This history of the thirties should be read by today's youngsters, to get some idea of the hardships of those very lean pre-war years and also to gain some understanding of the role of socialism in producing a better society. Not least because there is the danger of slipping back to non-caring government, for whom profit is all. The book gives an overview of life at all levels of society and shows the baleful influence of Class on the Britain of those years. The rise of fascism, the Spanish Civil War are dealt with fairly. A very good read!!
