I've made three recipes in the last 2 weeks: the best tomato soup (it has 3 kinds of tomatoes, lentils and oatmeal) I've ever made, mulligatawny and sweet potato, lentil and spinach curry. I've also made the carrot sweet potato curried soup before (Julie posted it on her blog). Everything we tried at the book launch was also very good (who knew I liked parsnips? Especially when they're roasted and made into a soup!).

I cooked a big pot of black beans yesterday on the stove (no presoaking required) and a crock pot full of chickpeas, too. Divided them up and put them in the freezer.

The book is full of great tips and recipes using ingredients you probably have in your cupboard. These are healthy recipes that don't skimp on flavour! I don't think you can go wrong with this book!

I love cookbooks and I'm usually happy if I find two or three recipes in each one that my family loves. I was hoping this would be a good choice as my family loves beans. I've now made several recipes from this book and each one was a hit. My kids actually had an argument over who was going to get to eat the last of the roasted beet salad. The black bean brownies are absolutely yummy. I've also made two of the soups, the blackeyed pea and kale soup and the curried sweet potato soup, and both were delicious. The chickpea masala sandwiches were another big hit. I love that the ingredients are fresh and the steps are simple, yet each recipe has amazing flavor and texture. Best cookbook I've bought in a while!

I heard about this cookbook through a fave review in the Georgia Straight, our alternate newspaper. By the time my turn at a reserve copy came up at the Public Library, it was over a year since I'd read about it. The recipes were worth it, though! After trying a few, even my husband (who prefers blander, smoother, softer side dishes, accenting the meat, not the other way around) was sure we should buy it, too. Most recipes don't contain meat, and those that do, use it to accent the beans and grains--both are included in most recipes, and the ones I have tried so far are delicious and easy to prepare, although the preparation time estimates seem a little optimistic.

My only criticisms would be the book's unwieldy size and binding--it's hard to keep open for reference as you cook, so I may follow advice I've heard for knitting books--have it rebound with a spiral binding.

Pros : Some nice pictures. All the recipes tried were delicious. Great variety of meals from breakfast to snack or maincourse.

Cons : Mainly the recipes are with black beans or chickpeas and often the recipe are with canned beans already cooked. No tips about soaking or cooking them. It doesn't talk about alternatives even though if at the beginning of the book they talk about many beans. Some infos are missing in the recipe, like when to add the eggs written in the ingredients...

I bought this after seeing the authors on TV. It was well worth the wait. We have made at least 6-7 recipes and loved everyone, especially the Thai Chicken. I had to buy my two daughters this book as well just so I could keep mine at home. And yes it was well worth waiting for. We are all trying to pur more grains and beans into our diet and this book makes it really easy. My sister as well has ordered this book. Thanks for this great addition.

I have been looking for some time for ways to incorporate grains and legumes into weekly meals that are simple, easy to prepare, and delicious. I have found the book, and one of the best parts is that it is written by Canadian girls. I've made three or four things since acquiring this book, and they're all delicious, healthy, and easy to prepare.

I live alone and work full time. The soup recipes are easy to prepare and GREAT for my 12 hour shifts. I have been struggling to maintain a healthy diet at times because there is so much junk at work to grab quickly.

It's become one of my go-to books (and I'd say I own at least 100 cookbooks). Beautiful pictures. Mostly quick, simple, easy-to-follow recipes, Several of the recipes have become standard fare in our home:
- curried red lentil soup when I need something quick on a week night,
- black bean brownies (though I often sub red lentils) don't taste 'healthified" (well, probably because they retain all the fat and sugar you'd want in a good brownie!),
- pizza dough (yes, made with part beans, part flour)
- waffles (for "waffle Wednesdays" (btw: the Breville waffle maker is fantastic, if you're going to make enough waffles to justify the price - waffles lift right out, and all I have to do to clean, really, is blow away a few crumbs - I may just wipe it with a wet rag for my guilty conscience, but it's really only a matter of form) (I also often sub red lentils for these...as I do for most recipes calling for mashed beans)
- pancakes
- the flatbread used in the doubles recipe is a-mazing

As you can see, I'm quite smitten by the use, in this book, of beans as a partial substitute for flour in baking and such. I'm vegan, and this is a lovely new way to sneak beans into our diet. This is not a vegan, or even a vegetarian, book, so many (most?) recipes call for meat and/or dairy, and I've veganized with my own substitutions where necessary. I've also tried many other soups and stews, which have mostly been well received by my family of 6 (4 children under the age of 11). There are also other sections, such as salads and appetizers, which I haven't delved into due to family preferences.

I love this book so much, I've given it out to a few people as a gift, at least one of whom tried several recipes on her family of 6, saying they loved all the new food (except for one dud), even her most picky eater, and since it was so quick, easy and delicious (and she's not crazy about cooking the way I am), it was going to replace her Jamie Oliver book as her favourite (I've never tried Jamie's books, so I can't compare). I'm planning to give out more. :-)

I've had this cookbook for about 2 weeks now and have made 6 or 7 recipes from it. Each one was a home run with virtually none of the modifications I usually make to recipes to suit them to my taste.

Important note is this isn't a vegetarian cookbook. Not to say that the description of the book states that it is, but I guess I expected more vegetarian recipes. That being said, for most of the recipes that include meat one could simply omit it. For the others the dishes are more meat centric but thats OK too. For someone like myself who still loves meat but is trying to eat less of it, this is a perfect way to do so!

All in all a fantastic book and have bought 2 more copies for friends and family. Would recommend to anybody!

Every recipe I have tried in this cookbook is an absolute winner! It is amazing what you can secretly hide beans in without changing the taste or texture of the food. The breads, the brownies, the soups... the soups are incredible!! All of the recipes are mouth watering and only require every day ingredients you already have on hand. I haven't tried a recipe yet that my family hasn't raved about. The only reason I didn't give it a five-star rating was most of the recipes call for a half can of beans... what do you do with the other half? You either have to make a double batch, do the recipe twice or save the other half of the can. Also, no nutritional info is provided for any of the recipes which would have been appreciated.
