A Little Princess (Widescreen/Full Screen) DVD ~ Liesel Matthews

While this version of A Little Princess is not necessarily bad, the producers took so many liberties with Frances Hodgson Burnett's novel that people who've read the book may be unable to watch it. The boarding school is in London, not New York, for example, and the addition of songs and fuzzily filmed dancing detracts. If you want the accurate and entertaining version, go for the WonderWorks A Little Princess with Amelia Shankley, Maureen Lipman, Miriam Margolys, and Nigel Havers. I hope you need not be warned away from the Shirley Temple version.
One Against the Wind [Import] VHS ~ Judy Davis
I have owned two copies of "One Against the Wind"--because I wore out the first one! You can get the story from other reviews. I show this movie to college freshman in a writing class where we talk about being your highest and best self and making moral choices (among other things). It's entertaining, riveting, and a great springboard for discussion. I don't want to have to buy another VHS--Hallmark, please, transfer this movie to DVD as you have with "The Love Letter" and "What the Deaf Man Heard."
Take Back Your Kids by William Doherty
Take Back Your Kids by William Doherty
I wish someone had handed me this book before my first child was born. Dr. Doherty states what many child-rearing "experts" should say, but don't: it's good for kids to have limits, it's okay for parents to expect respect and other contributions to the family from children, and parents have to set the example in showing respect and love for each other and the kids, respect for the family, and an example of what they want their children to become. I can't wait for Dr. Doherty's forthcoming book, "Take Back Your Marriage." "The Intentional Family" is also wonderful and emphasizes the role of family traditions.
