In My Own Words:
I'm a simple creature, composed of mostly water, carbon, and a few trace minerals. Some people say I exaggerate my carbon content, which I cannot deny from a literalistic point-of-view, but I think the carbon is really instrumental in my uniqueness and outlook. Well, that and some of the trace minerals, which are REALLY wild.

Java Black Book with CDROM by Steven Holzner
Java Black Book with CDROM by Steven Holzner
2.0 out of 5 stars Disappointingly Shallow, July 12 2004
This isn't really a tutorial; it's a reference. In fact, it seems like most computer books I pick up these days are references. That's understandable: a tutorial is much harder to write than a reference. (It's probably harder to sell, too, since a tutorial has to be pretty squarely aimed, so I don't necessarily blame the author.) Of the 1,000+ pages this book, I'd say half just list all the attributes of Java objects, and a good portion of the remaining page consist of code listings showing help-file-level examples of how to use them. It'll definitely boost your ego and… Read more

What to Do About Your Brain Injured Child by Glenn Doman

All right, my satirical review of this book and the Institutes for the Achievement of Human Potential was not widely appreciated, so I offer this straightforward look at things.

Our family has been doing this program for two years, and we've been able to see its effects on three children: A 12-year-old diagnosed Severely Mentally Retarded with Angelman's syndrome, Cerebral Palsy, Epilepsy, etc., a mildly brain-injured six-year-old who has symptoms fitting several forms of dyslexia, and a six-month-old, who actually started the program several months earlier, since it's so easy to do with babies. (Actually, we've seen it work on many children, including those with Down's, but I'll reserve… Read more

Civilization 3: Conquests Expansion Pack by Atari (ATBB9)
This is a GREAT expansion pack. Particularly if you skipped "Play The World" (as I did). There's more, more, MORE of everything, and enough interesting gameplay tweaks that it makes Civ 3 feel like a brand new game.

What makes it so good?

* New tribes to play. Or, perhaps more importantly, new tribes to play against. The Mayans can be a terror.

* New tribe attributes. Seafaring! Agricultural! OK, that doesn't sound that exciting, but it definitely has an impact on gameplay and strategy. Agricultural favors the AI such that the new Killer AI tribes are almost always those with the Ag trait, like the Celts.

* Boosted navy! Combined with the Seafaring, navy is still… Read more
