Additional Features

Even though it's only a single disc, the 28 Days Later DVD includes a lot of very interesting features, including the alternate ending that was shown after the end of the film a couple months into its theatrical run. It's much bleaker, as director Danny Boyle and writer Alex Garland say in their optional commentary. Another alternate ending is almost the same as the theatrical ending but slightly less happy. Most interesting is the "radical" alternate ending that takes an entirely different path midway through the film. It wasn't filmed, however, so Boyle and Garland narrate the action over storyboards, and it's a surprisingly engrossing 11 minutes. Boyle and Garland also did a commentary track for the film, and they talk about how they were able to get the shots of deserted London and why they used the ending they did. There are also six very watchable deleted scenes, and Boyle and Garland's comments range from "great sequence" to "a disgrace." Slightly less relevant is a 24-minute documentary that spends its first 10 minutes on the real-life threat of infectious diseases before recapping the film and discussing such elements as the use of digital video and the boot camp the actors had to attend. If you need any further proof that the DVD was a labor of love, even the stills galleries have commentaries. --David Horiuchi

This movie is good for the first 30 minutes. Then it turns into the same old boring quest for a contrived ending that destroys so many good ideas. It's cool the first time around, but has no replay value. If you've seen it once, you've seen it a million times. You don't learn anything new the second time around. It's pretty low brow and has no metaphorical value. Any intellectual attempt made by the writers is destroyed by the "trip to the country gone wrong" crap-contrived ending that brings absolutely no insight into anything. Apocalyptic movies must have some deeper value than simple smash-n-kill crap-action. The biggest crime this movie is guilty of is OVER-HYPE. This movie has no place in a horror classics list, despite what the back cover would have you believe. Rent, don't buy this one.

This one was quite influential in the "zombie" horror movie\game genre. Not zombies per say but so close to it, the "infected" were actually fast and agile instead of slow and lumbering. It makes a world of difference in how menacing and scary they are. 28 days later sports a very good suspenseful story that makes you want to see what's next. It has some quite intense moments and some brilliant memorable shots: the deserted streets of London in particular. The acting was quite good from a cast of relative unknowns (at the time). Special mentions must go to the evocative music and how the rain was filmed. It looked amazing and contributed strongly to the atmosphere. Overall, it's one of the best serious horror movies of the start of the 21st century. The only arguable weakness would be the original ending.

28 days later is a well made film.it has good performances from its
main actors,it is suspenseful,and there are some scary moments.the
director maintains tension throughout the movie.the make up effects in
the film are very well done,so that the infected look much less than
human,quite horrifying in fact.the action sequences are well done as
are the dramatic moments.this a not a zombie movie per Se,but a movie
about human relations and interaction in the face of what seems like
hopelessness.the most horrifying thing in the movie is its
premise,which is: plague has spread throughout the land,infecting
people and turning them into animalistic creatures,not quite
zombies,but not human either and having no thought other than attacking
and infecting the uninfected.it shows the desperation that some people
are willing to go through to survive.i won't give away any specifics of
the plot.anyway,for me,this is a well crafted movie all around.it is a
deep movie with a message and it asks some very scary questions.highly
recommended 4/5
