Great read
If you like historical fiction, you'll like this book. But by the same token, if you don't, don't worry--there's plenty there to hold your attention. And don't be turned off by the "19th century" novel description--this book is very accesible and more "21st" than "19th." I would also recommend another fantastic read that I've just come...

Nope....... didn't like it.
Having just (finally) set aside this novel, what leaps to mind is that there is a very fine line between being eloquent and being verbose. This author crosses the line far too often. Having just (finally) set aside this novel, what leaps to mind is that there is a very fine line between being eloquent and being verbose. This author crosses the line far too often. The book is roughly twice as long as it needed to be... that's 400 pages too long by my account. It soon became evident that the primary characters were all motivated by either the love of, or hatred for, sex. This was the driving force which propelled their generally miserable lives. There was nothing lyrical or engaging about the sex; it was ever-present and almost always lugubrious. Obviously I wouldn't recommend the book. There are those who purport to have enjoyed it. Good for them but I cannot think why. All the men or women are corrupt in some fashion. It became preposterous and tiresome. Predicatable ending too.

Crimson Petal & the White, Jui 22 2003
This book was good, though I have to agree with the two main criticisms: a) There was a little too much gritty reality (farting, pooping, the consistency of spunk, etc.), and b) I felt as though the ending totally left me hanging. The story and the writing style had me hooked, though. I enjoyed this work as a modern take on the Victorian tale. I read it in only five days, which is not an easy task for an 800+ page book. I would recommend this book to those that I feel would appreciate historical fiction, but not to everybody I know. (As I would other books that I loved.)

A Deliciously Scandalous Tale!, Juil 14 2007
Not for the faint of heart, this book brilliantly describes slumming it in 18th century London through the words and stylings of a 21st century writer. Readers are instantly drawn into Sugar's world, and cheer her on as she climbs the social ladder of London society. It's "Vanity Fair" meets "Letters to Penthouse", a seductive tale that became an instant favourite as soon as I found myself under its spell. Although I do agree that the ending is a bit flat, the 900+ page journey that takes you there is absolutely breathless.

One for the book clubs, Nov. 30 2004
I wish I had a book club, or at least knew someone else who had read this. I need to talk about it. The first seven-eighths are an intriguing what-happens-next story that you can read a few chapters of every night. The last bit I had to read all at once and couldn't put down. I was also completely blown away by the fact that this was written by a man-- it feels like something a woman would write. Very well done.

Wonderful Read!, Fév 22 2004
I picked this book up not because of the rave reviews or the numerous awards and honours bestowed upon it, but because it was over 800 pages and I enjoy a thick read. The book's pace is fast and while at times I found it a bit wordy, the author's style and use of words drew me in. I could not put it down. I wanted to know what happened to Sugar, William, Sophie and a whole host of other characters. Is the ending a diappointment? Maybe to some, but I think it is fitting to William to never what happened to Sugar or Sophie and we, as readers, are left to draw our own conclusions. I like to think Sugar and Sophie lived happily ever after. Read this book. You will not be sorry.

Relaxing Read, Jui 20 2003
I think this book is beach reading with some interesting historical notes. I think this will be a sleeper in the literary world, though. I appreciated the incredible research and detail in the story. I found the introduction a little awkward, but somewhat effective... my one major complaint is that I was left wondering about the demise of one of the significant characters whom I won't name here and ruin the plot. But I enjoyed the book and, sequel or no, I think it stands on its own. It is not a pat little tail, but an intriguing and intricate story of the rise and fall of one particular man. Try it... you'll like it. But don't expect an earth-shattering read, just a pleasant one.

this novels never lets go til the end, Jui 16 2003
Before the first page was read, the fascinating narrator plucked me right out of my world and back into the savage and dirty Victorian London. I disagree with the bad reviews given by other readers, some of whom compare this to a typical romance novel! Characters of such depth and complexity you will not find in the typical romance. Borrow or buy this book, and enjoy your trip as you travel hand in hand with the story. This book is no cheap trick; it is worth every penny.

Like Dickens With Sex, Jui 12 2003
I really enjoyed this book. Yes it's filled with graphic and sometimes foul discriptions of sex acts and bodliy functions, but the book's about a prostitute in the 19th century! People expecting to go through the nearly 850 page book and not be faced with the stark ugly realities of Sugar's world should probably break open their Harlequin romances. I thought it a testament to the author that at it's length it continued to remain compelling throughout, with no real clues as to where the characters were headed. I also appreciated his tongue in cheek approach to the material that had me laughing out loud at the follies these characters underwent. Is it pretty? Absolutely not. Is it well written and enjoyable? Quite.

So the Author Doesn't Spoon Feed Answers....., Nov. 21 2002
Well, good for him! Although this is an easy read (it's a compelling story and I read it in one sitting - a long sitting, but still) the author does his audience the credit of believing them to have intellectual curiosity. So, no, he doesn't give you chapter and verse on the motivations of his characters, he leaves you clues and assumes that you can interpret them as you choose. Hey, you've been warned - the author opens this book saying, "Watch you step. Keep you wits about you; you will need them."I thought the characters were fascinating. Why does Sugar help Agnes? Perhaps because she sees their similarities and views Agnes as being just as trapped by her position in life as Sugar is. Hmmm... doesn't sound like a one dimensional character at all. 833 of the best pages I've read in years. Savor them!
