I always find it fun to read on Amazon.com what others have to say about the books I like to read. Interesting and quite valid points usually get made somewhere in the process. ... If there was ever a professional victim, Scarpetta is it. And what teen-ager has never acted at one point like a brat? At least Arch has the potential of growing out of it. Some teens never do. And as I recall Ramses Emerson in Elizabeth Peters' Peabody series is a rather precocious fellow.
In comparion to other mysteries (Dr. Gidion Fell, for instance) Davidson's is rather lite reading. Read it for fun like I do. It is considerably better than Tamar Myers Pennsylvania Dutch series. Magdalena Yoder is totally off base to begin with. She makes Goldy look only slightly neurotic.
I enjoyed this novel. Like her other novels in this series you have to read this one every day until you finish it in order to keep the train of thought. As long as you do that you will do well with it. Davidson hasn't quite noticeably slipped yet.

Though her beloved spouse Tom is on a police matter in New Jersey, Aspen Meadow, Colorado resident Goldy Schultz feels a bit encouraged now that she has her first major catering job in a month. The Hyde Castle event means future jobs for Goldilocks Catering recovering from the debacle of the Lauderdale incident.
However, her upbeat feelings collapse when she learns her ex-husband has been released early from prison and someone shoots out her window. Not long afterward, Goldy finds the murdered corpse of Andy Balanchek in the creek near the Hyde Castle Chapel. When Tom who just returned home joins her there, an unknown assailant fires a shot and wounds him. Goldy has to balance her son's time with his biological father, nurse her current beloved husband, cater an Elizabethan feast at the castle, and uncover the identity of a killer. Any one of these ingredients could destroy her recipe.
The latest Goldy mystery is like all the others: fun and entertaining due to a fabulous heroine and a strong support cast. The story line moves quickly never allowing a terrible tasting treat to grace its pages. Goldy is one of the top female amateur sleuths because her chef Diane Mott Davidson always bakes a winner.

Diane Mott Davidson takes her formula cozy and adds some wickedly clever ingredients. Yes, they are lighthearted, far fetched - and absolutely delicious. Goldy Bear Schultz, caterer extraordinaire, starts her morning with a bang ... and then proceeds to have the worst couple of days anyone could fathom. The writer gets the Testy Teen just right (again) as well as the dinner and particularly the scones. This tale also provides a dollop of stamp collecting, a couple of cups of Elizabethan England, garnished with a lovely castle, a luscious labyrinth and some truly tangy individuals - not to mention a pinch or two of morality and romance. The pace is fast, but I did miss Marla who is very much in the background, as well as a trip to church with Goldy. Somehow Ms. Davidson manages to whip up an unexpected variety of ingredients and come out with a scrumptious culinary cozy.

If you aren't familiar with Diane Mott Davidson's wonderful culinary mystery series starring Goldy, the catering amateur sleuth, this is a great book to get you hooked! The novel boasts a wonderful locale (an English castle which has been transported and re-assembled in Aspen Meadow, CO), a clever mystery with lots of twists and turns, and numerous mouth-watering recipes created by Goldy and her assitant--budding vegetarian chef Julian Teller. I can't recommend this book highly enough to keep you entertained. You'll be torn between wanting to finish the book and running to your kitchen to re-create the terrific recipes. Davidson creates a wonderful story involving a colorful cast of characters. It's a terrific, fun read.

I just discovered this author last year so her last 9 or so novels are very fresh in my mind. This one is the best (the others were wonderful too). The beginning is so fast paced that I couldn't put the book down.
I discovered this author on a web site for mystery books called stopyourekillingme.com which organizes authors, titles and sleuths by job, historical time period, location, and other characteristics and then when you find a book you'd like to read, it links you directly to its Amazon.com page. Since I love Jerrilyn Farmer's Madeline Bean (she's a caterer, too) mysteries, that job category led me to Diane Mott Davidson. Who'd have thought food service professions could be so exciting.

If you can't stand the heat...leave the kitchen and go curl up with Goldy's latest escapade. I've read every one of Davidson's culinary mysteries and I can't get enough. Those reader's who just jump in in the middle or who start with this book may not fully understand the dynamic between the characters (hence another reviewer's mistaken assertion that Davidson is a man-hater). If you've followed along with Goldy Bear Shulz you know that she is a kind and giving woman who, if anything, is entirely tooo forgiving of that Jerk of an ex-husband. I not only recommend Sticks and Scones, I thoroughly recommend that you read ALL of Davidsons books. They're better than dessert!

You can always count on these books being a good story with great recipes to boot. I've been reading her series since the beginning and had the pleasure of meeting her at a signing. She is as nice as you would hope and her books never let you down. I particularly enjoy series that have evolving characters and this one always has. There are more intertwined threads in this tale that in most and it keeps you wondering exactly what is happening throughout but the resolution is good and there is enough peril to keep you on the edge throughout. Another winner in a great series.

I loved this one, as I have loved all the books in this series.
Harriet Klausner is my favorite reviewer, and if she likes a book, I know I will too. I'm glad I disregarded the surprisingly negative reviews about this book and went with her again. I totally enjoyed it.
The danger was higher this go around - with many twists of the story teasing my assumptions about 'who done it?' -
I'm looking forward to the next adventure with Goldy!

This author is one of my favorites. I found this book to be one of the best books yet by her. I like the stories although they sometimes get a little bit depressing. Sometimes it seems that everything happens all at once to this poor caterer Goldy: death and murder, grouchy son, business in trouble etc. However, it all seems to even out in the end. I also like the recipes. I would suggest all of her books.
