Baccano is definitely not your normal anime series. For one thing there's not a single Japanese soul in it. And for another, there is no one major character upon which others revolve. Instead you have over a dozen major characters all of whose actions are integral to the story, multiple plot lines which weave and intersect like a fine linen cloth and at least two major simultaneous stories which jump back and forth between the big Apple, Chicago and an express train called The Flying Pussyfoot! Then ups the anti even more by continuously jumping back and forth between 1929, 1930 and 1931 as well!
Set in the gangster era of America; at first it seems like your typical gangster tale. But this is soon dispelled when you realize that some of the major characters seem to be immortal and other storylines seem to appear right out of midair. Then throw in the jumping back and forth in time and you tend to go "What!........"
Now this is not the first anime series that has done this and normally I hate series like this but in this case it really works great! As you'll see a scene in an early episode, then jump to something that doesn't appear related and then later on see it again with different eyes or knowledge and things take on a different tone completely!
The characters are equally interesting. While a very violent series with multiple deaths, it's surprisingly not that dark. As whenever the angst tends to overwhelm, they'll throw in some of the weirdest character interactions, scenes or outright surprises. So you have characters like Isaac and Miria who are not the sharpest tools in the toolshed alongside deadly Mafia hitmen and others who may or may not even be human. Even the psychopath and the rail tracer are very interesting characters!
Finally, it is one of those very rare animes where even the most ardent sub fans advise watching it in English! Not because there's anything wrong with the sub, it's good. But because the English voice actors have perfectly nailed the 1930's era dialogue and voice inflections! And Funimation has made this even better by boosting the original Japanese stereo track up to a very nice immersive DD 5.1 track to boot.
Based on an award winning light novel, the main storyline essentially ends with episode 13 which has it's own ending credits and even it's own epilogue. With the remaining 3 episodes being more of an interlocking extended epilogue tidying up some of the more minor threads and showing some more of the various backstories. Like the main storyline, it's extremely well done.
So if you're tired of the usual anime staples, Giant Mech's, fan service, villainous death wish, etc., etc. And want a breath of very fresh and very unique air? Then I highly recommend this. Four stars out of five!

Going into Baccano! I have heard a many og great things about it and how much better the english version of the anime is to the already great version from Japan. I must say those people were correct. To make things better, the Viridian version of the anime is cheaper too for the complete season. The story is top notch, the plot is great and even though it jumps all over the place as far as what you see and when, it reveals things just at the right moments to keep you wanting to continue to watch for more and not get confused or bored with the show. Overall a great buy if you are looking for some 1930's action, mystery and all around fun.
Currently also got all my friends hooked and watch two episodes a week, and some of my friends don't usually enjoy anime so that also says something.

I am seriously glad I bought this anime, as I now rank it with my favorite series I've seen up until now. The story telling is quite original, as you have no central character to focus on : instead, you get half a dozen, all as loveable and unique as the others. What's more, you get to see, with the occurrence of multiple jumps through time, how all of their stories tangle to finally form a complex intrigue. The only thing I recommend is that you watch this series in a short amount of time (I didn't have any trouble, as each episode left me craving for more), as the recurring flashbacks and swaps between characters can get a bit confusing if you do not pay enough attention.

I bought this series not knowing anything about it except for how highly recommended it was.
It's really great to buy something without any expectations only to be blown away by the overall product once you've gone through all of it.
If you're a fan of any anime, you'll surely like this one. It has something for everyone.
It's slow to start but things really amp up once the train gets rolling :)

This series has it all, great unique story and characters. A must see for any anime fan and people who are just getting introduced to it. Warning, it is violent and gory, but AMAZING!
