I review items when I think I have something worth adding to what has already been stated by other reviewers. If an item needs a first review and I find the item unusually useful or aesthetically pleasing, I am willing to be a first reviewer. I give negative reviews only to counterbalance what I consider to be ill-considered praise from other reviewers.
I have no ambition to be a top reviewer. Sometimes a negative vote on one of my reviews could be as productive as a positive vote -- either way, the reader took a position regarding the review. I have begun starring (***) the reviews I write of items that I think may be genuine discoveries that I want to share. Look for the stars.

Even though it is more than ten years old now, Moret & Shapiro is still the best book available on NP completeness and related topics. In a way I disagree with other reveiwers who advise that only graduate students read this book. It all depends. I have known a number of graduate students who might not have understood this material as well as some undergraduate students. It is not so much a matter of college level as it is your personal tools for dealing with abstraction and complexity.

The Dante Club is a delightful read about a fictional series of murders that shake the Cambridge literary circle of Henry Wadsworth Longfellow shortly after the end of the Civil War. The characters were free -- historical personages set into the fictional piece conceived by Matthew Pearl. I thought Pearl handled them well and made them seem quite human. The centerpiece of the story is Dante's Divine Comedy. If you have already read Dante, by all means, read this book and enjoy. If you have not yet read Dante, put this book down and read Dante immediately. Do not wait until you have learned Italian -- there are several excellent English translations available in inexpensive editions.

John Eldredge gives us his clearest presentation yet of the concept that life in Christ has always been intended to be a love adventure. His examples from the lives of friends and fellow believers give concreteness to this book. I would like to see a more thorough scriptural explication. Eldredge's ideas are closely related to John Piper's theme of living a life of joy in the amazing goodness of God. Eldredge takes the same concept to a more personal, day-to-day application level. Get this book and read it. You will be glad you did.
