This review is from: Diary Of A Worm (Hardcover)
My seven-year-old son is able to read beyond his grade level but reluctant to do so unless the book is about Pokemon (and then he can lose himself for hours). However, he read this one - the text is below his grade level but the humour is age appropriate -he read it three times in one sitting and laughed over and over again. Don't buy it if you are expecting to challenge your child's reading skills. But if you are looking for something clever and new that he or she can simply enjoy without any moral lesson, this is it. Even my mother enjoyed it - as she said, it is so refreshing to see a completely new approach to a children's book.

Diary of a Worm Review,
This review is from: Diary of a Worm (Paperback)
This book is hilarious. My Grade 2 students love it. It is a great example of how to write a diary. Some people say that Diary of a Wombat is the funiest, but in my opinion, I think this one is the best. It makes grown adults laugh out loud!

My daughter and I borrowed this book from the library yesterday and I have to say it's the first book in a long, long time that has sent the both of us into giggling fits. It reminded me of Gary Larson's The Far Side, but for kids. Also some of the humour is pretty subtle for a new 4 year old, but knee-slappingly funny when you get it. The illustrations are a perfect fit for the story in terms of style and content. Don't forget to check out the inside covers of the book - the snapshots and captions are just as hysterical as the rest of the book.We both highly recommend this book!

My grandson is a beginning reader. He loved Diary of a Worm. He read it with some difficulty at first and then reread it about 5 times, with much laughter each time. After the 2nd time he could read it easily. This is the kind of book which makes a child want to read.

I have a new favorite. This worm's diary is laugh out loud funny from cover to end page. Bliss' illustrations add more humor on top of Cronin's entertaining story. For example, the dentist in the story is wearing a nametag that says Dr. D. Kay and our hero gets a note in his lunch to "eat all your trash". There's even a little ecology lesson about the benefits of worms. Who knew worms could be so appealing. Highly recommended.

I purchased this book for my school's library due to the reputation of the author and the fact that it is on the Texas 2x2 Reading List (see txla.org for the entire list). I have enjoyed all of her books and this is no exception. The day it came in, I shared it with a couple of teachers and it's reputation spread like wildfire. I had a record number of visitors that day who wanted to laugh and enjoy the new gem in the library!

I think I enjoyed this book more than my 6 year old son. Not to say that he didn't like it... which he did, but I was particularly impressed with the quirky humor in the book. First children's book I read more than once just for the laughs. And, we've been through a LOT of children's books.

"Diary of a Worm" is a prime example of how the right combination of illustrator and author can make an amazing book!As part of the Junior Girl Scout "Books Badge," I asked my 12-year-old Girl Scouts to read a review of "Diary of a Worm," then read the book and see if they agreed with the reviewer's opinion. Well, those 12-year-olds were soon cracking up at the idea of a worm diary, but they laughed even more at the directions in which the illustrator took the diary entries. When the little boy worm writes, "July 4... When I grow up, I want to be a Secret Service agent..." my girls roared at the picture of two little worm agents in sunglasses and earpieces, wearing black suit jackets (no pants, of course). They laughed even harder as one girl pointed out, "Look! He drew the jacket with sleeves, but they've got no arms to put in them!" How funny are these little details? Take a close look at: a dentist whose name tag reads "Dr. D. Kay"; macaroni necklaces consisting of one piece of macaroni that completely encircles the worm's neck; and the books that the worm is dragging home from school, with the titles "DIGGING - A History" or "Compost 101." The funniest bits, however, are the illustrations on the book's endpapers! They are meant to look like the little worm's scrapbook, and have family photos with his captions written underneath. A picture of him with a baseball says "I found this really cool rock!" Another drawing is a corner of a $20 bill with the caption "Isn't this leaf awesome?" My five year old son adores this book. AND so do I, AND so do all of my 12 year old Girl Scouts! No mean feat (or feet, either!) (sorry, couldn't resist a "feet" joke) We all HIGHLY recommend this book. :-)

There are three books my children can't live without this year: Diary of a Worm, Drum, Chavi, Drum! and Slithery Jake. They are all written by authors who seem to have a brilliant sense of humor. These three books are a must if you want to bring humor into your children's lives.
