A Treatise on the Theory of Bessel Functions by G. N. Watson
5.0 out of 5 stars Bessel Functions, June 13 2004
In my area of work, Bessel functions play a major role. I have often found texts on applied mathematics much too comprehensible simply because the authors tend to show their vast knowledge about the 'abstractions' and little emphasis on computational details. In my experience authors of applied math. textbooks tend to exhibit some form of muted contempt for the reader who is uninitiated with abstractions.
The main utility of Watson's treatise is in its old-fashioned,
no-nonsense approach. It does not cheat the reader interested
in working out details. Proofs of various theorems & identities can easily be grasped if one knows the relevant aspects of complex analysis. The… Read more
Microstrip Antenna Design Handbook by Garg
First of all Amazon has the author list wrong. I have tbe book and the order is: R. Garg, P. Bhartia, I.J. Bahl and A. Ittipiboon. All the authors, particularly the first two, are are well-known in the area of microstrip antennas. This is book is the expanded version of the 1980 classic 'Microstrip Antennas'
by I. J. Bhal and P. Bhartia.
In this edition, the authors have done a remarkable job of exposing essentially all aspects of microstrip antennas, including the transmission line model, cavity model, generalized
transmission line model, microstrip Green's functions, spectral and space domain approaches and the like. The treatment of these
topics is fairly good, and… Read more
The Clash of Civilizations and the Remaking of Wor&hellip by Samuel P. Huntington
It has become fashionable, and that too alarmingly in academia, to adopt a 'politically correct' position on controversial and
"sensational" issues. In the post Cold War era, it has become a
ritual (thanks to ACLU and their organizational siblings) to
castigate anyone who would be opposed to Islam. The trait I do
notice is that leftist/liberal intellectuals try to masquerade
howlers as serious academic efforts. An unrelated case would be
the fiasco with Prof. Cornel West (African American) at Harvard.
When Larry Summers (Harvard President) questioned Dr. West of his
academic output over the past 5 (or 10 ?) years, there was a huge
media outcry… Read more
