonderful film grain sharpness. Lovers of noir should definately get this set. 1 great and 1 good film plus tons of extras = a must buy!

5.0 étoiles sur 5 a classic, April 28 2002
This review is from: Go (Audio CD)
Dextor Gordon and company really have it together on this album. Sonny Clark lays some nice notes on the keys. Butch Warren and Billy Higgins form a rock solid bass and drum foundation. This album definately has a great "feel" to it. Dextor Gordon's sax just flows with wonderful ease. These musicians had it together on this date and it shows. Go is a classic 60's blue note album. It's a good one for one starting a collection. By the way, the Rudy Van Gelder edition sounds simply spectacular! Remember, this was recorded back in '62. So go out and get this album! At [the price], you can't go wrong!

This is a great classic jazz cd. I guarentee you will have lots of fun with this one! Get ready to boogie! The whole lineup plays with plenty of intestinal fortitude and they blend together quite well. So what if it was really recorded in the studio? Perhaps what gives this album an edge is the band feeding off the energy of the audience. Energy is what this has. Mercy, Mercy, Mercy is a necessity in any jazz library. This *IS* jazz!
