A multi-layered fantasy,
By Karleen Bradford (Owen Sound, Ontario Canada) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Dust (Mass Market Paperback)
I am a lover of fantasy and this book ranks as one of the best with me. It has all the necessary elements--the reluctant but driven hero, the quest which only he can accomplish, the satisfying conclusion. Along the way Arthur Slade keeps the reader spellbound and wondering. I read the book in one day, unable to put it down. After I finished, I found that I couldn't stop thinking about it. The images are still fresh in my mind. I've reread it now and have discovered even more layers to it.This is a book that you can't wait to finish, but at the same time don't want to finish. The only solution is to start reading it all over again.

This book won the Governor General's Literary Award back in 2001 for Children's Literature. I loved it. Set in a small town in rural Saskatchewan of Horshoe something strange is going on. Robert's younger brother has gone missing and soon no one seems to even remember him. The story set in a depression era dust bowl farm community, has many unique twists and turns. The strange things started happening when Abram Harisch arrived in town; he appears to be taking control of the townspeople through his magic, mirrors and bewitching nature. Harisch has promised the town a rain-making machine, and in following this dream they are slowing losing all they care about and don't even notice. But Robert does and he knows he needs to avoid Harisch and figure out what is really going on or the whole town could be lost. There are two different cover jackets for this book. I prefer the original to the newer one but either way it is a great adventure read.

Dust won the Governor General award for children's literature in 2001, and rightly so. This novel is refreshingly different, with strong character development, and unexpected plot development. I couldn't put it down.

I really liked this book! Thought it was a cool blend of sci-fi/fantasy and a big heaping of Stephen King horror. If you like being scared READ IT.

Eerie and thought provoking,

In Dust, Art Slade has created a walk into another dimension. It is no wonder that the book has received such sterling reviews, as well as the Governor General's Award and the Mr. Christie's Book Award. The beautiful, expressive description takes us into the dustbowl thirties in Saskatchewan and the agony of a boy who has lost his brother. Slade's mesmerizing stranger, a villain preying on children and numbing the minds of the adults, is chilling and all too real. Trading lives for financial prosperity is the evil Slade has portrayed so well.

This one will hook you from the first chapter.,

When Robert's 7-year old brother disappears from a 1930s Saskatchewan prairie town it is only the first of many strange things that happen. He starts to have strange dreams, his parents seem to forget his brother, the local reverend starts making animal noises and an ivory-skinned man has arrived in town promising to make a rain machine. The first chapter describes the disappearance of the little boy and is utterly chilling. I was hooked at that point and couldn't stop reading. It's a short book and I don't want to give anything away by saying too much so I'll just say Slade has written a book which is a cross between Stephen King and W.O. Mitchell. I was at turns reminded of Who Has Seen the Wind and Needful Things. I will definately be reading others by this author.

A great book for all ages.,

Another exceptional book by an exceptional author! Dust transports you back in time to a simple world that gets torn apart by a mysterious stranger who steals the souls of children. Like others, I had to read this in one sitting. The pace is gripping and the characters remain believable even as events get more and more out of hand. I won't spoil the ending, but can say it won't go the way you think.

I hated it with a passion,

This book is in no means what I thought it was going to be. I am into all the mysteries and stuff and this book turned out to be fantasy, and I am not a fantasy lover at all. But even I know that fantasy can be well written and in this case it was not. The books plot had no flow to it and it seemed as if Arthur Slade had to meet a dead line by the way the ending was written. I just was not happy after completeing this book and I would not recommend it to anyone even fantasy lovers!
