A priceless biotechnology, an FBI agent, and an unspeakable act of familial betrayal collide in a tropical kidnapping more twisted than a DNA double helix. When a renowned scientist with a solution for global warming is kidnapped at sea, FBI Special Agent Tara Shores must unravel a high-tech trail of S.O.S. messages encoded into the DNA of living cells. As each decoded message brings Tara nearer to the missing genius, it also takes her farther from help than she ever thought possible.

"A whale of a tale by first-time author Rick Chesler involving modern-day pirates, media moguls, and a sexy federal agent -- all chasing a cetacean-mounted camcorder and the crucial piece of evidence needed to resolve a murder."

"WIRED KINGDOM is a fast-paced thriller that is one third deep-sea adventure, one third FBI sleuthing and one third awesome. A superb debut novel and killer concept."

Although I found this book a bit slow going at first the story did pick up and I found it very interesting. The science behind the premise is fascinating. The characters are well developed and it was well written. in the end I would say this was a very good read.

HASH(0xa94c12e8) out of 5 stars Hazardous in Hawaii March 9 2011
By M. R. Campbell - Published on
Format: Kindle Edition
Three months after wealthy biotechnology company CEO William Archer is lost at sea or kidnapped off his research yacht in the warm waters of the Hawaiian Islands in Rick Chesler's inventive thriller "kiDNApped," Special Agent Tara Shores faces a very cold case.

She also faces the uncertainties of three civilians intruding into an investigation. Was Dave Turner really looking for a wedding ring on the ocean floor when his dive boat was stolen and his employer was murdered? What can Archer's son and daughter from the mainland possibly contribute just two days before the court declares their father legally dead?

Shores, a veteran agent who first appeared in "Wired Kingdom" (2010), is about to stamp the case file "INDETERMINATE" because there are no leads and no ransom demands. While Archer's son Lance wants to drink beer and chase girls until he can collect his inheritance, his sister Kristen wants Dave to return to the ocean floor on the off chance his interrupted search is related to her father's disappearance.

When their dive attracts unwanted attention, Shores and her disparate crew are suddenly in the line of fire. Kristen wonders if her genius father encrypted a call for help in the DNA of ocean bacteria. Shores wonders how she can possibly babysit civilians who are more likely to get in the way and/or get killed than anything else.

Rick Chesler has written a breathtaking tropical adventure that combines a cutting-edge technology search for clues with a madcap, island-to-island race against bad guys that would put a smile on the face of any James Bond aficionado.

Agent Shores definitely needs a new rubber stamp for her case file: HAZARDOUS TO MY HEALTH.

HASH(0xa8a9d75c) out of 5 stars Even better than WIRED KINGDOM! Oct. 18 2011
By Reader 7 - Published on
Format: Paperback Verified Purchase
Rick Chesler's KiDNApped is an intelligent suspense thriller that easily competes with anything by Cussler or Crichton. Dr. William Archer, inventor of a breakthrough piece of biotechnology, has been kidnapped, and it's up to FBI Special Agent Tara Shores to find him. In this book, Tara is joined by Archer's son and daughter as she searches for Dr. Archer on an action-filled chase across the beautiful Hawaiian Islands. The catch is, the only clues are encoded in microscopic strands of DNA! As far fetched as this sounds, Chesler manages to make it believable. His writing is gripping and once again, he does a great job of putting the reader right into the midst of the action. It's a hard book to put down. I loved Chesler's first book, Wired Kingdom, but KiDNApped is even better. I hope he's hard at work on his third! I highly recommend this book. -R David MacNeil

"If you can write DNA, you're no longer limited to 'what is' but to what you could make." ~Drew Endy

Set in the beautifully scenic back drop of the Isles of Hawaii, a kidnapping has taken place so long ago that the man will soon be declared die and lost at sea. His daughter a brilliant successful professor of microbiology is not ready to give up on finding her father just get. Along side of her is her Lance a not so successful computer programmer, who is being enticed with a free trip, room and board. This brother and sister team are joined by Dave, a scuba drive and marine biologist and a FBI agent named Tara. With clues left for them by the missing Dr. William Archer, they are hoping to close in on the captures and rescue their captive.

This book starts off like water that is calm just before a storm that is brewing blow in. It give the reader background information to get to know the characters that they will be following. Then with each ripple in the water, the plot become more in depth, even includes technical aspects that are truly remarkable if true. The reader finds hidden secrets and betrayals within this team of searchers, that cause the FBI agent especially, to keep a close eye on the rest of the party. Reading further along, it as though the winds are start blow and the wave start crashing against the surf and there is a need to hang on to something for dear live or be blown away. Then it is found that the waves are coming from one source and that source will lead to more answers and hopefully to one happy ending, or will it.

HASH(0xa8ebac0c) out of 5 stars Rick Chesler steps up his game March 16 2011
By Toby G. Tate - Published on
Format: Kindle Edition
First of all, Rick Chesler's "kiDNApped" has nothing to do with the Robert Louis Stevenson book of the same name, though I can't rule out any influence here since Rick's books tend to involve the ocean in some way. After all, he is a marine biologist.

But Rick's books involve science, as well. Where WIRED KINGDOM was a tale of a whale-cam (influenced by Herman Melville, perhaps?) that accidentally records a murder at sea, this one involves a kidnapping at sea which is also recorded, but in a rather ingenious way--with living DNA.

kiDNApped starts with a bang when a diver's employer is murdered and the body sent down to the depths--right next to the diver. Then the boat is stolen, taking his air supply with it. Not a good situation, but he manages to save himself with some old-fashioned ingenuity.

FBI Agent Tara Shores from WIRED KINGDOM marks her return as she tries to solve the riddle of what happened to a scientist who creates something almost as incredible as the cure for leukemia. Some not very nice people would like to get their hands on that creation and they'll do anything--including murder, and lots of it--to gain singular control.

But the scientist left clues to his fate in a place no one but his own scientist daughter would think to look. You guessed it--inside a DNA sequence.

After her high-profile case in the first book, Agent Shores is transferred from Los Angeles to Hawaii, where she meets the family of the missing scientist. Like any good mystery, there are a lot of plot-twists that will leave you wondering who's on which side. Suffice it to say that everyone in the family is not what they seem to be.

The thing about Rick's writing is that he has the knack of putting you in the story. As a marine biologist, and I would imagine also an experienced diver, you're right down there in those claustrophobic ocean depths. The descriptions of Hawaii are strikingly detailed and really made me want to go there for a visit.

WIRED KINGDOM was a great techno-thriller and with kiDNApped I think Rick stepped his game up a notch. Fans of Michael Crichton would probably enjoy this book. He has a new publisher this time out (Chalet Publishers) and some really great cover art by Stan Tremblay. I look forward to seeing more from Rick Chesler.

HASH(0xa8c4f348) out of 5 stars Intelligent Micobiology Based Thriller: kiDNApped Takes Hawaii by Storm!! June 11 2013
By C.A.Beck - Published on

I commend Rick Chesler on his expertise in Marine Microbiology, and presenting a unique kiDNApping tale without compromising the intelligence of the plot in favor of "easier reading". I appreciate the science in this story and the integrity of the main characters in the positions they find themselves entrenched in. This is a Tara Shores Thriller, and FBI agent Shores does not over-power the story with feats of being some kind of wonder woman. Shores is "regular FBI" with great intuition and the knowledge to balance her resources with those of the children of a missing scientist, and an "accidental" yet fortunate recent Marine Biology graduate who finds himself procuring work with the team to locate the "presumed almost dead" father. But time is of the essence, and there is a race against the clock to locate Dad before he is declared legally dead. The kidnappers have one agenda, the scientist Dad another, and the siblings are his key to rescue, with the means to do so enabled by the daughter's personal resources and the aid of the FBI. I really enjoyed this captivating mystery/thriller. I loved the uncompromising science, the romp through the Hawaiian Islands, and the balance of very capable characters to hold their own both "the good" and "the bad" with some surprising twists as to whom really belongs on which side, right up until the last page of the book. This would make a great summer read! Go get it and enjoy!!! 5 stars!!!!!
